AFM....How long have you ran your Avalanche with it?

I'm curious how many people don't worry about the AFM system and just put it in "D" and go?? and has it ever gave you trouble?
Mine seems to work fine with no vibrations or weird shifting,

Disabled mine electronically at ~130,000, but ran fine before/after. I do lose about 1 quart of oil every 2,500 miles though which I attribute mainly to the AFM lifters, but that's just a guess.

Doubt you will get much info since well been a long time since production ended and lots of members do not post much.

Best if you read the PROBLEMS engine section for all the engine issues 2007+ owners have had due to AFM.
some got new engines.

Yea, I read it all that's why I started using M5 until I can buy a device to stop it... Just wondered if it was a big problem or just a problem talked about when something happens
What I mean is...people don't talk about non-problems much...it's the trouble they like to discuss

I have been saying for years when new site members worry about buying an AV because they constantly read the Problems section, I encourage them to understand what you mentioned above. Most AV owners aren't a member in general, then the ones who join a website are looking for solutions to a problem and they can be very vocal and start several threads for the same issue so it inflates the true percentage of owners who have that problem.
You are right in that most members don't post threads like "drove my AV today and nothing bad happened!"
What you can read are threads like If you had it to do again would you buy an AV, or high mileage club threads or the usually yearly thread about rumors of a third gen AV coming out due to popular demand etc.
To answer your question, I have a 2008 and it doesn't have the six-speed transmission or any programing or device to deactivate AFM and if my luck holds out I am not burning any oil. I drive it like an old man and get regular maintenance to maintain and watch out for future problems.

YEs... but with AFM... the damage is severe and a programmer to turn off is so cheap relative to a new motor...

and what real benefit do you get from AFM... maybe 1 mpg better on highway?
Doubt it helps much in City...

Did they not learn about this back when they called it DOD DIsplacement on Demand.... was garbage then too.

Issue is the lifter is powered by engine oil which is fine when clean but it gets dirty. pressure changes, Lifter gets sticky...
Just something I would take care of first if I had that in my truck.

Just read to yesterday day a member tearing apart his engine since it started to run bad and then give misfires and all sorts of grief.

the dreaded PO307 and stabilitrak issues on my 2008 | Chevy Avalanche Fan Club of North America

Another I just read now:
I have white exhaust smoke | Chevy Avalanche Fan Club of North America

I dunno... AFM scares me a lot since it is a design thing.... and nothing you can do but delete it.

Yea, it seems a good preventive measure to just shut it off.... At 95,000 on mine, preventive is key to longevity since whoever was the previous owners, probably used the AFM, and changed the oil at 5000miles intervals.
Any recommendations for a good oil that I'll change every 3-4000 miles?

Seeing as the search button is not working right now.....
I keep seeing posts about AFM, what is it?

Search is not working?
Works for me.

It turns your engine into a V4 for fuel economy but has some inherent problems
That’s what I thought, but I thought it was called ACM-Active Cylinder Management.

So what’s the work around?

Active Fuel Management

I have a 2010 with 235000k miles on my Avy and I haven't had any problems with the AFM system, I only noticed it kicking in when I was on the expressway and it worked great, the only thing I didn't like about it was the sound of my exhaust, I have a flowmaster 40 on it and it would sound a little muffled. I just recently disabled it and put a pretty good tune in the computer. I have a Diablo Predator 2 and I'm running a 93 octane tune.

I have a 2013 AV with AFM and Plan to delete it. After reading a good bit of info on the subject it sounds to me like the best thing to do is shut if off. If anyone has a different opinion I would like to here it. Thanks Jess

I'm a master certified mechanic and I've worked on these systems for quite a while. I've found that the only people who are having problems with the AFM are the ones that don't change their oil regularly. I change my oil every 7k miles and I use full synthetic, I have 235k miles on it and it purrs like a kitten.

I've had my DIC in Instant Eco since day one and in about 2500 miles mine ALWAYS said "V8". I never saw it go to "V4" or does that even mean anything? I'm not sure if the previous owner deleted it and I'm not sure if it just always says "V8" regardless.

My previous three Avys didn't have AFM.

Might be disabled, as you note. I think the motor and trans need to be up to operating temp, then try cruise control around 35-40mph on flat ground. This is when I would see it kick over to V4 mode. It would rarely, if ever, kick over to V4 at highway speed for me.

Cylinder deactivation may be inhibited for many reasons including the following:
• Engine coolant temperature out of range for cylinder activation
• Engine vacuum out of range
• Brake booster vacuum out of range
• Transmission gear incorrect or shift in progress
• Accelerator pedal out of range or rate of pedal application to fast
• Engine oil pressure and temperature out of range
• Engine speed out of range
• Vehicle speed out of range
• Minimum time in V8 mode not met
• Maximum V4 mode time exceeded
• Decel fuel cutoff active
• Reduced engine power active
• Torque management active
• Catalytic converter over temperature protection active
• Piston protection active, knock detected
• Cylinder deactivation solenoid driver circuit faults

TBH, for my type of driving I may just not be a candidate. I get in operating temp all the time but I'm either in stop/go or blowing down the interstate at 70+. I use my cruise at times but it's always 65 and above. I live in mid TN and me, wife and kids went on a hike a week or two ago and it was about 100ish miles each way but 84 of them were interstate heading to east TN in the hills at interstate speeds.

I've put close to 70k miles on my '07 5.3 LT since I got it in 2016 (my truck now has 140k miles on it.) I always change my oil when the DIC says I'm down to 25% oil life, which usually equates to around 6k miles. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 exclusively, and only lose around 1qt between changes. AFM has been active on my truck since I've owned it, but I would drive around town with the gear selector in "3" instead of "D" to keep the AFM from activating. On the highway I would always use "D" and it would cycle in and out of 4cyl mode. I finally got myself a tuner for Christmas that allowed me to disable the AFM. Now I can drive around in "D" all the time and the AFM never activates. Gives me peace of mind and keeps the Flowmaster 40 series sounding great.

I also flashed an 87 octane performance tune on my truck, which has totally changed the driving experience for the better. (y)

What tuner did you go with?

What tuner did you go with?
I used the Diablo Predator 2 on mine, it was about $395.00 with tax and all. I've been playing with it for a couple of weeks and it's Great. There is so much you can do with it, I'm still working on getting the perfect setup and I'll post on here what I think others might want to do with their own tunner. We have a few people on here that have the same tunner as mine. That's why I went with the Diablo Predator 2 and the reviews on it were better than any other one that I looked at.

Same - DiabloSport Predator 2 Model 7202. Got it for $325 at Christmas. I agree with Crunch - there's lots you can do with it. I was skeptical at first that it would make much of a difference - my main focus was disabling the AFM - but after putting the tune on my truck I was pleasantly surprised. It is noticeably more responsive to throttle input and the shift point changes work really well. I used to have to bury my foot into the accelerator to get Bruce to move, and then I would get the 2 gear downshift which would send the RPMs screaming, but now it downshifts right when I expect it to. It's much more drivable. Don't know why I waited so long to get one.

What year Avi’s are you guys driving?

I’m completely new to the whole tuner game, so I’ve got some reading up to do.
