..with the midgate down (coming back home from Home Depot), I'd have to have my boy (age 7) in the front seat. I know there is an airbag on/off sensor in the seat but is there any way of bypassing (or shutting off) the airbag when kids are riding in front?

Also, is the airbag sensor new or do previous AV's have them as well?

As far as I know there is no way to turn it off like the Siverado has. However, it is supposed to "sense" depending on weight if it should be on or not.

Also, if say a young child is sitting there and the airbags decide to turn on it is suposed to then decide, depending on weight, if it will deploy at full force or something less.

Sounds like a good system but it does require you to trust that it knows your 7 year old doesn't require a full blow out during a 14 mph front end hit. Good Luck! :B:

No, the '02 does not have a way to turn off the passanger air bag.

Well,

I found a way of turning mine off on the 2003! I just don't take the mother-in-law in the AV! ;D

Sorry! I had to say it!!!

I know it is a serious question and I don't let the granddaughter ride in the front because I haven't figured a way around the issue. At least the previous truck I had,, the D****has a way to disable the passenger side air bag.

dirtdevil, I hope you find a suitable answer to your situation with the airbag. Perhaps a call to you dealer may ease your concerns about having your lad up front.

One thing I have been pondering, is whether with the bench front seat, and if child were sitting in the center, what impact might that child receive if the driver and/or passenger airbag were to deploy?

Grandpa, that's also why I'm trying to get a bench seat with the PDA package but they tell me it's not possible.

Does anyone know if there is a fuse for just the passenger side airbag?

AVA_Grandpa,
Stated in Manual - not recommended for children be in front/bench seat, This includes child seats.

DirtDevil-
Side Airbag or Front air bag?
There's a fuse but, it for everything. Last time I looked.

On the '04s I think it's set at 100lbs.

Someone sitting there lifted himself slightly up and it went to off. He was about 150.

I e-mailed Chevy customer service and they responded that "there is no manual disconnect for the passenger airbag". I mentioned that I could probably load lumber and plywood sheets with the tailgate down, but I'm concerned with the reports of the cables breaking...they said that the tailgate cables are designed for only "moderate" loads (whatever that means).

They also mentioned that Chevy will be coming out with a Silverado 1500 Crew cab later this year, this might be the best solution for my needs.

It's too bad, I really like the AV but I'm not willing to risk my kids' safety by relying on only a sensor. :cautious:

RENORCR, thank-you for your note. It's causing me to re-read that entire section of the owner's manual.
