2002 Full Time DRLs - Instructions for UnderHood Mod

If you haven't checked (and I suspect you have) - make sure all the relays are in their proper spot.  The fog light relay is different (part #).  Also, these relays aren't keyed so make sure they are plugged in facing the right direct/pin orientation.  Check against diagram on fuse box cover.

Other than that, I'm at a loss.

Weirdest thing...  They just started working again. ???

Just not on FTDRL.  :needhug:

Will try again tomorrow.

Lurch helped me this this morning in the parking lot and it was working good now I am just waiting for the sun to go down to check it out!
Thanks Lurch!!! (y)

I was searching Google and came across this forum a few days ago.  Yesterday at work (yes, I have to work Saturdays) I came across this particular post and the guide for  this mod made it seem so easy that I ran out and bought the diodes, heatshrink, and new lights last night as soon as I left work.  I spent a little while this afternoon tinkering and now I have this mod and my amber DRL's installed.  I love this forum.  Thank you so much.

Got it done yesterday afternoon - couldn't wait for dark to go driving around... (y)

Suh-weet!!!

Now I'm gonna tackle the HID stuff.  Got a 2006 WBH.  Looking at the  DDM stuff.  I need a step by step approach.  I also don't want to go too blue.  Any help?

I had bad luck with DDM, but I (eventually) got the 8K 35W HID's that I ordered.  Was a piece of cake to install, the hardest part was finding a location to mount the ballast.  Also had to reverse the polarity of the "double plug" that attaches to the ballast to get it to work, but according to DDM, that's common.

I did this mod today. It worked perfect the first time. Very good write up. The only thing that I noticed is that all of my relays are the same # 8567. Also put in the amber DRL's.

I installed this today and it took me about 15 minutes, When I started it up, (I was in park) I didn't see my driving lights on, but now during the day (while the car is in drive) they are on as usual, but when I turn on the headlights, all except the brights are on. This is very cool when flashing someone to go ahead of me. Very easy and better yet, cheap. The PDF explains everything, thanks!

I ordered the 35W 6000K Raptor kit because the 8000K seemed too blue. I know what you are thinking..."With those underbody lights why would you want anything else?" but here in UT they tend to pull over the blue headlight people more often. the polarity is backwards so you will need to turn the plug around. Additionally the stick tape on the back of the ballasts does not last long so I would zip tie or find some other way to mount the ballast. As far as the bulb they are exact drop in there is an extra wire that you can remove. Other than those couple of things, it is a really easy install.

I've had All-on-High and FTDRL for five years now.  (y)  Anybody know why I have to replace at least one of the amber FTDRLs frequently?  I mean it's like they might last 12-18 months and one dies.    I've had Sylvania 3157NAs, 3157NA LLs, and some very bright Wagner 4157NAKs that were the same kind that came in the turn signal stock.  BTW, the turn signals haven't died yet.   ???  Lastly, the reflector mirrors in my DRLs are way fogged over - I had them replaced while still under warranty but they're cloudy again.  (n)

Smiley's are goofy.

I cant' seem to find a 2002 ALL4ONHIGH thread along with FT Fog lights, so I thought I'd post here:

I took a 12" piece of wire from the passenger side low beam YELLOW wire, and grounded it to the bolt that holds down the stock airbox.  I don't have the stock box anymore, so it was easily accessible for this mod.

Total time from start to finish: 15 minutes.  And 10 minutes of that was looking for a piece of wire buried in the cabin shed.

Happy Labor Day!!

I ran across this mod and it just so happens to be, i have an '02 Avalanche. My question is, the DRL's will come on as soon as the key is in the ON position, right? And shut off when ignition is turned off? Will the DRL's being on full time, cause any discoloration/melting of the lenses? I get confused sometimes. The DRL's right now, only come on when the tranny is in gear, right? We're not talking about the fog lamps, right? Its the lights that i replaced the bulbs with Ambers, right?  Sorry bout all the questions but i just want to be sure. Is there any purpose to this mod or just to make our Av's stand out in a crowd? Thanx, Jim

Yes with this mod, your DRL's will be on whenever the ignition switch is in the ON position. The mod itself should not cause discolorization or melting of the housing as long as you have the correct bulbs. Without the mod, the DRL do indeed only come on when the truck is in gear. Yes the purpose of the mod is to made your truck stand out with the ambers on ALL of the time.

I think the DRLs are notorious for having a short life in the Av. I constantly see trucks with one or both burned out. I've changed mine out once or twice, and still haven't had to change my blinkers.

A co-worker with an '03 has a short, one DRL burns out quick so he quit replacing it.

I left NALL in the '02 when I traded for an '04 late June 2004 and put NALL DRLs in the same day. I did do the FTDRL on the '04, only time I ever replaced a light in 9+ years of Avalanche ownership was to add the ambers. Over 6 years now mine still work fine.

It's common in many Chevy/GMC trucks/suvs for one DRL to burn out, too common to just be a bad bulb. There has to be a fault in the wiring harness or in the assembly process installing it, my guess is in assembly a wire gets pinched but not broken.

May I suggest DIELECTRIC grease.

I haven't had any trouble with the amber DRLs on my A/V (just gave them the kiss of death) but we had a 99 Buick Regal that went through the amber DRLs/turn signals every few months.  Finally realized it was not the filament burning out, the connector on the bulb was burning away (lousy connection causing excessive heat?).  Problem solved by buying new bulbs, some DIELECTRIC grease, applying the grease to the bulbs bases before inserting them.  Never had this problem again.

I'm aware of that, when I removed orginal clear DRLs from both my '02 & '04 the base of the bulbs were blackened from heat but not burnt out. I did not add any dielectric grease as it was already slathered in both so thick I didn't need any. Good suggestion, by all means add dielectric grease if the socket is dry.

I gave away old original clear DRLs to someone with one out. My ambers are 6+ years old and full time mod, never had one burn out. I have a spare pack of NALL in the truck, odds are I'll give them away and buy two more spare packs before I have a light burn out.

At MI GTGs odds are someone has a spare pack of NALL and someone has some diodes for FTDRL mod  :B:

Every two months I have to remove the ambers, turn them around apply more dielectric grease, and reinstall.  The sockets are slightly melted and keep losing contact.

Hi Flint!!!

just joined a few days ago and saw your thread so I decided to make this my first mod. That is why i replied to it.

No problem. Easily made error.

NEW UNRELATED QUESTION --  but does anyone know the purpose of the material stuck on inside of windshield with the black dots on it, that is just behind the rear view mirror? Don't laugh, but I've held a Glass Contractors license for the past 45 years. But never did Auto glass, so I'm at a loss.  :help:

The black dots are for sun shade since the visors don't extend that far. The top 1/4 of the windshields were tinted darker until '03 or '04 so didn't have the dots. We used to have clear windshields mainly for export to Canada. It's cheaper to make them all the same, they cut other content like the underhood light, one of the lights in the bed and the dual sunvisors about the same time.
