Adding two way remote start OEM functionality to factory remote start?

If you want to upgrade the OnStar and get free RemoteLink app, you'll need the VCIM from a 2011. I've detailed it all out in this post

If you have a 2011 or newer VCIM installed in your truck you should try seeing what Onstar see's it as. You should be able to get 3 years of free onstar app service which will remote start your car and do the 2 way communications out of the box.

I just got confirmation from someone else that nothing databus wise changed from 2007 - 2014.  So if someone installs a 2011-2014 VCIM into their 2007-2010 truck they will pick up the ability of the free 3 year onstar app.  Assuming the previous owner of the VCIM didn't already have it...  Onstar will see the VIN as programmed in the VCIM and NOT the VIN in the truck if it works the same way as the one in the CTS.  Would be interesting if anyone wants to try this.

With the CTS it connected to the older cellular antennae fine but if you wanted the GPS to work too you needed to grab the associated antennae for the VCIM too.

Would be interesting if anyone wanted to attempt this. I do have the wire diagrams for up through 2009 if anyone is interested in this modification.

As mentioned already you want to look at the features the original truck had and try matching them up or atleast make sure the minimum it had is same as your truck. For instance if your vehicle and donor vehicle have remote start. If you have blue tooth and the new unit doesn't you will loose that. But looks like you pick it up if the new one has it and yours didn't. MAY be the case for remote start as well.

I have an '03 so this won't do anything for me but I can look up the wiring and location of the VCIM if anyone is interested in trying this potential upgrade. Then you use your phone as the 2 way communicator. Note do NOT contact GM with questions about this because they will deny it will work...  You may also get a free 3 month onstar subscription since they will think you are the new owner of a truck...

The VCIM I got came new from the dealership using a newer trucks vin. I don't recall what year it came from as it's been several years since I did this. If I were to guess I'd say it came from like a 2010 or which ever model year first offered Bluetooth. On star has been disabled since I swapped them out (known side effect) which I'm sure I could get corrected if I cared about having it.
