4.10 Rear End Mileage

My new AV has 3.73's, I wanted 4.10's but could not find it with the color I wanted, so still O/K.

My point...........I have had Vettes, SS 396 Chevelles, and have an 86 GMC shortbed with GM crate motor, etc., LIFE IS SHORT !!!!

When the little needle points to "E" I buy more gas.

Just my opinion, Thanks.

Who buys an AVALANCHE and worries about the mileage? Does it really matter? I wonder if the guy with the chart is going to do MPG plots for travelling through mud, snow and maybe mountainous terrain! :)

Wow, after reading this I'm jealous...
Sounds to me like the 4.10's get the same mileage as the 3.73 (for the most part).

*wishing mine had a 4.10*

I have enjoyed reading these threads on rear ends and gas mileage especially since I am in the process of ordering one.

Everybody wants to have more power and better gas mileage.

If you are ordering a vehicle, you have the following powertrain options:

1500 with a 3.73
1500 with a 4.10
2500 with a 3.73
2500 with a 4.10

There has gotta be over 100 posts on which combination is best. Everyone has an opinion on what is good and bad about each particular configuration. I think someone even spent $2000 to convert a 3.73 to 4.10... so much for putting your money where your mouth is.

I don't think there is much argument that the best mileage comes from the 1500 with 3.73 and the worst is the 2500 with a 4.10. It comes down to how much power, mileage, you (need or want) and how much you are willing to pay for it. For some the $s and mileage is a non-issue, while others pay very close attention to things like that. Those in the later category generally drive "economy cars".

My AV was a dealer demo and they had lost the window sticker. I recently emailed Chevy to see if they could send me a replacement and their response was that the dealer would be the best source for this info. Well, I remember when I bought the truck the dealer told me that Chevy was the best place to get the replacement.

All this to say that I don't know if I have 4:10 or not. How can I tell? I do have excellent response off the line (nothing like my old Z28, but good nonetheless).

It wasnt quite that much, but close - haven't regretted it at all - I personally don't thing they should offer the 3.73 on the 2500 at all.

Kodio - check you glove compartment - should have the option codes in there that you can cross reference.

Quick test - drive 70 MPH, 4.10's will be at about 2400 RPM with stock tires.

If you've got 3.73 gears, then the RPM at 70 will be lower, more like 2200 RPM.

Thanks,

Haven't taken the time to locate the codes, but on my drive into work this morning I got up to 70 mph for a short time (busy roads) and my RPMs were under 2000. More like 1900. I was in Overdrive.

So I 'm guessing I've got 3.73s.

3.73 is GT4
4.10 is GT5

The model and option sticker should be in your glovebox. Hope this helps. I am assuming 2002 and 2003 codes are the same. :B:

We've had our Onyx Z71 w/4.10 for a week now and I just filled up. DIC states we averaged 13.4 MPG. I was hoping for more, but like you guys said, we bought the wrong car if we wanted economy.

I thought I wanted 3.73s and was bummed when we got home with it and realized it was 4.10s. After reading this thread I feel better. Thanks guys! :)

So how, exactly, do you get better mileage? You you guys using the burn and coast method of driving, taking off slower, or what?
