Well after about 90 days of trial and error I finally got TPMS installed in my 03 Avalanche and my Grandson-in-laws 04 Avalanche. I am going to break this down into two different posts, the first for the 04, and the second for the additional steps you have to go through to install on the 03. Here goes:

The first thing I would like to do is acknowledge the help and input I received from several people who made the a little easier. First Ed (teksavy) who we all know as the Cubby Cam Guy. Ed is first and only one I know of who got this to work on his 03. Second? would be Jason ( Prime Power) and the guys at AAE. I got a new Cluster from them and I have to say have GREAT customer service. Third would be ?sperry? for his input and the great CAFCNA Tech Center especially the ?Tire Pressure monitor (TPM) Info? section which is a MUST read before you attempt any of this. The last guy I want to thank is Ed Schaffer, Owner of Northtown Auto Clinic. He provided the use of his facility in North Kansas City, Missouri, and also had the programming software to reprogram the BCM that has to be done in the 03 Avalanche. Even though he is a big Volvo guy they work on anything has an outstanding auto repair facility. Any one in the Kansas City area could not go wrong having work done there.

If anyone wants to do this and has questions that aren?t answered here please ask and I will try to answer. I also ended up with a few extra sensors and PDM modules if anyone needs some parts.

Adding TPMS on 04 Avalanche (05 should be the same)

Parts you will need:
4 TPMS sensors (one for each wheel) 04 part # 15136883? -? 05 part # 15114379
Note the 04 part # will work on the 05 but the 05 part # will not work on the 04 it will read ? the pressure.

A instrument cluster that has been programmed to display TPMS if you want to read you tire pressure in your DIC. Also you will need steering wheel controls of the DIC.

The TPMS will work without the DIC functions and will still light up the warning on the cluster when you have a low tire, it just won?t display on the DIC.

The first thing to do is install the Tire pressure monitors in each of the wheels. Next you can either replace the PDM ( Passenger Door Module) with one that has had TPMS turned on or turn your existing PDM on with a tech 2 scanner. Whey you turn on TPMS with a tech 2 it can?t be turned off. The PDM will default to 30 LB tire pressure and will warn you if a drop of more than 2LB.

The next step is to learn the location of the Sensors. Make sure the vehicle has been driven for at least a mile above 20 MPH after the sensors were installed. If you drive the vehicle after you have turned on the PDM and before you have performed the learn procedure you should see ?Check Tire Monitor? warning on the DIC. This is not a problem as it will go away as soon as you learn the sensor location.
You got into the learn mode by turning the ignition switch to the on position, set the park break and toggle you headlight switch on and off 4 times within 4 seconds, your horn should beep. Go to the Right Front tire and let 2+ LB of air out, you horn should beep, do the same to the other three tires in this order RF ? LF ? LR ? RR . The horn should beep as it learns the location of each sensor. When complete turn off the ignition.

Take the vehicle out and drive for about a mile which will update TPMS tire pressure readings.

If you DIC has been programmed to read tire pressure you should now be able to read the tire pressure from the DIC. If it has not the tire symbol with the ! in the middle will still show up if you get a low tire.

As I said the Cluster has to be programmed with a VIN from a vehicle that had TPMS installed for you to be able to get TPMS info in the DIC. I programmed both the 03 and 04 that I did with a VIN from an 04 Yukon Denali and it works with any problems. The cluster I have is an 06 SS that I got from Jason ( Prime Power) and an 05 SS that I already had. I would think that you could reprogram a stock cluster as well but why would you want to when you can get one of these great looking clusters from Jason.

Additional steps for an 03

You can also do the same install in the 03 as I described in the 04 but because the BCM ( Body Control Module)? does not have the ability to put the vehicle into learn mode you have to replace the BCM (you may be able to reprogram your existing BCM but I installed one from an 06 and reprogrammed it) and reprogram it using an 04 or 05 VIN. The BCM that I used was Part# 10367690 and is used in a lot of GM800 vehicles from 04 to 06. If you don?t want to go that far you can take the PDM out of you 03, put it into a vehicle that has TPMS? parked beside you and put that vehicle into the Learn mode. Once the PDM has learned the sensors put it back into the 03 and you are done. Ed (teksavy) was the first one that I know of to do this. The only draw back to that is if you want to rotate your tires and want the DIC to display the tire pressure location correctly you have to get you buddy?s vehicle back and perform the Learn procedure again. If you did not have your DIC programmed to read TPMS you will still get the ?Check tire pressure? warning at start up and the tire symbol with the !? in the middle will show up on the cluster. So if you Cluster is not programmed to display TPMS, not a bad way to go because you are going to have to inspect each tire anyway.

If anyone with an 03 AV is interested in doing this please ask questions and I will try to answer them and get into more detail.

I've seen two different part numbers for 04 and was wondering if both will work.? They are both the blue sensors, #15136883 and? #15102575.?

Anybody??

The 15102575 was replaced with the #1136883. They both should work but the 883 is the latest.
