A whining noise coming from tranny of our '02?

Hey all...it has been a while since I last posted...hope all is well with everyone.  Have a quick question regarding our '02 and a whining noise I heard today while towing my 2 place sled trailer.  The gal and I were hauling the trailer to her parents house to store it and the tranny (I believe it is) made a whining noise after taking off from a stop sign about a mile from their house.  The trailer was not loaded and is light, so the tow/haul mode was not needed.  After it did this the first time, I tried to see if it would do it again shortly after, but I could not get it to happen.  It reminded me of a few older Grand Prixs or Luminas that I have heard before with a whining tranny.  We have an extended warranty for the truck, so it may be headed to the dealer for a check up.  Please let me know your thoughts and/or experiences with this or anything I can tell the dealer to assist in diagnosing the issue.

Thanks,
Andy

Depending on noise, might be u-joint.

How difficult is it to replace the U-joints and what is approximate cost for them?  We have warranty, so it may be something I would just do depending upon cost.

U-joints aren't terribly difficult to replace, but it's beneficial to have a torch and a press to do so :)

Well, dropped it off at the dealership today for a Monday morning appointment to check:

1) whinning noise coming from the tranny,
2) u-joints,
3) intermediate steering shaft, and
4) a whinning noise when you turn right or left while in 4 wheel drive.

It will be interesting what they have to say...

Whatever it is I am sure it is expensive!

Update...out of the 4 things I had checked, one was found to be an issue at this time...intermediate steering shaft was replaced.  Talk about a big difference in the steering after it was replaced.

Regarding the others, at least they checked out ok at this point and have been documented for future issues.

I have 03 the whining started like that it got louder as time went on ended up  having to put  bearings in the rearend. mine was out of warr. cost me 662$ I hope this is not your problem  I also had  the stearing shaft replaced now it is making the noise again

I have a whinning noise when in drive or park and more noticable at lower rpms. Does this have anything to do with the steering? Or is it a torque converter or something?

If it does at idle and under power the it could very well be the Fluid Pump on the input shaft of Transmission...

Is that a major concern? I also got a bulletin from gm about the power steering whine, they say to flush it and put valvoline synpower power steering fluid in! I guess i need to get under the rig while someone is hitting the throttle alittle to really see where its comming from.

Umm yea... If its the pump on the trans you could loose the trans at any point... Hopfully its the power steering whine, my truck does it and I've never been able to get rid of it. I knows its not the transmission pump because i have a 6-Spd Manual... hehe

Oh, man! How did you manage to get a 6-speed manual? I'm super jealous!

There is a whole right up on the conversion in the Performance Drivetrain section...
