2003 Avalanche

GUEST
Dealer called today to try and sell me a 2002 Avalance, said was going to wait tell 2003. He claims they will be out in July. The owners of the dealership has seen the 2003 and said they are worth the wait. No price increase anticipated, but you can't believe a salesman.

Waiting for July for my 2003

Your dealer is feeding you a line of bs as far as when the 03's will be available. The plant that builds the Av doesn't do it's model changeover until the first week of August this year. The interior changes are nice, but don't expect to see the trucks until late August or into September.

Anyone have any ideas or info on what the differences will be the '03 models? I'm getting ready to go shopping next week after a *lot* of research, but would consider waiting if it's really worthwhile. Alternatively, I might get an '02 and think of trading up if I don't end up being too upside-down on the value. (just a thought...)

LazKat:

Heavy, heavy indications and strong rumors that the Avalanche will get an upgraded interior. The biggest changes are some tweaks to the instrument cluster, steering wheel mounted audio, cruise, and climate control (on Avalanches with climate control) and an updated A/C climate control system (the interface not the guts). There is also strong rumors that the cladding will be a darker gray than current production models. Quadrasteer is not going to be on the Av according to VC Lutz of GM. Also, because the styling of the front clip is going to appear on Silverados starting in 2003 (slightly tweaked) I don't think you'll see an external reskin for a while.

Owners are screaming for the option of a 6.0 Liter, better stereo and a backup assist system. Of the three - I think the best chance of seeing in the Av is the backup assist.

Also, it seems rather typical for Detroit to do some tweaks under the hood that might give 5 more HP or 5 more pound feet of torque or maybe an extra MPG. But that is pure speculation (and between model to model only a marketing play).

To be honest, all the little extra's there are being speculated on...I think is great......Nothing though that would make me trade in the Av....I think I could do without...for now. ;)

I saw a picture of the 2003 at my Dealership. All that I noticed being different was the tail light above the back window. It was much longer than the one on ours now. I hear a lot of people complaining about the stereo in the Av's. I am shocked. I am a true Audiophile and I am quite pleased. Then again, I have never sat in the back and listened to the radio from there. ???

Really? Of all the cars/SUV's I've had, this stereo was one of the worst. Replacing the head unit didn't make enough of a difference, as I think the speakers are pure crap. The high range is bland, the mid is muddy, and the low end is boomy (55-gallon-drum-ish).

Just my .02

The only thing I know for sure about the '03 is that XM satellite radio will be available (according to XMRADIO.COM and GM), which would also require at least a head unit upgrade. Here's hoping for a better overall sound system!

Lutz just stated today that the cladding on the 2003 Avalanche is HISTORY. GM will save about $750/vehicle with the "new look." I wonder if the "sticker" will DROP by an alike amount?

Jerry - link? Source?

Just thinking out loud... When do you all think Ford and dodge will come out with one...?????

just thinking again.

Well I thought that the Avalanche was GM's answer to the Sport Track. Unless Dodge is keeping a big secret, I don't think they have anything in the works.

Autoweek TV was doing a segment on there long term Silverodo truck story (they liked it very much) they showed a quick look of a 2003 and it looked very much like an Avalanche front end

I was driving home the other night, and brake lights started coming on ahead of me. About 3 cars up was an Av turning right into a gas station. As I got closer to it, I noticed that the 3rd brake light extended almost the entire width of the truck. It was huge! I didn't have time to stop and ask if it was an '03, but as I went by, I also noticed a tubular-style roof rack.

Coulda been, might notta been. Don't know.

Full width third eye brake light? Check out the picture in the "Spoiler for my AV" thread in the Accessories forum. There's a nice picture of the light on ebay. Did it look like that? IfF so, you either saw a new Escalade or a modified AV.

If it has the tubular roof rack, then it was a Caddy EXT. The Detroit papers says that 03 Av will not have the gray cladding. Whether that means the cladding will be a diff color or eliminated is unknown. A GM training guy I talked to says the part of the cladding over the step boards will remain..... gotta wait and see.

Forgot to include the quote out of the Detoit News 4-7-02 edition:

Lutz shines in auto spotlight
Wary of guru status, GM strives to keep revival leader on-task

By Joe Miller / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Hoping to generate some more positive buzz on Wall Street, General Motors Corp. last month gave analysts a sneak peek at its future model lineup -- including an updated version of the fast-selling Chevrolet Avalanche.
Unlike the current model, the revamped sport-utility truck was conspicuous for its lack of gray plastic cladding -- a pet peeve of GM's new silver-haired product boss.
"It's been 'Lutzed,'" one industry consultant later noted.

If you look inside the Accessories Pamphlet (Not the PDF File )for the Avalanche you will see the extended light in the back. I was told by the dealer upon questioning it that the one in the Pamphlet was a 2003. So yes I would tend to think that you saw a 2003. See Attached Picture!!!

The truck in the accessories pamphlet sure does look like an EXT to me. I justed visited the caddy dealer recently. But that is another topic altogether.

I saw two(2) 2003 EXT's - his and hers - white and black - the light accross the back is huge [say ricer] - only got a minute to look - not terribly impressed, only has the 6.0L. ;D
