2002 Steering Box Replacement

Swapped my steering box and I've still got a good bit of splines still showing on the pitman arm link. I've cranked the nut as far as it will go with considerable leverage. I removed the nut and viewing from the bottom the splines look 100% nested. I didn't grab a before photo but there was probably the same amount of room, although the bushing was hanging down to cover the gap. Is this acceptable or should I try to snug it further with an air tool?

 
That's as far as it goes, and yes it's normal. The plastic sleeve that slides down over the splines that will cover them. It looks like is pushed up against the box in the picture, slide it down and it will cover the gap..
