AMBERS 101 - ATTENTION NEWBIES - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AMBERS

I remember when you could actually identify a Avalanche coming toward you by it's Ambers, I can still spot them blocks away. The first generation cladded Avalanche had the driving lights down low in the bumper and when you changed them to Ambers they stood out.

The WBH Avalanche came along and had the same front clip as the Silverado so while you might notice the Ambers you were not sure that it was a Avalanche until it was close enough to identify as such. Same with the second generation Avalanches, they could be a Tahoe or Suburban until they pass you and you get a good look.

Ahh, the good old days! Thinking of a new mod............  :B:

I didn't know it was legal in Canada.  Aren't our drl's our main headlights, or am I doing a blonde thing ... ??

Also, do you have a picture that you can post?  Thx!!!

DRLs are allowed to be Amber in BC(probably all of Canada but cant guarantee).  In BC we are only allowed amber, white and red lights and red lights are not allowed to face foward.

The DRLs are not the headlights but i do not know which bulbs they are on the 07+ years Avalanche as I own 04.

I'll get a pic tonight hopefully.

Thanks so much.  Now I know exactly what we're talking about here!!! :)

Also completed my Avy last night. The Amber DRL's look cool.
So there if you are in the area of Mount Hope, Ontario you may spot me (or the DW)

Just did the amber mod tonight, however I have a few burning ?s I might find out tomorrow anyhow. I replaced the factory 4114K bulbs with 3156 bulbs, is there any reason why the DRL's are double contact? The one's i got are single. Will post pics tomorrow if the bulbs aren't an issue. Thanks

I may have missed it in here. But to test.. if not using the reflection method. Throw your truck into neutral, apply the parking brake then get out to check... Best of luck

While it's too cold to go out in the rain and verify this, I'm virtually positive that on my '02, setting the parking brakes turns the DRLs OFF. This probably applies to at least some of the other years as well. But putting the truck in neutral and chocking the wheels should always work.

A member name HenryJ had mentioned setting up his drl's to wig-wag with his turn signals.  Can anybody offer instructions on this mod?  I've looked for one but can't seem to find it.  Thanks and have a great day to everyone!

Yeah!  I did the amber DRL's AND the All On Hi mod, not the fog lights with lo-beams however.  It was all so easy, I should have done these mode LONG ago.  Hell I've had my Av about 4 years now and that's pretty much the first thing I've done to it.

Anything different in changing then on a '12?

I'd like to know too...although I'm guessing it's about the same as the '07 and up. May be more of a pain for me than it's worth.

To check my DRLs I just parked on level ground, left the parking brake off, turned the ignition key to the run position (motor off), placed the gear selector in drive, and walked around to see if the lights were on (they were).

Hello Everyone! My first post, yay! Just got my Av yesterday and found this forum.  Looks like a great forum with great people.  This WILL be my first mod.  It's cheap, easy, and looks great.

Hello everyone,
Just got my Av today, it is a Black 2013 LT with the All-Star pkg.
First mod done by dealer...they swapped out the ugly chrome
grille for a black one from a different Av they had. Now I want to do these DRL's.
Do the directions at the top of this thread apply to my 2013? (these were written years ago.) as far as removing the headlights etc., or is there a newer way to get at the DRL
location. TIA for any help.

Dan

Take a look at this post for the 07 up instructions

I did my amber DRLs today.  When I was buying the at O'Reillys the old guy at the counter said "you're not supposed to do that, they are supposed to stay clear".  I asked him if GM was going to recall all the Vettes, Buicks and some mini vans that have Amber DRL's?  He looked confused and said, "Yea, I guess it's OK after all. that will probably look good too."

Amber bulbs to purchase <for either model of Av> are Sylvania 3157/4157NALL. A pair can be obtained at certain auto parts stores for around $5.50 or so. Do NOT pay $10 for these bulbs, as some other parts stores (who will remain unnamed) charge.

Not sure if it's in any of the other 20+ pages or not, but here's a little tip for buying automotive bulbs:
If you go to parts stores that have a "commercial sales" in the back the store, and get to know the guys at the store pretty well, they will sell you a bulk pack of bulbs.  They come in a plain white box, usually with 10 bulbs, and cost as much as the 2 packs of bulbs they sell out front!  Many of the larger Advance Auto stores have these departments, so I usually try to go to the ones that I know have them.

Only problem is keeping track of the bulbs that you didn't use yet, lol.  I always forget where I stored them  :E:
