2007 - 2013 FULL TIME DRL & FULL TIME FOG LAMP MODS (with pics)

So I looked at radioshack and they have two 6 amp diodes, one that is a 1000v diode and the other is a 400v silicon diode and those are the maximum blocking voltages
which one?

Good question, but tough to answer without knowing more info.

But you can probably tell just by size and the price which is better...
The 400v silicone (Ford Pinto) diode will work but the 1000v (Chevy Truck) will work better.

Either will work in this application, as it is a very crude application (basically an on / off switch)

Basically Silicone diodes have higher voltage drops compared to others.

I could expand on the virtues and drawbacks of each, but I can barely remember what I did last night, let alone my college days!!!

If you really wanna get mind humped with info on diodes read a little of the link below.

Relays also work great too. They are able to handle high amperage loads, and with it being fused you would never have any issues.

That being said diodes are a LOT cheaper and easier to wire up for the general do it yourselfer type.
(try explaining how to wire a 30/40 amp Bosch relay to someone, describing the different input / output /trigger / and ground terminals!!!)

For the FTDRL and FTFogs Mod you would need 2 relays on 07+
BUT for 03-06 you would need to buy 6 relays (plus associated fuses and taps)  and find a home for them somewhere.

Average cost of 6 amp (proper rated) diode= $2.50
Average cost of relay, fuses, and taps= $15ish +

Don't get me wrong it IS a good way to do it, just not (
Code:
like the girls I used to date
) Cheap & Easy!!

not true, my 08 nonly has one relay, thats fulltime fogs and full time drl, all on high.

off topic warning here

krazycarguy, your puddle lights, are they on the bottom of the mirror? if so what and howd u do it? I upgraded my mirrors to the tow mirrors myself and know how to remove them and all that so I would be able to mod them if I know how to do the puddle light, I just dont

not sure i understand your question. I havent modded my puddle lights, yet. lol. The puddle lights are controlled by the door modules. If you want the pduule lgiths to come on with the dome lights, you have to run a wire to the mirroe through the door. Ill pull wiring diagrams for you if youd like.

Then I must not understand what puddle lights are. I thought they were lights put into the bottom of mirrors that threw light onto the ground. If they arent this then what are they

Hey guys quick question.. A local hardware store has only 10 amp diodes not 6 is the 10 overkill? Figured its cheaper than buying the 6 amp online. :dunno:

Yes it's overkill, but should only come at the cost of a physically larger component.

My stock ones didn't even have them. And I have the LT2 package.....

thats weird. you could probably stencil the patern onto your mirrors, use a dremel to cut the hole, then just run the wires the the correct connector.

would GM parts direct have the light connector and all that stuff? and then just get a different bulb

youd have to look. If you wanna do it right, your gonna need terminated leads and repin the correct connector. I doubt partsdirect will have terminated leads. Unless you want them wired in with your dome lights, then all you need is the connecter and housing, and run the wires thru the door to the left I/P junction block.

Id probably wire them to the dome lights, but I dont really want to go chopping up my new mirrors

you could probably run to your local autozone and pick up some white LED strips that have double sided tape on them.

I used a 1000v 10A Diode and the temps are not that bad, the diode is only 77F after running an hour with the outdoor temps at 65f.

....Also want to add the engine was running as well.

Whered you find that? I checked at radio shack and the largest they had was a 3 amp and that one has gone bad on me and quit working so I took it out. I dont think that home depot or lowes would have it, but does anyone know for sure?

Two options... you could either use 2 - 3 amp diodes tied together, or check out ebay.

The first post has links to ebay, just click on the picture of the diodes.
