2004 Puddle Stompin Build

PuddleStompin said:
Been a little while since i posted an update.  Last thing i have to buy is the leaf springs for the swap.  Almost have everything purchased for the 14Bolt SF Swap.

I am going to build some custom spacers so i can still use the current brakes off the stock 10bolt.  More pics to follow.  Clunking up front led me to buying the Borgeson Steering Shaft( PN# 000937), should have that on in the next two days and some reviews over the next month on it.

Cant wait to see

Finally have all the parts i need.  Just need to put a little TLC into the springs and this swap can finally go under the truck.

Your going to leaf springs in the rear?

Sure am.  Was considering a 4 link in the rear but the way the gas tank was positioned was going to be a little to tight for my liking.  After being on pirate 4x4 and doing a little more reading i felt this was a tried and true way to get good rear travel out of the rear suspension without spending a ton of money.

Ok that makes sence how hard would a solid front axle swap then be with leafs?

@Dakotawilk - Havent ever done one but there are plenty of kits out there for GM 1500's  that bolt to the front of the frame.  I would think it would be the same amount of work or a little more.  I think the bigger question would be can you maintain the 4x4 push button with swapping in a Dana44 or Dana60.

Since i am not planning on doing a massive lift or running bigger than 37" tires i might go with a Dana44 with all the internals upgraded.  I have looked for Dana 60's here in CA and find that they run close to $1000 (used).  I currently do not have a solution or have looked into how the 4x4 will work.

It should not matter because that's all in the transfer case and it runs a drivline to he front so whether it goes to the current IFS set up now or a axle I think would make not difference so long as you have a driveshaft that fits and I haven't heard of any otpf those kits I have seen everyone dabbing up there own is all

Will probably be a year out before i tackle that project.  It has taken me almost 6 months to research and gather all the parts i needed to do this Semi Float swap.  More pictures to come in the next month or two.  I will write up a complete parts list and put pricing down so if someone wants to do what i did they can have a price tag for doing so.

Dakota you are right, the transfer case is the transfer case, as long as you have a driveline going to it and the angles arent that bad, itll work. Now for someone like me, I am going to be doing a 14 bolt read end swap like you PuddleStompin but will go with an 8x6.5" bolt pattern and also do coil springs. Same with the front, Dana 60 front end, coil spring set up with separate shocks. Will also have to cut into the bottom of my truck and have a transfer case put in and replace my stock center console with  a bench seat and a place for the 4 on the floor. I have also made it a goal for myself to have that taken care of within the next two years. Wont be super high or anything right away, but just make it 4x4 and have the SAS done. I have a shop about an hour from here that can do it and will take my truck for about two weeks while they do it.

How much is that gona run you if you don't mind me asking?

Not totally sure yet, but it is probably gonna run me around 5-6k. Will have to save up for a while and work my butt off to earn the money but its possible if I really work hard at it.

I will double check this list but this has all the links for the parts with pricing.  Hope this helps anyone looking to do a similar swap

That looks awesome! And it fits behind all of the lines? That are on the axle?

Thank you and not sure.  Since the whole axle is apart, it will be interesting to see how everything comes together once under the truck.  I will let you know how the stock 10 bolt brackets and lines hook up with the modded 14 bolt.

I would think that they arent that bad as far as swapping over everything. But As far as the diff cover youre going to be looking at just improved strength and maybe even a little bit more fluid capacity in the diff as well which will just help out as fr as cooling

A little more tech info for those that are considering doing the 9.5" swap.  If you can't see it here is the link to the web page.

For those of you considering a SAS... this might be a good place to start looking.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/60_front/index.html

Pulled this out of one of the threads off of Pirate4x4.  I am trying to get familiar with the differences in the GM/Ford/Dodge Dana 60 and 44.  Hope this helps.

Differences between the Chevy/Dodge D60 and Ford D60 are more numerous and apparent. They include

1) Chevy/Dodge use a 6 bolt spindle mount pattern, Ford is 5 bolt

2) The Chevy/Dodge spindle and bearing/wheel hub are 5/8" longer than the Ford.

3) The Chevy/Dodge stub shaft is 0.600" longer than the Ford stub shaft

4) Chevy rotors are about 1.5" thick, the Ford and Dodge rotors are about 1.25" thick

5) Virtually all Ford front disc brakes used 2 piston calipers

6) The Chevy/Dodge outer knuckle is clearanced for their large single-piston calipers, the Ford are not.

7) The Chevy/Dodge caliper mounting bracket bolts on AFTER the spindle, as in knuckle-->spindle-->caliper bracket, whereas the Ford mounts the caliper bracket between the knuckle and spindle, as in knuckle-->caliper bracket-->spindle

 The Chevy/Dodge are passenger drop regular cut low pinion diffs, the Ford are drivers drop reverse cut high pinion.

9) Chevy/Dodge uses six 1/2" spindle studs, Ford uses five 7/16" spindle studs

10) Ford knuckles seem to have more issues with the upper kingpin area strength than others. Chevy/Dodge knuckle has thicker ribbing around the upper kingpin area.

11) Ford knuckles have a shorter steering arm than the Chevy/Dodge. A 1.5" diameter tie-rod on a stock Ford D60 will justtouch the diff cover at full lock. The same tie-rod on a GM Dana 60 would be just over 1/2" away from the cover at full lock.

I am going to go with the chevy dana 60s  (y) maybe out of like an 85 or something along with the transfer case and the 14 bolt out of like a mid 90s 2500/3500 trucks

Just picked up one of these today.  Trying to decide if i am going with the super steer or the DMax kit for my idler support.

Here is the link if anyone else wants to pick one up:
