All gauges off, no acceleration

Ahhh, help! After work on Friday all of the lights in the dash came on (check engine, seatbelt, brake, etc.) then rapidly shut down. :E: Then all of my gauges went dead, including the mileage meter. The acceleration is effected by this as well. It is very hesitant through first gear. Periodically, the gauges will come back on and the truck accelerates fine, then they go back off and I am crawling at a snails pace. I have the Avy down at the local GM repair place but I would like to get an idea of what it might be. Any help will be welcomed :C:

I've had this problem, I believe it was the ignition switch going bad...a common problem. The reason for the acceleration problem, I was told, is that the CPU reverts to 3rd gear so you won't get stuck in 1st and burn out the transmission trying to get back to the dealer.

Good luck!

BTW - when mine did it, it acted funny a couple of times (briefly) for a day or two beforehand, I could shut it off and restart and things would be OK, then one day it just became consistent.

OMG. That is great. That is what my dad said too! He said it should only cost about $300.00 to fix. Would you believe I am 1000 miles out of my warranty :8: Thank you so, so much.

Yep, mine was just like that too.

If you have a good dealer, I think you could talk them into covering it under warranty anyway. (y)

I tried. They all said because I am not the original owner, they will not warranty it :3: Bummer...

This fool at the GM shop is trying to tell me that they are getting codes for the transmission being bad!! They told me they cant replicate the problem! I know it isnt the tranny. When the gaugues decide to work the car shifts fine! Ahhhhhhh! :8:

I agree with EarthQuake on the diagnosis and will also point out that the reason your tranmission shifts "funny" is the lack of VSS signal at the time the symptom is occuring...this will not only set a SES code for the VSS but trans codes as well...which is probably why the "fool" thinks you have transmission problems...that coupled with the "cannot duplicate" is sending them down the wrong road...IMHO...none the less check your trans fluid for color and odor...it should be pink/red (not dark = burnt) and smell...well...it should not smell burnt...

VSS = vehicle speed sensor
SES = service engine soon

Tranny fluid is fine. It looks like it was just changed. I actually checked that when this first started happening. Wouldnt the tranny fluid be all discolored if something was wrong?

most of the time yes...but not always...

Here is an update: I looked up the three codes that they said the computer was giving them as to why the "check engine" light is on. The three codes, Torque converter solenoid and the S1 and S2 solenoids (shift solenoids), if they were faulty would cause the car to stall. My truck never stalls. How should I go about telling this mechanic that i think he is mistaken? I tried to tell him yesterday and got the typical, "Uh, huh." I'm sure he has 100's of people try to tell him what they think is going on, but i truly feel my problem is not transmission related. :E:

I love you guys! *muah* I told "Bill" that i think he should check the ignition switch, he did, and he said all the signs point to that. So, they replaced it and hopefully all will be well. Yay! My girl gets to come home

OH, and they are covering it under warranty ::happy dance:: (y)

Sounds like a happy ending...but you need to get some miles under your belt to be sure the symptom is gone...IMHO it will be gone...but driving your Av is the real test...

Good techs learn to listen to what their customers have to say...customers KNOW their vehicles and Techs (the good ones) listen to their customers especially on intermittent symptoms...the fix is often in the story being related by the customer ("I turn off the engine, restart it and the symptom goes away" -or as in your case- "the dash lights quit and the trans and acceleration is poor...")...

Give us an update in a week or so and let us know how you and the Av are doing!!!

I will keep you guys posted. I drove it home (about 15 miles) then to work today (about 10 miles) and ::knock on wood:: so far all looks good. Thanks again for the help, and I will post an update soon :B:

I just had the same problem! 1 minute into my trip, the battery light came on in the DIC for a few seconds, and my 2002 truck never left 3rd gear after that. I drove it straight to the dealership and the diag. computer had set a bunch of transmission codes. The tech immediately said it was the ignition switch, he had seen it several times before. With 39K miles, they agreed to fix it for $50 deductible. I couldn't argue with that. It had fixed itself after sitting for 15 minutes, but I figured I might not get the same offer when it went out for good. I did not see a bulliten on this, but it seems like a common problem.

that same thing happened to my aunt and it was because she got that bad shell gas
Hey there Chevy Kid...the first thing I noticed from your post
is that you are from Florida. I have to assume at this point your Aunt is from Florida as well.
The bad gas from Shell you are referring to was/is a well documented case of excessive sulfur ratio in the fuel produced by Shell that was produced and sold only in Florida and some surrounding states. BUT...the symtom while similar, IS NOT THE SAME as is being described here.
The Shell fuel caused fuel gauge problems. The gauge would read empty when the tank actually was not. This resulted from the silver contacts on the tank sending unit corroding from the
sulfer. Many sending units have been replaced as a result; and
there is a GM fuel treatment that helped eliminate the problem in a few cases by cleaning the corrosion from the contacts.
The issue in this thread is when ALL the gauges stop working so while similar it is distinctly different.
I hope your Aunts car was repaired and that the fuel tank sending unit was replaced at no charge to her...if not...she should apply for a refund from Shell for the repair expense.

:8:I can't believe this. My '02 just started having the same problems. Started with a wild display on the cluster then, no overdrive :8: Next day gone and all's well ???

Today, hop in the beast, all guages light up and respond, but once started, the guage cluster is DEAD :8: And quess what, no overdrive :8: :8: :8:

Giggled the ignition switch...nothing different. :-[
Stopped and restarted it again (about 2 times) and the cluster came back to life. :) :) :D But still no overdirve :cautious: :cautious:

So, I'm hoping it the switch and nothing more :(

Hip, hop to the chevy shop and try to keep my money in my pocket. BTW it's at 39K on the milage, crap...oops, my bad

P.S.

Anyone know how hard it is to replace the ignition switch, as in special GM tools and that kind of stuff? Appreciate a comeback on this, to try and save a few buckeroos. ;D

I qould love some pics of the ignition switch and replacement details....

I just started having this problem yesterday or the day befor at first it was just random and for a few seconds all lights would flash and tach and speedo would stop working and then it would go back right on

then last night on the highway it did it for a good 10 mins straight no speedo, tach, fuel gauge, etc

and it was cruising maybe 65 or so and once in awhile the engine would rev pretty high (like over rev) and not shift

i hope this is the same problem anyone experience it just like that? and what are you saying it's the ignition swtich alone and 300 to replace it total or just parts?

thanks guys i was really bummed

and no warranty

Not cool just talked to my dealer he said if it is that it would be $400 plus labor ugh

have to go get a $115 diagnosis which he said they'd credit me towards my installation though

hmm

wish i knew it was that switch so i could try and order it somewhere cheaper

most likely it is the ignition switch......it has been 99% of time when people report problems like yours...

Search for "ignition switch" in the problem section...a ton of posts will come up...and most will have peeps description of a problem....then some suggestions....then the response it was ignition switch.....

good luck
