Well. We went off-roading with the Michigan Jeepers group last weekend.

The group consisted of:

1 Chevy Avalanche Z-71 (Me)
2 Suzuki things
1 Izuzu 4Runner
15 Jeep Grand Cherokees
26 Jeep Wrangler types

45 Vehicles Total.
About 100 people. Men, Women, Children and infants. It was the annual Michigan Jeepers Family Fun Day.
The Group.

In the Avy were My Wife, two Nephews and Me.

It is completely stock except for High Octane Tuning by the Hypertech Programmer III.

I lowered the air pressure to 13.5 lbs in the front tires and 13 lbs in the rear tires. Put the shift lever in '3' and pressed the Tow/Haul button for the whole day.

I have to say, we were the talk of the town! We went to the Miltary base in Grayling Michigan. Had a 20 or so mile run with a dozen hill climbs.

The truck was very impressive.

The group used CB Channel 4 for comminucation. We decided to keep quiet when people started talking about the black monster chevy while we were still in the K-mart parking lot. Remember most of these trucks were short wrangler types. Small next to an AVY.

About half the jeeps out there were stock, and about half were built for this kind of play every day. Many Raised Air Intake stacks and exhaust, tires as tall as 40 inches, engines that were 'blueprinted' for power.

The day was great, we played at Camp Grayling all day. Saw lots of tanks, humvees, anti aircraft guns and other units setup for training exercises. Covered Guns and a Canon

At one point there were three A-10 Tank Killers in flight right over us and shooting at tanks in the field. (We were stopped for about 1/2 hour for a repair on a jeep.)

It was about 3 miles or so to the first hill climb, to get there we went through many rivers and mud puddles. I have a new appreciation for what a mud puddle is, in the eyes an off-roader. AVY all wet

The AVY went through 20-30 inches of mud and water many times without ever even noticing. On the CB, there were many comments about how many jeeps it was going to take to get that over-rated chevy out of a hole! The AVY held her own even when some of the jeeps opted to go *around* the mud.

The Hill Climbs:
WOW! Look at it go!
That's all we heard on the radio. The AVY did great, 45 - 60 degree inclines on all sand were no problem. There were many hills where only three or four trucks made the climb, my AVY was always standing proud at the TOP of the hill.

Many jeeps had to have a 20-30 mph running start to reach the top. Many jeeps were half way up and then their wheels just stopped turning, even though they were giving it all it had. Then they had the uneasy task of backing down the hill.

The AVY's torque raised it's head and said 'Stand aside, Boys'. The AVY just walked up the hills as if it were a slight grade on the highway!

Well, not quite! The one hill that was managed by only three of us was certainly an excercise for the AVY.

Although, everyone below said the AVY made it look easy, I had my foot through the floorboard just to keep it moving. I had not experienced that before. WOT and moving only 1-2 mph with no tire spin.

It was nice to have 100 people cheering the only Chevy in the bunch.

It was my wife's first time out. She wasn't to pleased about taking a $39,000.00 truck with 4000 miles on it into the woods for some off-roading. She and one nephew opted out of the first hill climb and took three pictures with her shaking hands as I headed up.

I then made my wife and wimpy nephew get in and took them up the hill. Well, that's all it took, my wife is hooked.

This is also why we don't have a pile of cool pictures. My photographer wouldn't get out again! She didn't want to miss the fun!

All in all, what a great time. We had picnic fixings and a Bar-B-Que grill stowed nicely away in the back of the AVY. When the group stopped for lunch, our AVY was the main attraction. We brought extra hot dogs and kept on grillin' as long as people were lookin'!

I am now faced with one problem. My wife wants to continue 4 wheeling. BUT she wants to do it with air, power windows, locks, leather interior, and so on... She says I should go buy another AVY and we'll use the first one for off-roading!

Like a Rock!

That is totally AWESOME!!! I wonder if they have something similar here on the pacific west coast. We dont have many cool mountains and open land like the central and eastern folks...

2 thumbs up. I loved that story!!!

Great pictures! Looks like you and the family a blast. The jeep trails the 4x4 clubs in my area use are barely wide enough to drive jeep through. I think they do it on purpose to keep the guys with full size trucks in check. Your pix look like great fun. Nothing like watching folks have to eat their words.

Neat story! Sure looks like you had a blast. Summer's coming - time to find some four-wheelin' roads here in Colorado. Played around some years ago in my S-10 Blazer - through some pretty tight stuff where I don't think the Av would make it - at least not without major paint striping from the underbrush  But your story got the juices flowing again - just have to find some Av compatible locations!

Awesome post my man jasgot !!! You created a large amount of envy in me !! I would have LOVED to have been there for that.
Sounds like a ton of fun, and even moreso to prove the Jeepies wrong...... >:D
Laterz.......Keep hilling dude !!! (y)

Great report! Hopefully you can get some more pics of the AV in action from the other people.

I've wheeld with Jeeps before in our company 4x4 club. They might be able to do the skinny trails better, but even my old Pathfinder did better than them on hill climbs, river crossings, oh, and comfort. :) We're haivng a Trail 101 class this summer. Can't wait for the AV comments.

Hey Bruce; I am in Seattle. Which club are you in? Can anyone join and go through the 101 class?

I noticed in your pics you have the running boards, how did they fair? I have been wanting to go to Paragon Adventure Park in Hazelton, Pa. but was told the running boards would probably take a beating on uneven trails. They have trails rated all way up to class 5, boulder climbing.

SShhhhwwweeeeeeeet!!
Makes me proud enough to cry

Truely impressive and kudos for showing up the jeeps.

WOT and creeping...must have been steep. Glad to see that the Av is truely dependable offroad.

Like I said, it makes me proud to be an owner of one.

The running boards did just fine. I didn't do anything that would require a short wheel base though. So I didn't get a chance to set the weight of the truck on the running boards alone. (Not that I wanted too either!)

A few of the real 4x4 enthusiasts came over in the morning and gave the AVY a look over. Some of them really examined the running boards and said " Sweet! built in rocker savers!"

If that helps you out at all......

I have to say..... It was a real show of torque. (I think) If I understand torque correctly.

That being the case, I have to wonder if a cat-back system with less low end torque would have performed as well? gandolphxx?????

Makes me want to supply more air and leave the exhaust the same!

I don't think that would have hurt, the low end loss is not that bad, the question is what shift were you in, I would assume 1st and 4x4, I wouldn't bet on the 4L60E downshiffting all the way in a situation like that, but have not tried it yet.

In any event, more air helps, the last thing you want is to open the exhaust and not open the induction.

Haven't taken the Av..offroad yet....I would probably have to head up north or to the west to get to any kind of trails etc.....

Glad to see the Av is fairing so well in the offroad environment.....many people would say it's too big or too heavy.......just goes to show ya' this truck can do it all... :B:

Wow, that's great! I'm glad that someone did this to their AV. I'm too anal to get my white AV dirty. I can proudly say what you did CAN be done!

Hey Guest User,

There is a a location in California that is the premier 4x4 location, it is called the Rubicon, only the nastiest 4x4 trail in the country. This is where Jeep goes to test its new models. The Av would be too big and wide for parts of the Trail, I do it with a Jeep CJ.

The next best place in California where many a clubs go is Hollister, the 4x4 capital. There is every type of terrian out there, also they have classes for beginners up to expert. They teach you how to drive your truck.

This place is awesome, completely awesome, The Av performs great, but bring a wench, I needed mine twice.

Just in case you get tired of four wheelin? ;)

This thread is Awesome. Great story Jasgot. I once owned a Cherokee and it was horrible off road. Why would a company put Touring Tires without a Tire Upgrade option on an Off Road vehicle? My jeep failed many easy tasks because of this problem. I was leasing it so I didn't want to put any money into it. My Avy on the other hand has passed all the tests my jeep has failed. I live on Long Island so the terrain is not that challenging but my Avy is at home in Pure, Deep, Dry, Beach sand with 25 psi's where the Jeep would dig down and spin all four tires with 12 psi's. I am so proud of my truck. WE all should be!!!! :D
