Wow! I got this put in a couple of weeks ago and liked it so much I thought I'd post about it. This is simply the best sounding HU I've ever heard, and has all the bells and whistles too. Anyone thinking about buying one of these, you won't be dissappointed. (y)

I also just got this head unit and man it is incrediable!! ?The only thing is you must install it with an Amp! ?I got mine off ebay for about 500.00 ?If you try to get it in a retail store it is about 899.00 ?I will also make the amp recommendation ?of ALPINE MRV-F450, it is a 5 channel amp that also works with this head unit well! ?I attach a pic of the head unit!!

Just another suggestions as far as amps go....consider checking out the Kenwood KAC-650 also a 5 channel amp...

Glad to some some other love for the Alpine stuff. ?I replaced a $1200 retail Sony HU with this and was ablsolutely blown away by the difference in sound. ?I don't know what they did to make this unit special, but it worked. ?As far as the amps, I am a Precision Power fan but that's old school and I already have them. ?No pics yet as I have wires everywhere under the rear seats and no bass I'm happy with. ?Whearas the Alpine and Kenwood amps are definately a quality product at a good price point, I would personaly go with JL. ?They aren't cheap but they are tough and sound spectacular, and I'm a big fan of their subs too.

Just my humble opinion.

I like the name dday. (y)

You're right, JL rocks and so does the stealthbox. ?This phrase just scares me:

Rear A/C ducts must be removed in extended-cab trucks. Permanent modification of factory console is required. If Stealthbox is removed, the console cannot be easily re-installed.

Oh well, guess there's no free lunch.

I have not had a chance ot play with the numbers yet, but thinking that two 8" kicker solo Barics might just do the job! They have surface area greater then most 10" woofers. I am hoping to design a box for behind the seats, just need time to sit down and design!

lanman1,

I had not caught that about the permanenant modification before, the guy at the stereo store did not say anything either. Glad you picked up on it, I was working on getting that very box. Back to the drawing board. May 8's will work, we'll see.

dday

I have had the CDA-7998 for a couple of months now, it is an incredible head unit. I am running a JL 500/1 on a JL 10W6 sub and a JL 300/2 bridged on Kicker 6.5 components and 6.5 2-ways. The sub is behind the console (avoided the duct thing), and the box is easily removeable. I haven't posted pics yet, still tweaking the size of the box to get it sounding right before I decide whether to finish the wood box or get a fiberglass one done. The Alpine is an incredibly clean unit with great adjustments for x-over, eq, etc. It takes a little time to get the navigation down because of all the flexibility. Normally a head unit doesn't do a good job in this area but I am very happy with this unit. (y)

About a year ago I installed the Alpine CDA-7995. I was considering upgrading to the model you have chosen but I decided to wait until April.

In April the new Alpine IVA-D900, which is all in one HU. It is a DVD/CD/MP3 Receiver/Mobile Multimedia Station with a 7" WVGA Low-Temp Polysilicone LCD Monitor. The bad part is that it's retailing for about $2300.00. That price really put me off, but I'll been saving a little each week just to have that unit.

I too have the JL Stealth Box and after investing 10K on my Avy stereo system and having experience with other sub cabinets in my BMW and Benz, I'm telling you this thing is tight and kicks ass!!! It'll blow you away if you want it too, rattle your bowels if you want it to, or even for subtle pristine oomph! it really delivers the low end with a clean presence. I listen to everything from Sinatra to Metallica and I've yet to experience a more versatile sub for my spectrum of needs. The only thing that SUCKS is you lose 80% of your center console space and your rear console vents have to be disconnected so that airflow is wasted as it flows out under the dash where it would've connected to the ducts that go underneath your console to the rear passengers. You know, although I say it sucks, I'd much rather keep the subs than take the space and vents back. The extra console space was nothing more than a junk bin which I ended up having to dig through, the rear passengers still get climatised from the main dash vents. So its a tradeoff that I'm glad I did. The bass is literally in your gut NOT giving you a headache as it clamors its way up from the rear. I've gotten some astonishing looks when I pump this bad muthah up. So I highly recommend it to those of you dealing with the minimal real estate issue under the rear seats when you got amps and other peripherals to make a home for.

My other mods: Pioneer DVD Touch screen GPS headunit, I also added XM satellite radio-the best!!! thing ever invented since toilet paper hands down!!!! The JL Audio Power Amp (500/5) 5 channel amp is a spacesaver with pristine clean power to boot, the CLifford Matrix 2 alarm system with remote auto roll down windows is a source of great comfort, the ALpine EQ creates the most colorful spectrum of sound, the JL Audio Center console subwoofer, the Infinity kappa Speakers with Tweeters mounted on the corners of the window pillars provide a perfect soundstage, Infinity coaxials in the rear, The NeoCar Jukebox with 80gB harddrive is simply a mindblower with a capacity of 16 days of continuous music without a commercial break, reverse cam in license plate, steering wheel knob from JC Whitney-laugh, but I'll whip that Avy around in a tight parking spot faster than you can say "does a one-legged duck swim in circles".
