At A Crossroads: 20's Vs 22's

HELP!!! I don't know which to choose. I have been looking at putting either 20's or 22's on my '03 AVi.

I like the 22's because I get the look I want (I personally like more chrome)...

BUT...

I like the 20's because they are less costly.

Has anyone else come to this crossroad?

Yea, I came to that crossroad...then the wife said we needed to replaster the pool.

My suggestion, pay the extra to get the look you want even if it prolongs your purchase. The reason you're upgrading your wheels is for the "look" anyway.

If you were changing your wheels because of a functional reason, then it would be a different story.

I went with 20s myself, I 'heard' (I don't know from experience) that the 22s would have been more rough of a ride than I would have wanted....

Plus I got my 20s for $960 and 22s would have cost both arms and both legs

If you ever plan on towwing, stay way from the 22's.....unless you like the idea of replacing bent rims

Of course it depends on where you live and how you drive. The 20's give you a good amount of rubber to work with. The 22' much less, to the tune of about 50% I believe.

I would go with the 20's, BUT, if you are going to go 22's I would wait as long as possible. It makes me to see what the 20's are selling for now compared to last year when I bought. The same will happen to some degree with 22's as there are now 23 and 24's to be the price leader.

I'd go 20". 22" and 24" you're going to have a rough ride and risk bent rims. Especially with 24". Also the rubber is going to get very expensive and rare as you go past 20" rims.

The hardest thing is the wait, which is why I thought about getting the 20's. ?I know that the best thing to do is wait, but man is it tough. ?You're right though...if I am only changing it for the look, it should be for the look that I want.


The ride was a concern for me at first. ?I am not sure how rough the ride would be with the 22's. ?I would like to get input from anyone on 22's on how well they ride.

I will never do any towing. ?I bought the Truck mainly for its looks and because I was so impressed with the quality of vehicle Chevy made. ?This website helped a lot in my decision as well...Thanx to all members



I live in Dallas, TX and I mainly drive on the highway. ?I don't drive fast, so I am not concerned about that. ?Plan on taking them off in the winter time, but we just get an occassional ice storm. ?I noticed the same thing with the price...the biggest cost is the tires. ?I have been pricing tires and they are going at close to 300 each for 22's.

Just my .02 but I think 20's are just the right look (custom but not the jap ricer look). When the rims get bigger than 20 the lack of rubber (to me) looks cheap and with alot of the big rims there is all of that space between the hub and the rim.

To answer your other comment, I think it will only look cheap if you put some cheap looking rims on there. ?I have seen some 20's that have too much DUB on them.

One of the things that I like about the look of the 22's is less spacing between the wheels and the truck (don't know what area to actually call that). ?Does there seem to be a lot of this with the 20's.

Go with what you want but know all the consequences of your decision.

On a 22 inch tire with a 305/40/22 tire you will have the same dimension of the stock 17 inch wheels but you will go from 7.3 in of sidewall to 4.8 in. That?s not a lot for a 6,000lb truck. I went with 20?s and a 5.5 sidewall and don?t think I?d take it any lower as I still want to use my AV as a truck. Hopefully the dang rims will get here soon as they?re now two days late.

My wife car has 17? rims with 4.4 in sidewalls. Every time I hit a pothole I?m afraid that the rims are going to get bent and her car only weights 3200 lbs. 22s look great but you may have to use a little more caution when you drive. I'm sure I will do so even with 20's.

I think you'll find a better tire selection in the 20" size, as well as less cost. The 20's will give you a little more rubber to protect those rims also.

I HAD A 99 ESCALADE WITH 20'S. THE RIDE WAS NOT AS GOOD AS STOCK. NOW, I HAVE A 02 EXT WITH 22'S AND IT RIDES ALOT BETTER THAN MY 99 WITH 20'S. GENERALLY LESS SIDEWALL MEANS WORSE RIDE, HOWEVER I'M EXTREMLY HAPPY WITH MINE.

after reading this post i seem to agree what is being said about the 20's vs. 22's theory.
it just so happens that i went to Pep Boys this morning, and i saw some American Racing wheels. they had them in 20's and 22's. the 20's were around $369. the 22's were about $850. more than twice the price. i do not remember the model of wheel. i will do some research, or just go back to the store.
my biggest problem with the 20's is the space in the rear wheel well. what if i were to use a little taller tire in the back? not much taller though. kinda like when they put 18's on the front & 20's on the back. i will have the same diameter wheel just two different tire sizes. although this would make rotating impossible. just a thought.

go for the 22's i pulled my prowler with 23's and had no bent rims don't listen to these people i had a 96 tahoe with 20's and my 23'd ride smoother and handle better. if money is the issue then 20's would be the best way to go. but you could get some nice 22's for like $3000 try kmc they make a good wheel i can also help you out with some rims but 20's are just to small and the towing is just an excuse to be cheap if you ask me if your going to do something do it "BIG"

yes i run 23's with a 2/3 drop i have a little rubbing in the rear but we trimmed it out now its fine i am thinking about 24's or 26's next. but as far as nitto being the only 22 inch tire thats false there are cheaper tires and there are better tires i belive there are atleast 5 22" tire makers and if you ask me i would go pirelli scorpion thats the best truck tire on the market forget nitto they are rreally for hondas or atleast when they first came out they were i think pirelli has the name and has the best producct out right now but you will pay for it. if you have any questions please feel free to email me i can help you i havea wide amount of knowledge about 20-26" rims and tires as i have owned many vehicles with large rims but to out it like this even my prowler will be sitting on 22" boyds in 3 weeks so you gotta "DO IT BIG"

I just ordered 22 x 10 boze splixx six, I am going to run 305/45/22 tires, most likely Nitto. I dont think there is another tire supplier that makes a 45 series tire. Should have them on by the weekend, will post pics!

I saw somewhere in one of the posts that DJM made some shocks for the AVi that will bring the back end down 2". I will see if I can find the posts...it seems like a better solution than putting two different tire sizes on your truck

Well, right now the tally is...

20's - 12 in favor
22's - 3 in favor

I really have depended on the members a lot for mods and I am starting to lean more towards the 20's.

I have a friend who has a Dodge Ram and he has 22's. The ride is rough and it doesn't handle as well as a Ram without the 22's. Of course he rode in my truck one day and couldn't stop talking about how smooth the Avi drove.

I am still deciding, but it looks like the smaller rim is winning this one.
