Anybody Have Rust Inside?

I just installed my fog controller and while I was under the dash I noticed 2 brackets on the sides of the steering wheel are beginning to rust. they run front to back and are hollowed out.

Anybody seen this?
It's a year old. I've had it new for 3 months.

Mine are like that. In the one wire FTDRL "how-to" pic they are like that...so I guess that they are all like that.

That's normal. The rust is probably a very light oxidation, and will never get any worse. The body will be long gone before it's a problem I know what you mean however, it seems sort of cheesy that GM didn't put a coat of paint or something on there.

If you look in your glove compartement you will see a long bracket that has rust on it too. Its just like underneath the truck. Everything painted except for the driveshaft and center of the rear end. Go figure.

GM could of just finished the dam job but choose not too.

Rust in all the places mentioned so far. Also, flip the rear seats up and look in around the latch at the seat frame.

I noticed rust when working inside my dash as well. It takes very little moisture to cause this to occur on untreated steel. Old, inexpensive computer cases will do this over time as well. Only five to ten years even in our dry climate and they will rust on the surface. As others have mentioned though, it rarely goes deeper. It's an annoyance more than anything.

Add me to the rust club. Put in my fog light controller yesterday and found the rusty stuff. I was shocked at first, but then figured other people must have it too - checked on the board, and sure enough... ;-)

BTW, the fog light controller is cheap, quick, and cool! Check it out!

Here's my new controller hanging around the rust:

I bet they are using a COR TEN type steel which will allow a small thin layer of rust to form and then this layer of rust kinda forms a barrier to prevent any more rust from forming......

inside I do not see this as a problem ecspecially since it is covered up by plastic
