Adding the heated wheel from 2012 LTZ

I thought I would add my experience with this mod in hopes it would others.

I just successfully added the heated steering wheel to my 2007 LT. I used the part numbers provided above and ordered directly from my local dealer. I was fortunate to get the parts for wholesale prices.

Heated Wheel - $236.84
Coil - $131.58
Harness - $87.63

First off, let me recommend the videos by autowoods as they are very useful when removing the airbag and wheel. (I added the spoke covers from them to my new wheel). I also recommend reviewing the following thread for swapping out the coil.
http://chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,115219.0.html

Once I got the wheel and coil off and started changing out the harness, I noticed the green plug needed to supply power to the heated was already present on my current harness. Also, there was a plug that was different on the new harness. It was for a small orange harness with two wires that runs up the shifter arm, so I assume it was for the tow/haul button. Given this I could not use the new harness and focussed on using the existing green plug on my old harness. It did not have power even though there is a designation and 10 amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood. However, there is not a pin present in the plug where the main harness plugs in to supply it power.

I ended up finding ignition power in the main junction box under the dash and tying this into my existing harness (brown wire from green plug) to supply power to the needed green plug for the heated wheel. It did the trick and I now have a working heated wheel. For any others with the same model year as I looking to attempt this mod, look under your dash midway down the existing harness to see if the small green plug is present. If so, save yourself the cost of the harness. For anyone still needing the harness, I have a new one sitting in a box looking for a new home, so drop me a pm if interested.

2011avalanche did you buy the exact wheel from gmpartdirect? #20998064
Seems cheap for a heated steering wheel.

Does anyone know what the part number is for a heated steering wheel in light titanium (assuming it exists).  I changed the part numbers slightly and was able to find a couple more steering wheels, but I can't tell what color they are (I might just be a little slow....).  Thanks

I'm thinking it might be 20998066, as it is the third in numerical order and the titanium seems to always come up last in other parts.  Can anyone verify?  I'm really looking forward to adding this to my 2007 LTZ.  thanks

First off looks great I need to buy this for my dad so he'll stop bitching. But I was looking at after market ones for the first gen and i couldn't find any maybe take the new steering wheel and hook it up somehow.

Would this mod work using the Denali steering wheel which has the wood trim? Would the harnesses match up the same? I think the wood grain looks much nicer much like the Escalade steering wheel. I would probably upgrade all the wood grain trim to the darker wood like in the Denali. For some reason I think it's more sophisticated.

This guy put it in his Sierra. I feel sure it would work in the Avalanche. Obviously the Chevy airbag would stay so it wouldn't say GMC.

It would, but the wood grain is a different color in the GMC. I was actually very close to buying a '13 Seirra Denali, but in the end, the black diamond won out (even though it was a little more expensive). I prefered the touch of the avy leather wheel vs the wood on the denali especially after about 10 minutes of driving. I must say that awd SD is a rocket sled, but premium gas with 6.2L's MPG, and the fact it could not fit in my garage pushed me back to the Avy. The interior is pretty much the same except for the wheel...

where did you get the power for the heated steering wheel install? i installed the harness and coil and the steering wheel but the heated button did not come on when pressed was it because i did not have the air bag back on help :help:

Hello,
First, let me say that this is an awesome mod.
Next, i was wondering if anyone has ordered the parts from gmpartsdirect?  Someone over on gm-trucks, ordered the heated wheel (20998064) and it wasn't heated.  I mainly want to get it there because it's quite a bit cheaper there than other places.
I emailed gmpartsdirect to confirm that it's the heated wheel but they can't confirm it is without me giving them the VIN of a vehicle that has the heated wheel.
So i was wondering if someone could either confirm that they purchased this from gmpartsdirect, or they know of somewhere else cheap to get the wheel, or if someone had the VIN of a vehicle with a heated wheel.
Here's the link to the gm-trucks forum:  http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/105656-heated-steering-wheel-install-in-gmt-900-sierra/page-4
Thanks,

George

I installed this today in my 2008 LTZ. I got the wheel from GMpartsdirect, the part number for the wheel has changed to 22947767. I also replaced the clockspring and the harness, and the power to the wheel didn't come on. I ran a jumper from the brown wire to an open lug in the fuse block just the the right of the brake, and bingo!  Heat! Save your money and don't swap the harness, just connect the brown to power and the black to ground.

Thanks! I will have to give that a try. I haven't looked at it since I installed it and it didn't work.
If you don't have it put back together yet, any chance you can take some pics?

I don't think so, it was the part number that I've seen in all the other threads on this subject, it had the right connectors, just didn't power up. Nobody seemed to have an answer to why, as a few people had the same problem, so I figured I'd just find power on the fuseblock.

Hello

I am going to perform this upgrade to my 2011 Avalanche and my wife's 2009 Tahoe

I am debating whether to buy the harness or the connector from ssconnectors part 60296271

I attempted to check via the web for the information for ssconnectors to no avail

Ideas on how to contact ssconnectors??

Thanks

Mike

Hey everyone,
So I did this mod, got the wheel and clock spring installed, used the new harness and went to connect it all, my steering wheel has a four pin connector and the clock spring only has a 2 pin.  Did I get the wrong wheel?  Or is there a pigtail needed to make the connection?
