I just replaced the DRL bulbs with Amber ones. For all those of you that have been raving about it, I LLLIIIKE IT !!

Anybody rigged them to be able to work at night ?
I would be interested to see how they spread at night for rain or fog situations.

this was my very first mod ever. and since then i love this mod and recommed it to every Av owner, and to all truck owners for all its worth...

thumbs up and A+'s here... ;D

*sorry dont know how to turn them on at night, but good idea...

This is hilarious - half the diehards on the truck boards are posting requests on how to disable the DRL's - easy if you read the manual [except in Canada] - and here is a post on how to turn them on. ?

To the point in question:

You need to consider a couple of things to do this. First, the strain on your wiring harness and alternator. Second you will need a relay or triac type setup to trigger the override - and perhaps a switch to make it an option.

I suggest that you contact R&D to see if they can accomodate - their stuff is inexpensive and quite well thought out.

The other option is convert the foglights to amber and use the R&D override package - that also would look "cool". This gives you the option of having the fog lights on with the low beams without having to remember to push the switch.

Thanks G,

I have checked out the R&D site.

More wires and relays under the hood. I think I might dive in to the BCM again and see how I might control everything from there.

I installed the two R&D mods (low/high beam, and the foglight always-on). Both were easy to do.

Note that the foglight controller goes under the dash, so it's a bit easier.

Well after tracing wires testing and probing, I was able to tap into the DRL relay wiring. I am now able to turn on the Amber DRL's at night with or without the headlights.
They look pretty cool. I am just waiting for some fog so I can see if they even help. More info on my photo site

Where is the info. on the Amber DRL Mod., such as bulb type and so on? Thanks.

The replacement bulbs are Sylvania 4157NALL the LL is the long life version - should be able to get them at any Pep Boys, AutoZone, Oreily or NAPA. The manual gives you hints to changing them - it helps to have little hands. The "wedge" type just ease in and out.

Two notes, first I've tried 2 AutoZones and a NAPA store here and they all only carry up to the 3157 on the racks :(

Second, the Sylvania website recommends the 4157NAK rather than the 4157NALL (the NAK is the Krypton version and is suppose to be even longer-lived than the NALL). Of course, finding the NAK's might be even harder.

I just completed this mod using Sylvania's 3157NA bulbs. I noticed that only 1 filament, in the 2 filament bulbs, light up. I didn't notice if this was the fact with the original bulbs.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a way we can get both filaments to work to have super bright DRLs?

I like the amber DRL look, but as for stepping up the wattage/brightness, I looked into this last November when I bought the Avy and when there was no Avy-only board - I read up on this topic on a Suburban/Tahoe/Escalade board and to be sure the thought of going brighter with their DRLs had occurred to many - BUT the reaction was pretty clear: those who had stepped up the wattage had experienced discoloration/scorching of the lens, since I guess it was not designed for higher heat. This was with new-style GM front ends, I suspect the Avy might also have same spec DRL lenses. Anyone who went brighter than stock DRLs with their Avy care to share?

Try the Sylvania 3157/4157 NALL - I think that you will find them quite bright - they should not burn the housing - the Silverado/GMC lights are different and mor susecptible to heat damage from what I hear - they also can easily melt their foglights - the AV ones are much larger for what that is worth.

I found blue replacements for the DRLs. I was looking at the ambers when I spotted the blue ones. I put them in and I like them a lot. They were labelled 3157 and had the dual filament. Almost all the packages I found have both 4157 and 3157 on them. I asked the parts guys to look at the catalogs for the bulb specs, and they had no idea what I was talking about. It seems the numbers are crossrefed with each other.

Baron, watch out with the blue ones - in some states they are restricted to emergency vehicles and can get you a ticket

Jersey won't even trust you to pump your own gas! I have a blue avy, and I am just going to have to look at those blue DRLs (here in CT we have a little more wiggle room, plus all the young bucks out there with blue everything (they even put lights where I have never seen lights before, like on their windshield washer spray nozzles!) have paved the way a bit - what about the foggy lights, maybe I go with the blue there instead and control who gets to see them and when ;) - any part number experts out there have one for the blue on the fog light app?

Hey Jackalanche,

The fogs are a halogen bulb not incandescent like the DRL's. As far as a part number, I could not find a replacement for them.

GO BLUE !!!

perhaps I finally have a use for the blue tint halogen bulbs being sold all over the palce on ebay . . . . .

Jersey, is the break your back state about anything auto related.....From what I understand as long as your low's aren't colored or obstructed by anything, they will most of the time not mess with you on fog lights and such..

Drl's I'm assuming don't fall under the category of primary lighting so I can't see them being illegal....

DRL may have some federal restrictions. I don't know specifically, but it's just food for thought. It's because of federal regulations that we have them, not because GM is being nice...

If the government is in some way involved, how come we are not seeing DRLs on foreign imports or other domestics (Dodge, Chrysler)? It seems that GM took the initiative on the safety side to add them to ALL their vehicles.
