I recently took delivery of my new Av (2002 model) and wish to upgrade the audio system with aftermarket components (am/fm/cd/mp3 head unit, xm satellite and changeout speakers). I purchased the vehicle with the standard am-fm-cd with ONSTAR. I have been to 8 or 9 audio installation shops as well as the delivering Chevy dealership and I am being given various explanations ranging from "we wont even touch a vehicle with onstar" to its a simple install.

I would like to list some of the issues below that I would like to clarify before proceeding with the project. I would be greatly indebted to anyone wishing to comment on the issues listed.

1 THE INTERFACE - some dealers would not even touch the installation. Some told me that the original radio would have to be mounted under the dash somewhere with additional auxillary speakers even with the onstar interface module to make onstar function properly. I got prices for the module ranging from $100 to $150. I assume that the module made by PAC which retails for $99 in most catalogs is the only one made. One dealer said he had some type of "plug" for $14.95 to accomplish the interface. I found this one hard to believe, can anyone explain how the module works.

2. ONSTAR - a couple of dealers said I would have to select a head unit that had an auxillary mode because I would have to toggle over to AUX to call Onstar or use the personal calling function once the interface is wired in. In this case what would happen if the vehicle was involved in an accident and the airbags deployed before the driver had the opportunity to toggle to AUX? Would the system still dial out to onstar to notify of the deployment?

3. INTEGRATION - Couple of the dealers plus the service manager at the delivering dealship said there is a separate data line running into the radio that controls the various chimes (warning for lights on, etc...) Does the interface module take care of this? or will I lose these features? Another dealer said my keyless remote and the factory car security will not function if I remove the factory radio? Anyone with answers, please comment.

Thank you all for your patience in reading all this material.I realize that it is lengthy as I have become very frustrated so far in my research of this project. I am relying on all you kind, fellow owners for some good advice. Any information that you provide to enable me to go forward with the project and further enjoy my new Av will be greatly appreciated :)

Welcome to the club! We are here to help!

1 THE INTERFACE - some dealers would not even touch the installation. ?Some told me that the original radio would have to be mounted under the dash somewhere with additional auxillary speakers even with the onstar interface module to make onstar function properly. ?I got prices for the module ranging from $100 to $150. ?I assume that the module made by PAC which retails for $99 in most catalogs is the only one made. ?One dealer said he had some type of "plug" for $14.95 to accomplish the interface. ?I found this one hard to believe, can anyone explain how the module works.

You won't need to keep the existing radio. What you will need to do is buy the OS-1 adapter made by PAC. You can get it from one of our sponsors www.jpcustoms.com

You will only need to add additional speakers for onstar if you will be adding an aftermarket amp. let us know.

2. ONSTAR - a couple of dealers said I would have to select a head unit that had an auxillary mode because I would have to toggle over to AUX to call Onstar or use the personal calling function once the interface is wired in. ?In this case what would happen if the vehicle was involved in an accident and the airbags deployed before the driver had the opportunity to toggle to AUX? ?Would the system still dial out to onstar to notify of the deployment?

Again, pure BS. As long as your headunit has a mute wire, the onstar voice will either play through the existing speakers if you don't use an aftermarket amp or through 2 small additional speakers you will need to install if you add an aftermarket amp.

3. INTEGRATION - Couple of the dealers plus the service manager at the delivering dealship said there is a separate data line running into the radio that controls the various chimes (warning for lights on, etc...) Does the interface module take care of this? or will I lose these features? ?Another dealer said my keyless remote and the ?factory car security will not function if I remove the factory radio? ?Anyone with answers, please comment.

not on your vehicle. I am aware of this with "bose" systems on the '03's and some '02's but does not apply to yours.

Several of us including myself have gutted the factory system WITH Onstar and have not lost any functionality.

Let us know if you have other questions and Good Luck!

Thanks carrerarod, you've put my mind at ease!

I do have one more question though, I would like an opinion on the optimal mount for the XM antenna. From what I can gather, there is a small unit made by Terk that looks like a computer mouse that attaches to the roof with adhesive back near the 3rd brake light. My question is how is that cladding that surrounds the 3rd brake light removed? Is there a special star wrench available from the dealer to remove it? Or is it a standard wrench available from any automotive parts source?

Thanks for the help.

No problem. I've heard many stories of shops just breaking down not knwoing how to deal with onstar. I think besides all the questions about subwoofers in our trucks, the onstar issue ranks a close second.

I believe all the cladding up there uses Torx bits. Not sure what size. If you do a search in the accessories forum for the "spoiler" thread, they go through a pretty good explanantion on how to get in there.

Good Luck!

The PAC piece makes the install a really easy task. ? I had the soundgate piece in my truck at first ?but the soundgate piece works on audio signal so you not only have to tap into the wiring you have the unit acting a bit out of the norm at times.

I installed the pac os-1 ?from JP customs.com ?it is simple plug and play. ?And if you dont want to mount any permanent speakers like Crod or others have done ? I used two enclosed cellular speakers one inback of the console on the drivers side and another between the drivers seat and the console pointing up for maximum sound. ?you would never know that you didnt have the stock radio in it when you use it. ? The Soundgate piece did work but it was a far greater task to install and to get rid of engine noise and false triggers.

Thanks to Jason for my OS-1 controller

OK, maybe it's a dumb question, but...

With the PAC OS-1 and external speakers, how do you control the OnStar volume? Normally it's with the radio volume control, but if the signal no longer goes through the radio... ???

Simple my friend....the OS-1 has a volume adjustment for each channel...a small pot you turn!

So when it's installed, I'm guessing that pot is behind the dash, and you can't adjust it later (like while on the road.) I take it you just adjust it to a reasonable level, and hope it's not too loud/soft when you go to actually use it.

Or am I still missing somehting? ???

When you install the OS-1 you set the listening volume for the Onstar. When onstar is activated, the radio cuts off, and the Onstar is the only thing heard. When I did this install, I bought 2 speakers separate from the sound system and installed them just for Onstar. Onstar comming on is not like music. It is a set volume. Mine, at least, does not need to be adjusted. The volume I chose when I did the install is just fine, and the volume knob is located on the box (behind the dash)

So, to answer your question....you can not adjust the pot, because it is hidden.

Whewwww

hey guys!

the upgrade is done, the project is a big success, thanks for all of your help and advice. it's kind of scary how many un-informed people are working out there in the audio shops.

i put in an Alpine 7893 HU, Alpine XM receiver and 4 x 6.5" MB Quart DKD 116's and the system sounds great. 500 % improvement over the factory setup. the onstar integration went flawless, all the functions (chimes, etc. still function)

ZIMM - i almost tackled it myself but i got cold feet at the last moment. i saw Rex at Doc's and he would not even touch onstar. finally found a place in n-castle worthy of modding the av. only problem is they did not handle pioneer  so i settled for alpine, it's awesome!

thanks again guys

I cannot believe Rex won't work with Onstar. He's gonna go outa business if he won't learn to mod with Onstar. GM DELCO stuff has been his specialties along with Pionner & Alpine.
Sorry about that. I had faith in him...
