Notice 2024 EV Silverado has a mid-gate; is it the Next Avalanche?

I was just reading about this. Looks like we have ourselves a new "Avalanche" after all, whatever they want to call it is fine with me. The split midgate was in the original patent (which has probably expired by now since more than 20 years have passed). It's a great idea. Looking forward to seeing more of this new truck.

The Silverado EV RST also shares a unique feature called a midgate with the once-popular Chevrolet Avalanche, a pickup GM produced for more than a decade beginning in 2001. The vehicle's rear seats can fold down and the rear glass above them can be taken out and stored in the seats. The feature significantly increases the size of the vehicle's bed from 5 feet and 11 inches to nearly 11 feet.

"We had a lot of satisfied customers with Avalanche," said Ryan Vaughan, Chevrolet design director for the Silverado EV. "Having said that, this is not the new Avalanche."

Put a reservation in this morning. Definitely not going for the "First Edition RST" with it's $105k MSRP, but will hopefully be in a pretty good position to get a lesser equipped model. Would love to get the TrailBoss version they teased in the release video. I also have a Rivian R1T pre-order. The Silverado was supposed to be a backup order in case the Rivian didn't come to be as promised (I ordered the 400 mile battery, but they have yet to produce any or officially rate it, and who knows what the price could be by the time mine is supposed to be produced in the second half of 2023). If the Silverado can perform as advertised, it will seriously make me consider cancelling my Rivian order. I will be following the details closely as they become available.

They really should have called this an Avalanche though, it's pretty obvious that is what it is.

Will we see an Avalanche Return in the near future with the Electric Silverado returning with the Avy's classic mid gate functionality. Just food for thought would love to see a T1 Avalanche with the 3.0L Duramax.

Lack of the Avalanche name I'm sure is due to name recognition. More people are familiar with or have owned Silverados.

Seeing the midgate work, it is exactly like the Avalanche but with the 60/40 split that many of us were hoping for. Call it what you want GM, we really know what it is, AvalanchE with the E in blue would look great on the side.

This is fantastic. Just last weekend I was thinking that I'd pull the trigger on an Av if it comes out again, but all electric makes it hard to justify. How much time does it take to fill up? Not road trip friendly.

... Not road trip friendly.

With a 400 mile range and a 10K towing capacity, just buy two.

Charge them both up and set them up to tow one.

When the first one is almost out of juice, swap and have a gas generator in the bed of the one you are towing.

Charge the towed one while you move on down the road.

Keep swapping until you get where you are going then charge them both up for the return trip.

:) (y)

And it's got a frunk.

Nice except for the cost and the EV part, and the cost and the EV part. Hybrid, maybe but full EV, hell no.

I would prefer a new Avalanche based on the Suburban for one main reason, I like the no-wheel-wells in the bed a whole lot, really adds to space and capability also the higher sides and the side storage.

It really looks how a 3 Gen Avalanche would look; it doesn't have a separate bed like all trucks have had since the beginning of time I wonder if they're just calling a Silverado just because the Avalanche sales figures dropped over time, and they don't want to associate the two models..

I'm glad Chevrolet gave the design a second chance again, I think I could give the work truck a chance but they can keep the 24 inch wheels and other stuff. The electric motor still has has to proven reliable to me, so don't wait for a used one to pop-up those batteries are going to cost a chunk of money to replace.

I'm sorta on the fence. I dont need a truck, but I'm looking at getting an EV for daily driving. I put a reservation down just to have the option.

Thankfully, GM put a 350kw charger onboard, so it's really not as awful on road trips as some think. You do, however, need to do a bit more planning. Electrify America has these chargers at pretty decent points anywhere I'd need to go in my state. You can download the app and skip registration if you want to take a look.

I didn't see the battery size, but the Kia EV6 has a 78kwh battery and can charge to 80% in 18 minuites with a 350kw charger. (Keep in mind, 80% is what is recommended for most vehicles and charging slows down quickly after it is met. it's usually faster to do multiple 80% trips than trying to top up to full.)

Their only downside is that you can expect to pay nearly gas rpices to charge at these speeds. Where electricity is 8-12 cents per kWh at home, they charge 45 cents.

Charge point has other options all over the place, though speeds and prices vary.

That's interesting, because if you blindly wrote down the features of a Silverado and an Avalanche, this thing would be more Avalanche than Silverado.

Naw. It's an EValanche.

Too me EV's are useless for towing, unless it's short trips close to home. If I tow my boat to a lake it has to be less than 300 or less miles with no hills or it's not going to get there. And last time I looked after I parked my truck in the parking lot there was no place to plug it in. So, when I get off the lake at the end of the day how I'm I going to get home??

Absolutely love it but...

GM is debuting the RST First Edition with an MSRP of $105,000.

not at that price

This is a little more reasonsable

The WT and regular RST will be far more affordable at $39,900 when they arrive in summer 2024 but, depending on options, prospective buyers might still expect to pay "MSRPs around $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and more, allowing them to choose the truck that meets their capability and pricing needs," according to GM.
But I suspect any that come with a mid-gate will be in the upper echelon vs. the entry level. I would love a simple 4x4, with the midgate without all the other electronic gadgets and gizmos that will probably be required to step up to the midgate. Basically, give me midgate, four or all wheel drive and power. Keep all the technoweenie stuff off my truck 'cause that's the stuff that will go wrong with it anyway. ;)
