Are my CDs suppose to be that hot?

Just got back from my long cross country trip. I noticed that my CDs are extremely hot when I eject them. The radio face plate is also very warm (almost hot) to the touch. Even when I was in cooler climates. Is this normal? It's hard to believe that the temp is that hot inside the dash.

Mine does the exact same thing - to the point where CD's will skip and not play. I have also had the radio replaced once already. Doesn't seem like this should be happening

I've never had that happen in my Av. Sounds like you have a problem. Can you take it to the dealer and show them the problem while it's happening?

If I listen to a 60 minute CD first track to last at a good volume the CD is pretty dang warm when i eject it.

I had that same problem with an aftermarket HU in my old truck, the internal fan quite, he HU got very hot, and well.... the interal amp blew... (while on a camping trip in montana.... drove for 7 hours home with only my Subs working.... :E: )

A HU in any car will get warm when playing Cd's, and CD's will get hot, but if they are too hot to handle, then there is an internal problem with the HU.

Not a stereo guru, just speaking from past experience.

I think it's a chevy thing. The last truck we had was a 2000 Chevy Silverado and it did the same thing that our AV does. But it only happens at night time when the internal lights in the radio are on. During the day it doesn't get hot, just at night. I had my head unit replaced and it does the same thing. I think there are just too many lights in the radio and it causes it to get too hot.

This a great reason for making car copies of your CDs and keeping the originals in the house. I bought a really nice felt lined CD Case and make copies of all of my "road discs" The only original ones that I carry are new discs so I can see if I want to make a direct copy or pick and choose songs. TDK makes a scratch resistant disc that works great for harsh environments.

I also transfer the disc to my MP3 file with MusicMatch Jukebox, but actually make a bit-for-bit copy of the disc for the car.

The heat may be worse if you load up the changer with 6 discs. Basically 6 heat sinks inside the unit. I agree with UPS_er this does not seem right. The discs should never get too hot to hold. Unless you park in the AZ sun for 6-8 hours and eject the disc as soon as you get back in the car. If this is the case, you should probably get a Sunshade for the front window or a dashmat.

I had the same problem with mine. It seemed that when the heat control was turned to the red the radio would warm up. I kept it on the cold setting and it seemed fine. Now I have an aftermarket stereo and I have no problems. But, this could be because the face comes out of the stereo also. Good luck, hopefully you'll notice that your control was on the warmest setting also.

This is one I will have to check out - I never noticed a heat problem with CD's - they do get scratched in the truck a lot :(

I fixed this by getting XM RADIO hehehehehe......

Nah the radi itself gets hot and waqs discussed before....this is why they have a little fanon back to cool it of....

Mine is not too bad buut my AC is pumpin all the time due to the hot temps outside the truck

My single disk '02 radio gets the disks toasty, but not uncomfortable to hold.

And I fixed it by putting in a 40 GB hard disk based MP3 player. >:D

Good advice, I used to do this. But now, I have about 250 disks at my fingertips at all times, and I never have to do that anymore.

SS,
Been thinking about this myself. On my old Silverado I had an in-dash cassett player and the CD Changer was aftermarket under the seat with FM Modulation. I used a cassett adapter plugged into the headphone jack of my MP3 Player. Since the AV does not have a factory cassett player how do you get the tunes into the radio?

My CD's get really hot, too - and it stopped playing my "truck copies" (which work just fine in an older portable CD player). Looks like a visit to the service department is in my future.

For my stock '02 head unit, I used a GM9-AUX adapter from JP Customs. There are also other interfaces if you have other head units.

Do a search for "GM9" for some interesting threads. You can also read more about this mod by clicking on my signature pic.

I have noticed that the rear seat radio display on my '03 also gets noticably warm to the touch... not hot, but quiet warm and certainly hotter than I like to see for any electronic component.
