Who makes this tire...other than GoodYear? I'd like a "beefier" looking tire and I want to keep my stock rims (Z71 - 17 inch). I don't really want to spend $200 a tire for something I will mainly be driving on the road. I like the look though. Is there another tire I can put on it (ie: 33's)? I'm planning on putting the F@rd Keys in and leveling out the front. So, I want something to fill the wheel well up more. Would a 33/12.50/17 fit?
How about the Firestone Destinations MT 285/75/R16

(Eventually, I'm looking at putting a body lift (3 inch) on.)

Thanks! ;D

what about this tire...

this is the Dunlop Radial Mud Rover. the price is $106 for the 265/70/17's. available at www.tirerack.com.

I have got that exact size BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's on my Avalanche and like them alot...like you say they really fill up the wheelwell.

I think they are as big as you can go without a lift ;D

i totally missed the whole point of your question. >:D i never read far enough to see you wanted a larger tire altogether/ different size. sorry. i thought you still wanted the 265/70/17.
now i see the title... "285/70/17". see what happens when you read?

Check out the ratings and the reviews of the various tires.

I research my mods including tires... so far I haven't heard many speak ill of the BFG AT/KOs. If you search hard enough you can find them (on sale) for under the $160/tire price. Spendy but worth it and they do last.

Tirerack.com usually has most tires I think, and the pickin' is slim for 285/70/17 :cautious: I'm going to likely get BFG A/T's in that size. Other options seem to be limited to BFG's and Wrangler MTR's :cautious:

I don't think the new highly-regarded Bridgestone Dueler Revo is avail in that size...have to drop down to 265 :(

I've cranked up my factory keys and got about 1 1/8 in. lift in the front. Has anyone put the 285/70/17s on their Av with stock keys? Do they rub? I know they won't with Ford keys.

my understanding is that they do not, even without cranking, but I haven't personally tried.

Hi JustMove,

Here is a pic of my AV with a 3" body lift and BFG 285, 70R17's...

I had the dealer install the lift and tires when I purchased the AV. I really like the BFG's. They handle very well. They are a bit firmer than the stock Goodyear's or the Michellin's I had on my last AV but they aren't bad. You will feel the road bumps a bit more and have a few more rattles in the cab. I'm sure that part of that is the recommended pressure is quite a bit higher than the stock tire. I love the looks of the aggresive tread pattern as well. I hope this helps.

That looks good. (y)

I'm going to try the Ford keys and see if that gives me enough. I've seen several with that mod at the GTGs and they seem to work. Worst case, I'll go with the body lift.

I couldn't fit BFG AllTerrain KO 285/75/16 which is about same size as 285/70/17on mine without rubbing so I put 265/75/16s on. Stock wheels are what 16x6.5 or 16x7 and mine ar 16x8. Not much difference in ride, I like them. Maybe a lift before next tire purchase so I can go bigger.

The 285/75/R16's is actually slightly bigger than the 285/70/R17. The 285/75/R16's should fit with the F@rd Keys.
EDIT: I went and traded the '02 but kept the 16 8 wheels with 265/75/16 BFG AT KO so now I have 10 like new wheels. I'll have to wear out some rubber before I consider doing anything.

I see toyo just came out with a new tire in a 285/70/17, all terrain $165 a piece, I might buy these or just go with new 16's, like you said very few tires to choose from in 17's, cya matt

Hey SARAV,

In answer to your question about the 285/70/R17 rubbing...with stock keys...It all depends on your wheels...stock wheels it shouldn't rub at all..but with aftermarket wheels it will rub that little black square of plastic in the back of the front driverside wheelwell..but I fixed it with a heat gun in about 15 minutes and you can't tell I did anything to it..now that little square is just flat instead of sticking out...Since I did it with a heat gun once it cooled,it stayed that way forever :)

I hope this helps..any more questions don't hesistate to ask :)

Bandit?

Just got a quote from Tire Kingdom in my area for BFG 285/70/17s...

just over $1,000 including roadhazard

I know they are cheaper to buy from tirerack.com, but I'd still have to find someone to install, and I've had fairly good experience with Tire Kingdom in the past. I figure I've got about 10-15K left on the stock Wranglers to save my pennies for these :cautious:

Just priced BFG TA/KO in 285/75-16 at Sam's Club 665.00 for all mounted and balanced. Sounds like a good price from what I am seeing. Sorry I didn't see any 17's :cautious:

Got Special order (3-5 Business days) from Sam's CLub 285 17's Mud T/As @ $204 a tire - total all done with local taxes was around $860. Had to talk then into it as the 265's are only ones listed for the Av, but other than a note on my sales / install slip stating not recommended tire size - all is fine.

Special orders can be done on-line and sent to local club (you pay when you get them installed), or ordered at club (you have to pay then), I would check with them first to insure they will install - local Costco would not - prices was about the same.

Hope this helps.

have you considered the Goodyear Wrangler MT/S?

Chevalanche,

Not sure who you addressed this to, I looked at them, actually GMAN's got them on his Av, and the BFG Mud T/A's are pretty much the same, but I like the T/As better, which I guess is why they are both out there! I am sure either will work just about as well, it's all what your are looking for IMHO.

I got some Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip tires. They are more a tire comparable to the Goodyear MT/Rs. They say they are 265/70/17 on the sidewall but in reality they are over 32.5" tall. You don't get the extra 1" of width when going to the 285s but you get the height. I bought mine from www.desertrat.com. You can find information about the tires if you are interest at Dirt Grip Tires
