4 Wheel HI Problems, HELP!

No problem when my truck is in 2 wheel drive, but when I shift into 4 HI it makes groaning noises around corners and feels like the wheels are locking up (choppy feeling). Iam wondering if thats normal and if anyone has experienced it?

Z71 1500 4x4

thanks

Yea i was thinkin the same thing (diff), but the groining noise is coming from the front of the truck, the rear tires seem to be slipping and chopping a bit. Does that help? Again this doesnt happen when its in 2 HI just 4 HI, I havent tryed 4 LO as of yet...... :cautious:

Just a quick question to eliminate the simple causes... On what kind of road surface are you experiencing this?

If it's on dry pavement, it's normal. 4Hi/4Lo should only be used where the wheels can slip: snow, mud, sand, etc. If the wheels can't slip a little you will experience torque lockup, especially when turning. Things will feel like they are binding up, the gears will make noise, and it'll take more gas to keep moving. As the torque builds it will get stronger than the tire traction and a wheel will skip (usually back since there's less weight on it.)

Remember, this isn't full-time four wheel drive.

Now, if you are getting this on snow, sand, or other slippery surfaces, that's a real issue.

When you have it in 4wd, your wheels are "locked". When you turn, your outside wheel has to make more revolutions than the inside. This creates a bind on the axle trying to keep the wheels turning the same.

Try not turning as sharp when it's engaged in 4wd, hi or low.

Yes this was happening on pavement, thanks alot for helping me out guys! Great posts! I swear this is the best site on the web!!! Thanks again guys for the info! :B:

i always use 4 wd for traction on loose surfaces on hard dry pavement the drive train can have no slip like on dirt snow and wet roads. my old k-5 was the same way and would feel like it was binding up in a tight turn on dry, like in a parking lot.. I use the av to pull boats, get lined up on the ramp backing in on a straight line and always roll ten or 15 feet or more to be sure i gat a good lock in , and i can feel the 4wd and use it for what its there forTRACTION. I think you are experiencing the 4wd action, and always move the truck a few feet to get engaged after you got the solid light on the 2/4 wheel button before you put a load on it.. not on dry roads though!!

Lol yes, and for the records, I didnt hit the 4 HI in dry pavement, I went into a feild today, and when i got back on-road, I forgot to switch it back to 2 HI, thats when I experienced the problem, but I never knew that 4 HI had such a big impact on dry pavement. Hey but now I know!

Thanks again guys!

4X4 should NOT be used on pavement. There is no slippage in the wheels/drivetrain. As previously stated 4 Hi or 4 Low should only be used in dirt or snow or sand. Any surface for the most part other than pavement.

You definitely should not be in 4 hi or 4 low on pavement, as you have found out! I assume that you are now in 2 hi and the problem is gone? You should make sure that it's not doing the same thing in loose dirt. How long have you been driving around in 4x and at what speeds?

1AVY aren't these guys just 2 awssome, if your AV doesnt smell right check here, if your av needs to be cleaned right u come here, waxing tips u come here aaaaaaaanything, you come here buddy,

that was 4hi, 4 lo your truck would bearly move.

Yea boss, I agree Heavy D!
Its not doing the same thing on loose dirt. Once I hit it into 2 HI its all good(on pavement), I just went on some dirt roads yesterday- average speed 62 km/h, as I said I forgot it was on 4HI when i got back on road.

Thanks again guys

It is OK to use 4HI at the track for 1/4 mile runs, just don't make sharp turns during the run and downgrade at the end.

Your question has already been answered. When in doubt, just use Auto. The last thing you want to do is mess up your drive train. To be in 4 Hi or 4 low the wheels need to be able to turn at different speeds. On soft ground or snow.... this is possible. On dry pavement it is not the result is that it will cause your driveline to bind. :0:
