OK this is my first time at this so ,,, I have a 03 avalanche . I have had it for about 8 months and have never used the 4wd . I tried it last night for something to mess with and when it changed from 4h and 4L it would make a loud ding sound . What gives ?

Hmmm, I don't use my 4L much. When I did, I had it in a slow roll in neutral if I remember. There was some goin's on, lights blinking and it shifted into the mode ok, but I didn't remember any loud sound. There was discussion somewhere here regarding the "Check 4WD Drive" light and moisture, service notes, etc. (I guess you may have read them.)
Interested to hear other's on this one.. ???

Mine does the same thing going into 4WD Lo. I had the dealer look into it and they said it was normal. At first I didn't think he was right, but we went out on to the lot and tried about 5 other trucks. (3 Av's and 2 others) and they all made the same "twang" sound. So I am not worried about it any more. ;D

I wish I could remember who on this site said it but, when describing the function of the 4 wd buttons...If you need to use the 4WD Lo, you are driving somewhere you shouldn't be! ;D

Are you using the Lo gear on ice or snow only? Since all the wheels are "locked" together, turning a corner can destroy the gears if the the wheels can't slip.

yup, shouldnt even leave it in 4wheel drive, or even auto 4wd unless your on slipperly stuff cuz it locks the front wheels, and if the rears slip then the transfer case locks in the fronts... all it does is frys your pinion gears....

its like locking in the front hubs and disconnecting the transfer case... ford guys do this alot(they still use a solid axel :eek:), then they whine to the dealership why they have to buy new gears...

Mine makes the same ding and I'm not worried about it.

I've only used my 4lo in deep sugar-sand here in Florida. That stuff will really put some drag on the drivetrain, so the lo gear is great. Put right back into 4hi after I got out of that sand pit.

I think I only used 4WD lo once, when stuck in about a foot deep mud.

When there is a few inches of snow on the ground, I may use 4WD Hi. If it is intermittent snow, I put it in Auto 4WD.

Let me tell you, after driving around in a lot of snow this past weekend, the Av is an absolute pleasure to drive in inclement weather! :B: I've never felt so reassured before. Of course, I don't let myself get too overconfident and end up in a ditch somewhere! ;)

Used my 4WD for the first time with our Blizzard conditions here in Connecticut and could not believe how well it worked. Have had Bronco's for last 10 years or so and they were good, but this truck is like a polar bear. I am a volunteer fireman, and getting around in this weather is very important.

When your only complaint when it snows is that your floor mats are getting too much snow on them, your doing OK.

I read the manual when I first got my 02 2500 and I thought it said to stop the vehicle and shift the transmission into neutral when going IN or OUT of 4wd Lo! I have used it to pull some stumps in 4wd Lo the beast is a real monstor. (y) I have not experienced a clunk or ding sound!

It will usually go into 4lo (with transmission in Neutral) without the truck moving. The manual, I believe, recommends that you be rolling 1-2 mph ideally. Sometime this just isn't possible.

Mine "pings" whether rolling or not.

I also think the sound is normal. Every truck ever I've used tends to "clunk" into low range. The Av is no different. I really like the fact that the Av will not allow you to shift into 4-low if you are going too fast. Could save you some expensive repairs. I've used 4-low in the Av quite a bit while deer hunting. Mainly for going down steep inclines. The extra compression saves your brakes.

What are the gear ratio in 4 low?

2wd = 3.73
4 hi = 3.73
4low = ???

2wd = 4.11
4 hi = 4.11
4low = ???

thanks,
Faver
