8.1 Engine Died While Driving Down The Interstate.

Here you go I have one kinda same problem. One of my 2002 2500 8.1 Avalanches has a ghost or something and it is leading me to follow this thread. I have the same thing! Except each time it happens I get a "reduced engine power" code on the dash. I used to be able to do a manual reset on the ECM and would be good for a week. Now when it goes it is gone for 2-3 hours before I can think of going anywhere in it. The real problem is that the codes that I have pulled are for the cam sensor then the fuel air metering device which is the electric gas peddle (Where's the old throttle cable?) I have replaced all this am getting ready to go out and test drive, but expect to come back under reduced power again!!
Any help here would be greatly appreciated!!

So it is that nasty, huh? D*mn thing is a nightmare!! I've been driving it all morning and no problems, yet.... But am headed to the dealership to get one ASAP!!!
Thank you, ygmn!!
Does anyone know why this affects so many of the systems and causes such freaky stuff?

Over a week now and not one stall problem. CSPS for sure.

Am a happy camper now. Thanks to all! I trust my baby again.

Good deal, glad it worked out. Seems like all the dealers would know exactly what to look for by now, as this is an easily recognized problem!

Combat, it only affects '02, 2500's that is why it is so easy to diagnose. Of course, I am on my 2nd, 02, 2500, and
have not had this problem yet....knock on wood!

Oviedo I thought your blue one had this issue  ???

PS I miss that truck

Nope, although this truck has done t 1X, dumped me in heavy traffic.  Yes, I miss that truck also...it would look great with the Black Gatorback!

I had the same problem in my 93 Cherokee, after about 3 months of having it randomly shut down on me without storing a code it finally did.  Sure enough it was the CPS.  I replaced it and never had the problem again.

Oh they do, they do know about it. I went to El Dorado Motors (Chevrolet) in McKinney Texas. They have hosted several Dallas Avalanche gatherings so I knew to take my baby to them, that they would know better than anyone how to replace the sensor. Very nice staff in their service department. Told the service person that I needed the crankshaft position sensor replaced and he said "having stalling problems huh?" Told him yep and here's the sensor. He said no problem, would be about an hour and a half to replace. I was a bit surprised. He said cost should be around $170.00 for labor. I told him I thought that it would take between two and three hours, around $240.00. He looked at me a bit funny and said, no, we have one mechanic that does this work and he's really good at it. Well of course the service tech called me about two hours later and said, uh you're right I was wrong. I didn't realize you had a big block under the hood.  :B:

So you can tell by the conversation that they most certainly know about the issue. No big deal I guess. I have my truck reliable again and a little less money in my pocket.

I'm really more grateful about all the help in diagnosing the exact problem and saving me a ton of money that this board and its members have done. If I hadn't searched here I might have let some dealer replace all sorts of stuff at thousands in expense and waste.

Guys -

See my thread on this topic.  I just posted a major update regarding this situation.

My 2002 (2500) got same problem 2 weeks now.
Ran on highway 65 miles, then my AV shut down....Many cars behind almost hit. Very scary . I was almost die!
This is very dangerous, why GM don't recall this?
I will post this on channel 6 Florida(Problem Solve) and will sue this GM.
If all of you have same problem, please email channel 6.
Also let me know, so we can work together with my lawyer.
Thank you

Are you in the Orlando area?

Good Morning,
Does anyone have the procedure needed to replace the sensor? Knowing GM it can't be a simple remove and replace thing.

Someone posted how they did it in a thread here somewhere...

check member KGT posts... i think he explained how.... but it can be a PIA since it is prone to breaking off ...

This is why I love this site. I did a little search for engine shutting down and here it all is. Mine just started to act up on Saturday. I thought after our big snow something might have gotten wet under there. The Av got me to work and back home after a stall each way tho. Same stall this morning, but took a little longer to start up. My service engine light came on after a near stall after the restart. I will give the dealer a call and see if I can get the sensor replaced tonite.

Let us know how it works out. Do not let them try to talk you out of this repair,as many of them attempt to do. The vehicle should be performing like it has vapor lock. Sounds like what you have going on. Good luck!

Its exactly like vapor lock once it shuts down. I'm glad I'm not on the highway at all. My ride to work is all local roads.

Yes, and it wil do nothing but continue to get worse. Very dangerous. Get it fixed, and notify the Transportation Safety board, as they are supposedly already looking into this. Thanks

Called our service rep in Detroit (pass problem) and was told that they don't have any problems or recalls on this part. Ofcouse they said take it to the dealer and let them check it out. Trying to see if I can get it in and out today.
