WOW I am a tech and I would hesitate to tackle either one of these trannys - even the dealer replaces the units rather than repair them. Hey but if your game and have all the time and resources (wait I still would not do it) 
Don't get me wrong - this is just for reference, not suggesting that anybody start rebuilding in their garage

I was surprised when my brother-in-law told me the same thing. He said they only swap tranys with new or factory rebuilt ones. He's currently the service manager at a Ford truck dealership but has had the same position with BMW, Infinity and a few other manufactures too. He says that it?s pretty much common in the industry. They also do the same on rear ends too.
