Anyone else having the problems of CD's not playing when the temps are cool (30F)? Both yesterday and this morning the CD's that were left in overnight would not play. The player does NOT display any error message, infact it actually is telling me what track it "supposedly" is playing. I can change tracks or CD's, but I don't get any sound. I do however hear the CD player making "mechanical" noises.

ps
these are CD-Rs, but they play fine once the temperature in the cab is warmer. I have not tried to put in a regular CD on a cold morning to see if that could be causing the problem. I'll check tomorrow morning seeing as it's supposed to be cold again.

Interesting.....for a test try this with purchased CDs......

Maybe the CDrs are not stable at low temps....

On my 2001 Jeep GC I remmeber the same type of problem and was told back then that condensation inside the CD player would sometimes cause issues ???

possible on the laser as it heats up....good point

I have a 6 disc cd player and it doesn't work when it gets warm. When you play a cd in it for over 30 mins, it sound like you have a busted speaker. The service department took it out and had to send it in to be fixed. Do other dealers do the samething or do they give you a new stereo? I have been waiting on mine to get back along time. I have OnStar and it would be nice to get to use this feature again. I have a picture of this empty hole I have to look at when I drive my new North Face.

They told me they send them in and get them fixed. I want a new one. This is going on 3 weeks with no Stereo and OnStar. My Avalanche is only a month old. Tell me what to say to them. Because they already told me they won't give me a new one.

Go to another dealer!! They should take care of you no problem and no questions. Tell them that you and your family are not safe without the onstar!! You might also talk to the sales manager (as you will have a survey coming) and get a little upset with he/she and see if he/she won't help you. Remind them as a last resort of that all important survey that you still need to fill out and they will typically bend over backwards and light themselves on fire to make sure you give a good survey.

A good ideal. I forgot about the survey. I can use that as a tool. They have been pretty good to me, except for the Stereo. They Gave me a roof rack, and only charged me 310.00 for the Gm Brush Guard, installed. But my AV just looks really bad without that Stereo. If that doen't work, Do I need to get the Stereo back to go to another dealer?

Kodiak is correct about that, as in them bending over backwards to get good scores on the survey. I'd have them go pull a unit from a vehicle in stock while I waited, and simply tell them to do so. If they want to send yours in for repair, fine.....as long as you have a new unit that day, and it shouldn't take very long either. Hell, my Chevy dealer was much more curteous, respectful and seemingly glad that I brought my vehicle to them than my pathetic Audi dealer that works on a car that cost twice what the Av did. I certainly left impressed and happy.

DS, that is a good ideal. I will give them until Monday, because they have to put on a new shock for me. Everyone Thanks for all of the good advice. I will use every bit of it.

DS, a good idea, and possible--just not quick as I learned the other day. These new radios are something else!! If they pull one from another vehicle, they will need to hook up the tech II, get some info from your car as well as the donor, call gm, upload the info, wait, download a new data file, upload the new file to your car. This process took about 2 hrs for one of our customers doing the same thing.

If I can get a new one from the dealer, about how long does it take to get it in? It looks like I can give some Karma now, I will give you guys an applaud.

Well, 45 degrees this morning and none of the CD's would play this morning . I replaced the CD-R's with 'real' ones and it made no difference. I ejected the CD and looked at it - it looked clean and dry so I put it back in and now it won't keep the CD in, it keeps kicking it out saying "CHECK CD". Just for the hell of it I pulled the CD out and tried to warm it up in front of the vent and pop it back in, same thing "CHECK CD"!!!! I guess I'll bring it up at the dealership at noon today when I pick up my vent shades and bug deflector. We'll see what they have to say. I just hope they don't pull mine out for 3 weeks! :6:

Update, I am getting really upset over my 6 disc cd player. They got it back, and it didn't work. I ask for a new one and they told me no. I know this is a small problem, but I don't like it. I waited there for 4 hours for them to try to get it installed and working. No luck at all. They have to send it back in and let someone try to fix it again. I miss my Stereo and OnStar.

Remind them that OnStar is a safety feature - if you get sick it will send help, if you have a crash it will send help, if you are lost it can help, if your truck is stolen it can send help. Tell them if you are injured or worse without OnStar you will sue the crap out of the dealer - make sure this gets communicated to the Service Manager, the General Manager, and the dealer owner, in that order.

Time to complain to GM and get a regional rep invovled. Worse, they are holding you hostage by having your stereo. When my stereo started displaying Klingon on my Pontiac Montana the General, where I also bought my Avalanche, replaced it with a new one, no questions asked, five thousand miles OUT of warranty while doing other work. I was shocked when I picked up my van.

I'll say it again - lousy dealer service is the number one problem facing Chevrolet today. If they could fix that, they would run over Ford and Toyota in a heartbeat (no pun intended) because their product quality has improved VASTLY in the last 10 to 15 years.

BTW - on the original question, your description souncs like a condesnation issue to me also. The laser heats up and droplets condense on the discs to the laser can't read them. As the cab warms up from you running the heat, etc. the droplets evaporate and poof - everything plays again.

As noted I would try regular CD's as an option. I would also try empting out your CD player and then putting in CD-R's that were warm and kept in the house.

How about plugging in a hair dryer and defrosting the inside of the CD player - I don't have that kind of player, but don't they all get loaded into the front? This is just a WAG, but maybe you have too much humidity in the truck at the end of the day. You don't have any water leaks into the interior, do you? Have you tried using an approved CD laser lens cleaner?

Thank You for your response, My AV has 1500 miles on it and I would just like to have the Stereo and OnStar. They even made jokes telling me that my son could sing to me. I love my North Face Av But Just a small thing like this really can make me upset. They really need to get it together by the end of this week. And I do feel like it is a safety problems also, because of OnStar. Thanks Guys

CD player still not working. Left the house at noon yesterday (55 degrees), drove 20 minutes and still no go. Same story, pop out the CD and try to put it in and it won't keep it in. My wife took out the av on Sat morning and she said it worked for her. (I have my doubts :cautious:). Seeing as she mentioned I thought I'd try to enter in "driver 2" and see what happened - guess what...Nothing!

I will try the theory of taking a "warm" cd from the house and see what happens. I doubt the humidity or cold is the issue as I never had any problems with the player in my Astro.

The av goes in to have the player looked at Wed (8th) (but I least I've done some trouble shooting for those GM techs ;). I am having the drivers side mirror looked. Mine vibrates also (as mentioned in other forums) and no bug sheild yet, but will have one this weekend. Also getting the black plastic door trim replaced - I mentioned this in another post.

I will keep everyone updated

ps
NO DAMP CARPETS YET! I haven't tried an approved CD cleaner yet, but don't think I will.

That in itself is worth the call to GM,... using the service managers phone,... it tends to get their attention. Also, get the regional manager involved. Have the general manager give you the name and phone number for the regional manager so you can call and set up an appointment.

You can also tell them you want your parts back so you can take your business elsewhere. They cannot hold, or keep your parts when you request them unless they give you new ones such as a warranty replacement, then they have to send the replaced parts back to GM.

Another avenue is to consult a lemon law attorney in your area. I have dealt with one, and he made a phone call to the dealership to see what was going on just to let them know I was serious.

It seems to be a game to some. Do contact the Regional Manager, do have the service manager give you his name and phone number and do ask to use his phone to give him a call.

Avalanche44 - make sure when all is back and fixed that you request an extension of your Onstar free period for time you did not have Onstar because radio was being repaired. Best of luck.

I am sure going to call today. The more I think about it the more ticked off I get. It isn't like I am asking for a new AV, I just want a New 6 Disc cd player, just like I have. I have had my truck for one month now. And my AV looks terrible with the hold in the Dash. I do think the lemon law would work for this because, It is a saftey feature. I wanted for my family. And why should we have to look at that hole in the dash. If I went out and bought new stereo my Onstar wouldn't work. Or would it? Thanks for all of this good advice. I will let you know what I can find out.

Well, I went to bring in the av into the dealership this morning and wouldn't you know it...the CD player worked fine. It worked fine the day before too. The temps have been warmer so I don't know if that had something to do with it or not. I told them not to bother with the radio today and I'd wait to bring it in when it's NOT working (shouldn't be long).

Another update on my 6 disc cd player. Well it came in today, and tomorrow they are going to try again. What was funny about the whole thing when I took it in the cd player made a noise in the speakers when it warmed up and the longer it played the louder the noise got. But when They sent it in to be fixed, the whole thing wouldn't even play no radio or no lights on it at all. I really don't understand it. But they did tell me they would make sure I got a new one if this one didn't work. They will have my AV all day because some of the cladding is not flush, they said they had to remove my bumper to fix it and I just go the Gm brush guard on there. I really do appreciate everyones information on my Avalanche.
