Annoying Resonating Sound From The Front Of My AV

SInce I owned the truck I have had a bad vibrating/resonating sound upon acceleration. The dealer replaced that Catalytic Convertors, checked the undercarriage, nothing. Can't find a thing. It only happens on occasion. Not cold or hot, warm weather, cold weather. Very annoying. It's almost like its deep in the dash, but it sounds like it's from the engine compartment. It's going in today for the Mobil-1 oil change, front differentail leak, and the vib noise. I't embarrasing when I take clients in my truck and ask, "what the hell is that noise?"

I'm having the same noise. I'm taking mine in on Feb 4. Hopefully they can find something, its one of those noises that you just know they are going to say "normal" of won't be able to find it.

Let me know if you have success getting it fixed!

Other than that, LOVE THE AV!!!

Hmm sounds like it might have something to do with the intake. Maybe something is loose or has a hole and is causing funky vibrations in the engine bay.

Let us know for sure though.

Happy modding

And I thought I was the only one with this problem. I have had this same noise, thought it was coming from down in the dash. Had it before I put Manik tube steps on it. Now, sounds like it might be a rattling heat shield or something around the catalytic converter. Happens around 2000 rpm when accelerating, doesn,t matter whether it is hard accelerating or not. Have contemplated going back to the dealer with it, but thought I would get under it and check for a loose shield before I took the time to go down.

So what did you find out when you made your visits on the 4th? Will it save me a trip, or do I need to make an appointment? My dealer offers lifelong oil changes on my AV, so I can schedule this when I go for the next oil change.

Thanks
Jim

This sounds like the same noise I'm having... It has been doing it since new, and does it a little more now since the Flowaster was put in... It seems that when the engine has it's highest resonance (about 1800-2200 rpm and lugging a little) it comes in, and when the engine smooths out, or the muffler gets quiet, it goes away...

If I can describe the noise, it sounds like a piece of thin sheetmetal sitting in the back of an empty glovebox that vibrates and makes a noise at certain low engine rpm, and load... It is getting annoying... I run in tow/haul now, and as long as I don't lug the motor, the noise can't happen... I am very interested in your outcome... I have been thinking of jumping in the passenger seat with just socks on, and having my buddy drive the truck so I can try to pinpoint it... Like I said, it's a "fine" vibration sound kinda like if you put a vibrating tuning fork lightly against a metal box... Sorry... LOL ... Just trying to convey the sound... :B:

I am certain it's coming from the passenger side, and almost certain from deep inside the dash...

I too am having the same sound. It is VERY anoying :8: My buddy sits in the truck and complains all the time. I took it to my dealer to check but they would not do any road tests due to snow. I am bringing it back for this and the tapping felt thru the steering wheel when truning a slower speeds.

I noticed people are having transfer case leaks. Are these leaks noticable on the wheels? I found a heavy lubricant leaked on my front wheel a couple times. Is this is? Also I have my buddy drive the truck every now and then to see if he notices any changes over time. He has notices the brakes are a little low. I would think at 21,000 the breakes should still be fine. ANyone else have/had this issue?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I won't to go to the dealer with a list so I can get it all done at once.

ALso any input I get will be discussed at the New England GTG this Sunday, Feb 9th.

Thanks Guys....

Boy oh Boy...

I guess I should proof read first, before sending. Looks like I have a couple under my belt at 7:15 in the morning...

same resonating sound, at about the same rpm's (1800-2000). Thanks for starting this thread - it is so hard to describe, I have not brought it up with the dealer yet because I figured it would be chalked up to "normal". I have noticed that mine is considerably worse when cold. After warmup it seems to be less/gone. I'm VERY interested in what some of you guys find out from dealer visits!!!!

I too am having the same problems. It sounds like it's coming from either the engine or transmission. Very anoying :8:

I noticed it mostly after I had my dual exhaust installed. I believe that could be the culprit. Can anyone attest to the same senario?

When they installed the new pipes, they couldn't use the same mounting brackets. They had to improvise by mounting the pipes to the cross members and frame. What we could be hearing is low engine vibration.

What do you all think?

I to have had this noise (don't know if it's the same as everyone else), I took mine in last week for some other scheduled maintenance and the dealer ordered a new cowl for the drivers side.. Part will be in next week (free of charge) and will post if that fixes it also... :B:

Not sure if this will help but we have sold a lot of a exhaust tip called the Turbolator for people who do not like the drone sound that they get when using a modified muffler. I would be happy to provide a free unit for anyone to try. You can check out the info at www.ultrafitexhaust.com click on the picture of the Turbolator on the left side. At 12K mi I was getting a metallic ringing sound from my front end. It was most noticable starting at about 40 and pretty much dropped off around 65-70, although you could hear it slightly at lower speeds. I didn't rotate my tires at 7K as per the instructions and they were wearing unevenly. I had a 4-wheel alignment and rotation done and by 18K the noise was gone. Questions about the original alignment were deferred to Chevy who said that while the truck *could've* been misaligned from the factory, it was unlikely. (Right!) And it could've been that the truck was driven off road and knocked out of alignment. (It wasn't...)

I'm happier with my Av than anything else I've owned but... Like a Rock?

FWIW, I had the tires rotated at the local NTB and for $60 got a lifetime service on the rotation, so one more trip and it's paid for itself compared to dealer pricing.

Do a search on "vibration", "noise", "1800 rpm". Several months ago I had a noise similar to that. The dealership tried everything to fix it and finally had to pull the entire interior out and dynomat the firewall behind the dash. They also took apart the A/C unit and used "dope" on all the seals. It fixed the problem, but was a bit overkill. No more noises though!!!!

Thanks... I did a search a while back, and didn't find anything like my noise, so I have taken a wait and see position... Then I saw this thread, and figure my issue wasn't unique... Doing a search now...

Hey, if your dealer did all that for you, I would put them in my "favorites" ... I have 4 service friends at mine and 2 are management ... I would have to turn them over my knee to get them to agree to that... LOL

Did you read my description? Does it sound like what you had? I am 99% sure it's a DASH issue... I am positive it's not outside the interior...

Did the search, came up with nothing... I searched the three words in quotes, out of quotes, and if I search them seperate, I get the phone book... Maybe you could provide the link to the thread?

Thx

For all,

Don't have my AV yet, but still hoping :-[. My brother-in-law has a 2003, about 3 mos. old. He described the same type noise; vibration/rattle at about 5 and 35 mph.

The dealer found a heat shield that required an extra support clip. It seems that this is documented in a service bulletin related to this problem. Sorry, I don't have the SB number.

Check it out with the dealer and see what happens.

I am experiencing the same problem too. I only here it at lower speeds from somewhere behind the glove box area? I can't stand that noise either. I was going to take my truck in next week, because I also just noticed it is leaking fluid. I'm not sure what kind, I can't tell where it is coming from. I only have 4100 miles so far.

Having never paid any attention to the Converter area, all this sounds a lot like heat shields above the converter. I think this is a problem with nearly everything built since the EPA became boss.
Sure worth a look.

megastar,,,

Where is the heat shield you reference? And do you have any more detail? I sure would love that TSB number ...

I will post a link in here to the thread. I think I can find it. It sounds like the same thing. Does your sound happen between 1500 and 2000 rpm's mostly?

Here is a link to the problem that I had that got fixed. The phone # to my dealership is 1-803-732-6400 and my service managers name is Keith Vanadorn. He may be able to help you, but I think like 11H said, it is up to what your dealership will do for you. Not much info in the link, but it is a noise problem fixed.

A Couple of problems fixed

I had this vibration in my dash at 2000 RPM also. My dealer fixed it. I believe they said they had to isolate the heater hoses where they enter the heater coil area.

The noise was the Heater hoses on my Av. Dealer reversed hoses and noise is GONE!!!! Drove about 1000 miles since repair and it has not returned.

I have this problem too.

Did anyone get the TSB number? I have to show my dealer, otherwise it may be months and many times in the shop before it's fixed.

I looked at the TSB list, and this is the only one that refers to a noise in the dash...
