Accessory Drive Belt Whine (Reposition Power Steering Pump Pulley) #03-06-01-011 - (Mar 21, 2003)

2001-2003 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban

2002-2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

2001-2003 GMC Sierra, Yukon XL

with 8.1L Engine (VIN G -- RPO L1:cool:

Condition

Some customer may comment on a whining-type noise that is audible in the vehicle's passenger compartment. This noise can typically be heard when the vehicle is idling and may vary in pitch as engine RPM is increased.

Cause

The power steering pump pulley may be positioned too far inboard on the power steering pump.

Correction

Follow all of the current diagnostics in the Service Manual.

If the concern is not resolved, then reposition the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump shaft. Following the applicable Service Manual procedure and using J 25034-C, reposition the pulley outward from the end of the shaft by 1.0 mm (0.040 in.). This will leave the shaft recessed in the pulley.
