2002 Full Time DRLs - Instructions for UnderHood Mod

I really, really dig this mod. One of the easiest ones out there. You did the 4 brake mod using the trailer harness. How hard was that to do?

That one was pretty easy also, but took a little longer because of running wires to the trailer harness. I made sure to solder and heat shrink all my connections, and double check everything. It was probably about two hours to do both taillights. I highly recommend it though. Once I figured out what I was doing it went really fast, and if I hadn't been doing it outside in windy weather, I think it would have gone even faster.

for anybody who hasn't figured this out yet, I stumbled upon this write up from one of the members that helped me a ton. $4 and 5 minutes later I now have FTDRL and all on high!

Thanks to whoever wrote this up!

P.s. I'm sorry If I broke any rules/etiquette Just bought my Av two weeks ago, still getting a hang of this whole forum thing!

WOW. never mind, just realized that that was a just a PDF version of this exact thread. Sorry guys! i feel like a idiot!

Hey guys idk if anybody else has asked this but I just went to radio shack today and got 4 12w diodes and the ones from the pictures look a lot bigger and longer. The ones I got came in a 2 pack and were only about 2-3 inches long. Are these the right kind?

In Virginia, you may only have 4 total white forward facing lights.  Anything more is illegal.  Choose your inspection station wisely.  Just sayin'.

Hence converting the DRL's to Amber.  Then you can legally have lows and highs, or lows and fogs, or highs and fogs....

Good advice from Troublemaker for those who live in States with vehicle inspections. The great thing about this mod it is so easy to temporarily undo before you go for inspection and after, to redo.

I'm not sure what the headlight regulations are here in Pa. But I have never had a problem with All-On-High at inspection time, including those done at the stealership.

I had a problem with mine in NJ...  they failed me because the fogs came on with the high's...  Had to install a switch between the point where the 3 diodes meet and the 85? pin where they all go.  Ran the switch to the side of the underhood fuse box (hidden when lid is on), and before I go to the inspection station, I hit the switch to disable the All-4-On-High, then hit it again after passing inspection to re-enable.

I have inspection next month (April), so I will take some pics and post them.

You can go on Radio Shack's web site and order them.

So I just did this mod two days ago, and everything usually works as it should, but from time to time I cannot turn my high beams off after turning them on.

When I flip the lever back to turn the highs back off, the dash indicator light will turn off, but the brights will stay on until I completely shut my lights off and turn them back on.  Again, this doesn't happen all the time, but it is pretty annoying when it does happen.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? Anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks,
Heiser

Heiser, if it were me, 1st thing I would do is undo the mod completely.  Drive for a few days and see if the problem is gone or is still there.

If it still happens, I would think the hi-beam relay is sticking and should be changed out.

If the problem is gone, re-do the mod but use fresh diodes.  It is possible one is flaky.

Also check the wires from the diodes are not running under another relay, possibly causing juice to flow to that relay.

Hope this helps.

When I did my mods (more than 6 months ago), I had a helluva time due to the diodes being too short. When I posted this to the group, no one mentioned that theirs were 4-5 inches long. So I just added about 2 inches of solid wire to each of mine by soldering, and they worked fine. Now I'm finding out (thanks to you) that someone makes longer ones than the ones I bought at the Shack. Wish I knew then, what I know now. Duh!

Chalk another up for full time DRL's with Ambers!
I also upgraded the fog lights to 885's. 27w vs 50w WAY brighter!

On a side note, I didn't read the part about removing the two blue wires by using a toothpick to release the clip. I grapped them with some needlenose and pulled. Oops. Good thing I had some jewelers tools to re-work the factory clip.
Also reconditioned the headlights with the 3M headlight restoration kit. It worked AWESOME on the lights, but not good at all on the fogs/drl's. The plastic must be different or have a different coating. They are now a little-bit blurred, but better than they were.
Thanks for the help and this topic/forum!

Hello eveyone, Longtime no posts ...been a while. Been cleaning up my 03 this week. Just today did the All-on-Hi MOD with some help via Radio Shack. Very easy to do thanks to the Great instuctions on this post. I also went amber on the DRL's. "Do you see me now?"

i have a question, is it possible to have the fogs operate normally and independently but stay on when the hi beams are on, at the same time, if they are off i do not want them coming on with the hi beams
thx

No, this is not possible with this method. Sorry!

Yeah, you can do that by creating a latching relay circuit.  It would involve multiple relays and diodes to create the logic.  It would have to be a small external box.  The circuit would keep the fog relay energized only when it was already on and when the hi-beams are on.

thx but im still in the dark (no pun intended) lol
if you know how to do this, any chance of emailing or posting a diagram ?

thx
