A call to my insurance company and now im registering my Avalanche with classic plates. 5 years early for NY registration! I think its pretty cool.

I checked last week when I paid registration & taxes.
My state requires 25 years old based on model year.

I bought mine in 2001 but is a 2002 so I have to wait until 2027
That will be the last time I register it!

Yeah they approved mine I dont know why or how. Try calling your insurance company. Mine mentioned they had a 15 year old vehicle policy. They marked my registration Classical. Now I can order my plates.

I had purchased an Antique License Plate for my 1993 Ford Explorer when it turned 25 years old back in 2018.

There was no stated restrictions as far as annual mileage and such.

You simply had to list another license plate number of another vehicle you owned that was not an antique.

Shortly after getting the tag for the Explorer, one of our fine legislators decided the state was losing too much revenue from people that were placing the antique plates on their old daily drivers.

The rules were changed so that a vehicle now has to be 45 years old before an antique plate can be purchased.

My current oldest vehicle is my 2003 Avalanche and it will not qualify until 2048.

It is unlikely to ever get an antique license plate while I own it as I would have to be 90 years old and likely not still driving it or anything else, for that matter.

Well, I'm hoping they are spending all of that extra money wisely.

When we stopped driving the 1993 Explorer as a daily and only used it as a back up if one of our other vehicles were out of service for some reason, I was told by my insurance agent that we could classify that truck as a "Recreational" vehicle as long as the mileage was 700 miles annually or less.

The insurance was liability only, but was dirt cheap.

I had to send in an affidavit stating the current mileage for the first couple of years, but they stopped asking after a while.

Recently, we got my mother a reduced rate on her Tahoe since she very seldom drives anymore and the few miles that get put on that truck are family members just driving at my mother's request to keep the truck active.

Anyone not driving as much as they used to could do themselves some good by visiting with their agent and see if they can get a reduced rate due to the actual lower mileage they are currently driving.

My mother's rate dropped and the insurance company never even bothered to check the mileage.

In addition to what has already been said above, some states have DMV regulations or state laws that limit not the mileage but the use of a vehicle with Antique or Classic car plates. In those states you can only drive the vehicle to a repair shop or event such as a car show or parade etc. so you can't use it as a daily driver.

It was ...,One and Done ...for me. 11 years and we can get Permanent Plates. No restrictions at all. I was able to register mine for around $185 once and he's good to go for as long as I own him. Most other vehicles like an atv , boat , travel trailer , motorcycles and utility trailers are issued as permanent. All my stuff is permanent plated. I hang onto eveything forever seems like. I'm gonna be buried in my Avalanche ......

In PA classic it must be older than 15 years but it limits use and occasional use. Occasional transportation and similar uses are defined as no more than one day a week. I'll stick with the regular one for now.
I thought Pa was like Md., 25yrs. Are you sure?

Edit: I just checked... You're right!

Thanks. I'm keeping my standard plate. Maybe I'll get a custom front plate with the year on it. Have just under 100k miles and did a 300 nile round trip to Longwood Gardens yesterday. Like sitting in your living room; comfortable, quiet, safe feeling among the heavy truck traffic. Best vehicle I've owned!
