Does anyone have the 4 bangger installed with the factory head unit. I have an 04 AV with the standard unit without the Bose system. I am looking to upgrade the head unit but I don't know which to do first, install the 4 bangger with the stock head unit or install a new head unit first. Any advice?

either way you will need an amp eventually. i say go with the 4 Banger first. then, you can get the HU later.

A new head unit first. Most aftermarket H/U's come with RCA cables and Remote Turn On Leads which you will nead for an amp. Other wise you will have to buy converters. A H/U will give you better sound quality and some of them have subwoofer gains built in to control the volume of the subs separately.

-aftermarket radios come with RCA output jacks.

-you will have to purchase the cables.

-the amp will have a blue "remote" wire that will have to be hooked up to a "switched" 12-volt supply. this will turn the amp on/off.

-if you want to use the RCA cables you will need to buy a hi/lo level converter; usually not very expensive.

-you could use the speaker level inputs instead of RCA jacks if you have that option

-most aftermarket HU's will give you better control over the sub, but what's the point if you have no sub to control? that's why i said get the sub first. you will have decent bass until you can get the HU. if you get the HU all you will have is the HU with mediocre OEM speakers. at least the sub will give the shallow OEM's some depth.

here are a few things to look at...

Amp Interface

Pioneer

i have the previous style of this HU. it is a very nice HU in my opinion. gave me so much control over all the speakers. to include the sub. so much in fact, i hated to disconnect the battery when doing mods. took me a minute to figure out how to reset my levels to each one of the settings.

I have an existing amp that I used with 2 - JL 10's to install with the subs. The amp is quite old, think it is a Pioneer Premier 404.

not sure what the specs are on your amp. i tried looking them up with the info you provided. no luck though.

good lookin' out "Hangman". that would be a great idea. it is very possible that one of the members has something that might catch your interest as far as the audio components go.

I have this setup and could wait for the HU but not the bass. I went ahead and tied a new AMP (JL 500.1) into the HU and it is running the 4 banger. I also had a gain knob installed under my dash so that I could control the bass level from up front instead of having to get under the rear seat where the amp is located.

Good Luck

Hangman,
I am finding everything so far even though I have only been a member for a week or so.

I live in north St. Augustine.

i thought about you as i was typing. i could not remember if you were running the stock, or aftermarket, HU.

see. first the bass. then the added features of the aftermarket HU. that's what i would do if i could not get both at the sametime.

Punisher,
I bought my amp probably about 6-7 years ago so you might not be able to find the specs on it. Thanks for looking though.

Start at the front and work your way back if you can't get it all at once. HU, door speakers + amp(s), sub(s).

Didn't know you had an amp already. I usually start a new system from the H/U and then the highs and mid's and end with subs. I had some subs left over and wanted to throw them in first but my bed leaks so while I'm waiting for a remedy for that I changed out my H/U and 6-1/2's.
