I have decided that it is time to say goodbye to my 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 LTZ 4x4 (60k miles). As much as I love the truck resell / trade prices are way up and it is time for a change.

So far the dealers have offered me less than what KBB says it is worth. I am planning on ordering so that may be the cause.

What bothers me somewhat though is that they don't know how special the Avalanche is. None of them knew about the book that came with the 2013's for example. I still have everything that came with it, even the white gloves for the jack handle. The rear seat DVD hardware was never even used and is still in its bubble wrap.

If I trade the sales tax is calculated after that so it could save me a couple thousand.

So should I trade it or wait till my order comes in and try to private sale it then? If I do trade it should I keep the book?

Go to another dealer and see.
Heck might get better price on new and trade in.
See what those use car places will give you for it.

Bust out calculator to see what all the options end up costing you in long run.

Well there are many issues to your questions that only you can answer.....There are also many things beyond anyone's control. Used prices are up due to lack of being able to get new cars made in part due to a shortage of computer chips for all the electronics needed on new cars and trucks.
So I would start out and ask first, why are you saying it's time to get rid of your AV? Is it falling apart or are you just bored with something old and want all the fancy new features?
Could your new vehicle be delayed with so much production being halted now? Also if the new vehicle breaks down even if under warranty will it be repaired quickly due to a shortage of parts? (I have a neighbor who has had a new car in the shop for several weeks waiting on parts that the dealer can't get....)
Selling your AV is always a supply and demand thing and as a collectable it would probably sell higher to a private buyer if they appreciate and want the AV. Extras like the book may sway a buyer on the fence about buying if they care about originality and collector items otherwise you may want to keep it for your memories.

Time for a change and the high resale / trade is why I am getting a new one. Also at 60k, 8/9 years old certain things start to go. I just replaced the O2 sensors.

so far dealers have offered between 21000 and 23200. KBB says it should be 24 to 27 for trade

I agree with your thinking about now being a good time to sell a good condition used vehicle since prices have never been higher and the bubble may burst soon if new vehicles ever ramp up production again. The negative side of this market is that many dealers will not give anything off on the price of a new vehicle and it will definitely cost more then the fixes you think may be needed in the AV. You will also have higher taxes and insurance on the new vehicle.

Yeah.. trade value is likely to be reduced unless you're going for another used vehicle or the dealer is super generous. New cars and especially trucks are a premium right now

60k is low mileage all things considered. I just got done selling my charger with 60k for jsut under msrp. You're dealing with an age thing on it, which can be less of a factor to someone that wants an avalanche. Around here, i've seen 16-18k for a 2013 with 130k on the odometer. And i can guarantee you that people in my town do not put the care into their vehicles.

The thing is that you have to expect a dealer to want to make 3k+ on the purchase. Which gets you down to that price point for your mileage. You can certainly try going private. Car gurus and autotrader are some of the more legit ways to sell for a small fee, but FB marketplace is the most popular. Just expect the typical flakeyness.

If you want to go dealer like I did for the ease, find a dealer that clearly diversifies their used lot. My dealer has a showroom with everything from bmw's to corvettes, to an old 83 bronco in prestine condition. They paid top dollar for my charger and still managed to sell it. Dealers like this are the types that see the value in vehicles outside of their primary branding. They like the oddities and it often helps them get foot traffic onto the lot. They are also aggressively buying vehicles amid the pandemic to make up for their new car sales.

That dealer cared about the new tires and brakes that were on it. They cared about the limited edition trim, and they cared that i had an extended OEM warranty on it. To them, these were all selling points. These dealers do exist. But you have to find them. Id never expect a dealer to know about anything though. Salesmen come and go, and most that you eal with may have never sold an avalanche. If they dont think something will matter to a new owner, then they wont show interest in it.

Most of the dodge dealers I went to gave me a low offer because they focused on nitpicky cosmetic crap and couldn't care less about the maintenance because prospecting owners are frankly ignorant. If a car looks good, they will buy. thats all that matters.

There are also collector car dealers in every state, though im not sure the avalanche will warrant any higher value to most right now. id bet on publicly listing it on the aforementioned sites. People are absolutely open to looking nationwide for a clean avvy. The shortage is jsut going to continue tightening the grip, and northern states are going into what i consider 'primo' truck season. aka winter.

I had it detailed before I went to the dealers so that helped with the looks side of things.

I wound up ordering a new Dodge for FWP pricing and $24k trade in for my Avalanche. When you consider that the trade in reduces the taxable amount of the sale I think I did about as good as I could. Of course if the bottom drops out of the used car market before my new truck comes in then the trade value could shift.

I wish I would have seen this truck. I bought the identical truck in white with the same miles miles from a dealership about 8 months ago and paid just over 30000 for it. Mine had a little extra Chrome and dual exhaust but otherwise was the same truck. You probably could've got at least another 2 from the dealer. Don't know if you tried to put it on auto trader, cars.com, carfax or the like but I know I shopped for 6 months on the Internet talking to dealers from New York to Florida to Texas to try and find one with these kind of miles. There aren't that many left out there. I would have bought your black one in a Heartbeat as that was the color I was looking for but settled for the pearl white because of the miles.

I still have the truck. It won’t get traded in until the new truck I ordered arrives. That is when I have to decide whether to trade it or sell it private sale.

So that's why the original owner of my Avalanche had white gloves in the jack storage bag! I hope I did not throw them out, I remember thinking why would anyone use WHITE gloves (cloth none the less) to work on their truck!!! Learn something new everyday ;-)
