Are the K&N FIPK and such really better than the stock (for Z 71 at least) High Flow filter???
Who's getting a REAL performance gain with their filter and with which one???
Thanks ;D (y)

You will get so many differant opinions on this that the confusion level will rise to new heights. I didn't care if I got a performance increase or not. The stock air tube looks like feces on the engine and I wanted something that looked better and sounded tough when stepping on it. I went with UPD and K&N filter. I am not totally satisfied with the Air Box, since it will no longer sit in the stock mounts, but it really doesn't hurt anything. Just go with what makes you feel good. I know I went off topic with the FIPK but its early and I am just rambling.

That's actually the type of replies I am looking for. I am very new to this Forum and to the Avalanche (picking it up today, I hope.)
I only mentioned FIPK cuz that was one I knew...any of the "air improvers" info would be great.
Thanks

I have the K&N and the UPD FIPK. I did not really notice much if any improvement. But I still feel it is worth the investment. I added the K&N the day I picked up the truck so it only had 8 miles when I made the change. I did not get a chance to compare the before/after mods. I also changed the exhaust the same day. Flowmaster 40 series.

I have the same set up K&N/UPD FIPK and I do notice a slight increase in performance and functionality, plus I like the look under the hood.

It roars under the hood and I believe it has added to my increase in overall MPG (on top of my other mods - Flowmaster 40, Hypertech III, TBS).

Not wanting to be left out of the gas engine market, Gale Banks has "PowerPack" systems, consisting of air filter, headers, and full exhaust system. Here is a link to the Dyno Comparison. The charts have info on the 5.3L and 6L so read it carefully!

Anyone have the part number for the K&N drop in filter?

S\G
It is
33-2129

Steelheadchaser,,,

Nice link to the Banks stuff!!!

I do get scared when there are no advertised prices though! And with the Banks name, it's probably no cheap...

The exhaust system looks so much like the GIBSON 3" Single swept side system it's scary...

I know the Gibson makes 10 HP from 800 to 3650 Rpm, and above that, it falls back to stock... They flow just enough to give the low and mid a peak...

I had a pretty healthy post last night about exhaust and my findings:

Exhaust

If you haven't seen it yet... Looks maybe like mr Banks might be following the Gibson analogy... who knows

I racked my brain for over a week, and settled on a system that flows a little more cfm than the gibson... The Flowmaster Force II with 70 series...

Plus I love the sound of the FMs to boot... I probably would have gotten the Gibson single if it didn't sound so much like a Euro raspy V6 Exhaust... :)

11H, do you have a link to a site that compares the various mufflers flow rates in cfm?

I got the volant, haven't noticed a improvement in HP, but did get my milage uot 17.5mpg...plus the fiber carbon is pretty cool also >:D

I don't know if it's because I'm trying to convince myself but today I installed my Volant and I think it kicks ASSperation besides there logo matches the Vortec logo, I'm very happy. It sounds a little louder but I dont mind it.

A few days ago irontrain asked for the K&N drop-in replacement filter - The correct number is 33-2135. 33-2129 will work - the length & width dimensions are correct; however, the depth is shallower than the stock filter. My local parts store had a K&N catalog that allowed cross referencing the AC Delco number to the replacement. Its 33-2135.

The K & N website lists the 33-2135 as the replacement for the 6L and 8.1L, and the 33-2129 asthe replacement for the 5.3L. Irontrains sig shows a 5.3L engine.

K&N Application Chart

personally, i think the K&N intake doesnt do anything.
the filters are good though.

i have the UPD. I DO SEE A DIFFERENCE.

The Volant is also a good choice. I like the way they have the filter cone setup.

The best overrall choices for the AV I believe is the UPD & Volant.

I know both you will see a difference, but remember you need a lil more added to see a real difference....headers, exhaust, hypertech. Then your really talking. ;D

Could this be why they call the Z71 high flow
they substituted the bigger filter from the 8.1 and maybe K&N didn't catch that??

Intersting the K&N shows different filters for the 2 engines where in the 02 Avalanche owners manual they show the same filter for both. A1518C

If that's the case I wonder what the high flow Z71 filter really is?

And also wonder if we would be better off putting the K&N 33-2135 in. ?In fact I just checked the K&N application chart for the A1518C and it shows the 33-2135 as the match for it.

When I got out later I'll have to see what filter is actually in my Z71 Av.

I checked and the so called "High Flow" filter on my Z71 is the A1518C that is listed in owners manual as a standard replacement.

11H,

I am considerring a flowmaster exhaust for my 02 av and wondered how loud the exhaust is from inside the cab, at idle, cruising, and under acceleration. I had a flowmaster set up on my 5.7l Tahoe and I loved the sound, but I wouldn't have taken it on a long trip with anyone in the shotgun seat! Very loud inside the Tahoe!

What's your opinion of your noise level?

Thanks,

Bear

The noise level is all dependant on what series you get...
I love my 40 series, but it let's out a hefty growl during acceleration. I know many are happy with 50 series. And then they have even quiter ones - 60 & 70 series. You can be as loud as you want to be >:D

BEAR the 40 can be heard inside....hard to describe but it can be heard when mashing throttle...once you settle on speed it quiets out......

If worried find a local avy with the change....if not possible I would find a shop...let them cut out stock...fit up 40 series and let you jump in and run engine...it will be louder but you can get a feel for sound.....

PS it does sound fast with the 40 series....

Thanks zimmsAV and ygmn,

I'll try to hook up with a local member and listen to them.

Bear

I have the K&N stock filter replacement, after changeing to this filter and checking mileage it came to 3.5 more MPG
On the Delaware run my mpg worked out to 22.1 mpg thats driving with cruise control and air averaging 65 mph or 1900 rpm ;D ;D

I think you may be right. It doesn't make much sense to carry two part numbers when one will cover all the applications.
