A few days ago I got a recall notice from GM about the Takata Airbag but it said they didn't have the parts so they can't recall my 2008 Avalanche right away. Because my parents have a 2010 Suburban but didn't receive such a letter, how many other people here have gotten a recall notice and if anyone knows whether GM has parts to replace the airbag system that would greatly help. Note, I've tried looking for threads about this and I haven't found anything so if there is one, I apologize.

You can always check your VIN at any GM dealer and there are some recall checkers online that you can enter your VIN into to see. GM doesn't have records of every vehicle sold and who currently owns them. When a vehicle first comes to a dealership for service I understand most dealerships check for recalls automatically. Might be done automatically when they enter your VIN into their system.

The VIN for our 2007 Avalanche started showing up in the NHTSA list a couple of months ago.  We got the recall notice a few weeks ago.  Just like T-rex-king, ours says that GM doesn't have the parts, doesn't know when they'll get them and it's still safe to drive the vehicle. Not very high on my confidence list that it will ever get fixed.

I received multiple notices on my '01 325i.  I first received a notice that my car was subject to recall and that I would be notified when the parts were available.  I then received a notice a few months later that the parts were available at my local BMW dealer and that I should schedule an appointment.  Many months after I failed to act on it, I received a follow up notice to schedule my appointment.  I'm finally getting it replaced today.  Foolishly, it took me missing Bambi by mere inches with my daughter in the front seat on Monday morning to decide I NEED to quit putting it off.

Long story short, the parts will be available within a couple months of you receiving the initial notice.  The older the vehicle and the hotter your climate increases the importance of getting it done.

Well now this begs another question...would the dealership have take my horribly patched dashboard out to replace what ever they need to replace when ever they get to it and if so, would I be responsible for that part and I would just get a free airbag replacement or is there a possibility that as they do the process, cracks return or get worse, and make them replace it for free or little cost? I'm just as concerned of the dashboard turning into shrapnel in an accident than I am of the airbag.

I got mine. It didn't say which or if all the airbags were effected.
That's a good question and a good point, I'm def. going to bring that up if the front passenger bag is one that will be replaced

Got my notice on my 2011. It basically said to sit tight and I would be notified later aboitba swap out date.

Received a notice that my 2011 has a 'Takata' airbag that is on the recall list. It also states not to worry and I will be contacted when my dealer has the replacement parts. Should I be worried?  ???

What's the worse that could happen?  ???

I doubt they will pay you to just park it and since you have received the Official Recall Notice, this may begin to limit their liability.

It is a Dilemma.  ???

I got one of those notices too. I haven't called my dealer but thinking I will add the fix to my list when I bring it in for next inspection and maintenance work.
Like having insurance or not having insurance it probably doesn't matter until you need it. From what I have read about airbag issues there are very few incidences of spontaneous airbag deployment it is more of a problem that when they deploy the do it with massive force and possibly metal shrapnel. The first reports said it was more likely to happen in more humid and salty areas like the southern coastal areas and vehicle had corrosion.
So I guess GMs stance is probably not enough replacements to go around so let's do the corrosion areas first? And that the airbags will probably be OK to drive around with and they are playing the odds you won't get in an accident with airbag deployment.
I look at it as I grew up without airbags and me and my family survived just fine without them, my Harley and my 1947 Chevy don't have them now either and I haven't quit using them. I just don't want my airbag to go off with shrapnel to harm me or my family but we also are low mileage family now so odds aren't great we will get in a wreck. So all in all I don't worry too much about this recall.

GM is fighting the recall .... they have yet to have one of the airbags become an issue, that was the last I heard ... and I got my notice about 6 months ago ....

Exactly what I've heard. GM stated that their airbags are uniquely different on the GMT-900 platform to not be related to the other airbags being recalled. If it does truly get recalled, don't be surprised if it takes years before parts show up. That does make me curious... Say the recall becomes official. Wouldn't GM be replacing the airbags inside the dash? You know... that dash that's cracked for many people. What then? Would GM be forced to replace the whole dash for these people? I can't imagine them legally being able to replace the airbag into a broken assembly. The last thing I'd want is someone messing with my dash after all these years... so many things to remove and work with, to break, to scratch.. arg!!! I'm really hoping the recall doesn't go through.

Notified of this when purchased vehicle in 2015. 2008 avy ltz 72000 mi loaded. Excellent shape. Was told I'd be told when parts were available, they'd call to do work needed. Now its 1-9-18 - no word. I think they are hoping the truck dies.  (n)

Looks like GM lost this one.

Airbag recall happening.

Wow! Was not expecting that to ever happen. Going back to my 2016 question, I wonder how GM will handle owners with cracked dashes.

so is this just the steering wheel airbag or the passenger airbag too? I am curious of the process after the first Avalanche goes through.

My dash is not cracked (yet), so I’ll be taking all kinds of photos as well. Should be interesting how GM handles this one.

NHTSA gave GM 30 days to provide the agency with a plan on how the automaker will notify owners and fix this recall.

So I wonder if my VIN is not listed yet as GM is still identifying which vehicles specifically.

Yeah, I would think it will roll out in phases over the next X amount of time. If you have the Chevy app, and your vehicle is logged on/in the app, you’ll get notified.
