4X4 or 4X2 which is better to tow?

Looking at a New 2004 Av 1500 4X2 for 26K. I need to tow a 3000lbs TT. Would I be better to buy this Av or go for a 4X4? Most trips will be under 200 miles on fairly flat terrain.

With 4X4 you would do 90% of your driving in 2-Hi anyway, so the difference then becomes losing a couple hundred pounds ot towing capacity and losing 1 MPG per gallon.

HOWEVER - if you're doing, or ever plan to do the steep and slippery boat ramp thing 4WD would be very helpful.

No matter what you decide make sure you get the Z-66 or Z-71 package. They are both very much well worth the dollars!

One other note - 4WD will in most parts of the country hold resale value over 2WD, so your long term ROI (on a depreciating asset) will be better.

Either will work great. The 4x2 will give you a little bit towing capacity since it is a little bit lighter. Sounds like you are towing something fairly light anyway, so go with what you need the vehicle for.

Will you use 4 wheel drive often?
Do you drive in the snow?

If you will not reasonably use the 4x4 feature, get the 4x2 with the towing package, 4.10 rear end and limited slip rear end.

Just my opinion, I tow a 5500 lb TT and a 4000lb horse trailer fairly often and have been glad that I had the 4x4 when I went camping and horseback riding in muddy areas.

Ok

4x2 will work fine for most areas of the country. It all depends.

My Personal note:
The best thing about 4x4 is when it is raining and you are towing that trailer. MANY times the rear wheels will start slipping, spinning the rear wheels. I simply put it in 4-auto and no problem on wet roads. I know traction assist on the 4x2 will work somewhat the same, I think they still offer it, but their is no replacement for 4x4 in slippery conditions.

I bought a 200 Silverado and regreted not getting the 4X4. I did not make this same mistake when I bought the AV. If you can afford it, I would say go with the 4X4.

I bought a Z66. It rides great, has autoleveling (great for trailers) AND best of all, has Positrac AND Traction control...

No wheel spinning.

I had a 4x4 before, in Michigan. When it gets slippery, the traction control keeps you under control. Sure it takes a little bit longer to get going, you do get going though. And no butt end spinouts because you punched the gas pedal..

As far as the added resale value, it costs more to begin with when you buy 4x4 also. Plus there's insurance costs too.
