Aftermarket stereo systems

Putting one together now as a matter of fact.

Alpine 9827 (new 2004 HU - replacing the 9807)
Rockford Fosgate 501bd Amp
JL Audio 6w0's x 4 in custom sub box
Rockford Fosgate 4 gauge Wiring Kit

Keeping Stock Door Speakers for now...eventually changing them out for components in front and rear.

BigKahuna, check this portion of the forum out: titled "Chevy Avalanche Audio/Video and Electronics" There's alot of audio/stereo info there!

Under the seat....enough room for that amp....and then maybe an additional one for the door speakers. The "4 Banger" with JL Audio's fits perfectly behind the rear seat. Nothing is hooked up yet, but I heard they produce some nice bass....not the rattle your truck to peices, but still some nice loud QUALITY bass.

did not even see this section :E:

getting the itch to do a system up again, been 12 years since I had one!!!!!!!!! but, it will be a while before, thinking about doing one using the stock head unit, I have gotten to like the stock head units!!!!!!!!!
will have to look into it.

BigKahuna,

I feel the same way about my Factory Head Unit...I want to put in a system using my stock unit...I talked to a few members about it, and you would be surprised how many members have nice systems and use the stock unit! (y)

;D I thinik I would be one of them.

I also like the stock head unit becuase it matches the interior very nicely and i think it sounds fine!

I went with the pioneer 4 ways for the front doors with a single 150 watt amp for both! I left the rear doors completely stock.

I have two pick-up truck sub boxes with 8" subs and horn midrange and liquid cooled tweeters.

each is additionally powered by 150 watt amps and it rocks.

Took it into a local stereo store for the door speaker install and they were very impressed with the sound and volume. I did it all for under $600. ;D ;D

Hi BigKahuna, welcome to the club!

Keeping the stock head unit is no problem at all with the use of a line output converter, so that you'll have RCA outputs from the deck to input into your amps. People will start the usual "aftermarket sounds better", but that is an unfounded claim and keeping the factory head unit can save you money in two ways, since you'll save the cost of a new deck and not need various interfaces and adapters.

I would personally replace the front door speakers first; the replacements picked will depend upon your goals and uses. For a good upgrade that will vastly improve your daily driving experience without breaking the bank, just put in a set of high quality coaxials. You could spend more and put in components, but with the tweeter right beside the woofer, you'd basically have a coaxial anyway, just at a higher cost and install rate. If you like to experiment for the best image, the separate set would allow you to move the tweeter around, being the only true advantage.

You'll find sub boxes of all sorts on the pages of this forum. We've had everything from simple boxes that will hold a single 8" sub under the seat to midgates with enclosures built into them. Look around and see what you can find. It will all depend upon your needs, once again. If you haul large loads and use the gate a lot, the midgate enclosure wouldn't be a good option, and you may get sick of having to relocate an under-seat box for the conversion. If that's the case, a JL Stealthbox may be what you need, if you don't mind losing some center console storage space.

Tell us what you want and how you use your truck, and you'll get plenty of info in no time.

in my past life I was an installer so will do it all myself..

Not up to date on all the equipment but always had good luck with MB Quart components, may go with a set of their CoAx's in the front doors. Have not looked at the box situation yet. It will be a while before I do anything...
