285/70/R17

Dick Cepek makes a 33-12.5/17 Fun Country Radial II. It has a newer tread design similar to the older design.
Looks pretty good.

Hey SARAV,

In answer to your question about the 285/70/R17 rubbing...with stock keys...It all depends on your wheels...stock wheels it shouldn't rub at all..

Bandit?

Hey Bandit3 - You pretty sure about the stock rims not rubbing? I can score the BFGoodrich? Mud Terrain T/A KM LT285/70R17 at my local Costco for just under $850 and they look great - I just don't have to cash right now to lift up the beast . . .

I just had the BFGoodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM LT285/70R17's on American Racing Atlas 17"X8" wheels installed on my '02 AV. They did rub. Had to crank the torsion bars all the way up and do some trimming on the wheel well liners (Did the heat gun thing. Thanks Bandit!) and had to pull the front liner on the driver's side forward and secure it with cable tie to allow clearance. All of these modifications are easy (and I don't mean easy for a licensed mechanic or body shop expert, I mean easy in that I DID IT!) and not seen. (Torsion bar adjusment done at time of tire and wheel install.) Did change ride some, but it is tolerable. Tires make more noise than factory but it is not noticeable. (Of course I have Flowmasters, K&N FIPK II Cold Air Intake system and after-market stereo, so I can't tell you how much louder the tires are) Anyway, based on the amount of rub I had before the modifications, I would bet that you would have to do some modifications even when installing the BFG's on stock wheels! But, the new wheels and tires look great and were worth the effort and expense to me! ;D

I don't know about aftermarket wheels, but I just put 285 70R 17 Goodyear MTs on stock wheels on my '02 Z71. My torsion bars are cranked up 1 1/8 inches. It doesn't rub at all. Here are some pics.

258/75/R16 messures right about 32x11.50 I think!!! So, try searching for that size and you should find a lot more choices. For the 16 inch wheels that is...

I just had the 285/70/17 bfg ta/ko installed on stock wheels for my 2002 cladded z71. No torsion or Ford Keys work done at all. The installers said that they only could get some slight rubbing at full turn with big bump or major body roll. I haven't had an issue in 3 days of driving so far. I really like the look - I would of liked a beefier tire but this was it without getting a lift that I can't afford.

Installed at Big O in Boulder, CO for 900 and some change.

I recommend the BFG AT's. Swapped Goodyear Wranglers for them and have been very happy. Good ride, better tread design and no real increase in road noise.

Good choice. :D

Do you mean 285/75/R16? just wondering... ;)

So what is the biggest tire we can stuff under a 4x4 AV with stock 17's with no lift nor key turning? They should be virtually rub free since the intent is to use them off-roading on tight trails. Another factor is they need to be rated as snow tires (Oregon only recognizes those tires with the snow stamp as true traction tires)...

Well?? ?? ??

I still think the general concensus to this question is 285/70/17's. I know many have indicated that they fit without modding and without rubbing, but not sure anyone has specifically stated that they fit under full suspension motion lock-to-lock etc.

This is the size I plan to get.

Thanks to everyone for their input on this topic.

I will be getting some BFG A/T KO's 285 70/17 for my new (to me) 2004 Av. z71 (yep...finally got me some).  The Av replaces my '98 Chev K1500 Z71 which had the same tires in 285-77/16.  I had these tires for around 30k miles and was very pleased with them.  I don't think this adds much to the Avalanche forum, but they fit with no rubbing.  I kind of think that GM allows for a tire upgrade to this size when they design their trucks (however, I have no back-up for that statement).

Where I live there's plenty of snow, and plenty of off-roading in the summer.  I was never disappointed with these tires on or off road.  They don't do as well in the mud as the 33x12.5R 15 BFG M/T KM's I have on my dedicated trail/mud whumper (a vintage '69 Bronco).....but in dry conditions they're just as good, and way better in the snow and ice.

I've heard some pretty convincing stuff about the Bridgestone Dueler Revo's (even by comparison to the BFG's on the tire rack site), but I've just been so pleased with the BFG's that I don't want to take a chance on something new.

I'm ordering those BFG's in the next day or so.  Thanks to everyone for the input.

I just put 285/70/17 BFG M/T on my avalanche, which has no cladding, and replaced the rim with a moto metal 17 X9, with an offset of 4.5, and have stock keys; they rub a little when I turn the wheel real hard going backward, and  a little when I go forward, but not as noticeable.

I'm going to add the Ford Keys this weekend and see if that corrects my problem.  I think if I had just about an inch and a half, I'd have no more rub.

Need a pic!!!!  Getting ready to do the same thing!!

Here's the pic of the 285/70/17 on Moto Metal 17" with a 4.5 offset; also put Ford Keys in and raised front 1 1/4 inch.  Had to trim a little on the front bumper plastic and very little on inside front wheel well, plastic.

I just bought Bridgstone 285/70/R17 Dueller REvo's. Great tires so far and absolutley no rubbing. Stock 2002 rims with no lifts or Ford Keys.  A lot cheaper then the Goodyears. I paid $160 per tire.

Hope this helps

Well my BFG 285 70-R17's fit and have rubbed once going into a Dairy Queen with a steep off angle ramp.

The second time they rubbed, i was hauling a Honda Foreman Rubicon 500 (just barely fit in the back with the tailgate down - fender flares of the ATV pulled inward).? Anyhow, I hit a bump and the tires tore the rear driver's side plastic inner fenderwell liner off.? This is the piece of plastic that covers the top shock absorber mount.? I'm pretty sure that's where it hit, because the cover flares out right at the top of the shock absorber.? I'm leaving it off!

We got a about 3" of snow a few days ago..a fair amount of ice on the side streets too....the BFG's AT's are working great.? Thanks to the G80 locker, I've been leaving it in 2wd!

Here's a pic with the tires...not great for detail of the tires, but you get the idea.

I just installed Hankook DynaPro RT03 Mud Terrains on my 04 Avy with stock 17" wheels with a keyed front end (no lift).  They look great  and really fill the fender wells with only slight trimming in the rear wells.  They really ride great and I couldn't be happier.  Try OK 4WD & Auto out of NJ for good pricing (roughly $150ea).  Tell them Chad from Quigley referred you.  Good luck!

Hey guys, check out my thread titled Cooper Discoverer S/T, it's jsut below this one. The tires come in a 275/70-17 and are incredible. Lots of pics of the tires. They are the most aggressive all-terrain tire that is on the market. A perfect mix. I bought the tires tuesday and have already worked them over...
check em out if you're interested.

Also, if anyone has 16's, I have two 285/75-16 BFGoodrich Mud T/A's listed on ebay with about half tread.  Used them on my old truck during hunting season but recently bought the avy with 17's and put those Cooper's on it.

I carry a Cooper Discover A/T around as my 2nd spare (under the AV) 315/75-16
Nice tire. But I will keep My Interrcos A/T's  >:D

the cooper s/t is much more aggressive than the a/t.

Cooper Discoverer S/T  This tire is a step below their STT very aggressive mud terrain tire.

Hey Guys,
I just puchased the Cooper STT 285/70/17. Awesome tire! I put is to some tests on my stock Avy. No rubbin to very little rubbing when the wheel is cranked all te way. They did crank the tension bars to level my ride out a bit so I'm sure that helped with less rubbing. I got a killer deal out here in cali also. $199 per tire and the 4th tire was free! I'm Stoked!

Just got a quote from Tire Kingdom in my area for BFG 285/70/17s...i have 2 of BFG KTM 285/70/17 FOR SELL ANY ONE TO BUY
just over $1,000 including roadhazard ?

I know they are cheaper to buy from tirerack.com, but I'd still have to find someone to install, and I've had fairly good experience with Tire Kingdom in the past. ?I figure I've got about 10-15K left on the stock Wranglers to save my pennies for these ?:cautious:
