I had a very heated discussion with a coworker today (albeit friendly discussion) who is also a die hard GM man like myself.

He just purchased a GMC Sierra 4X4 black pick up with the mongo Duramax diesel engine for about $42,000

He said that the closest relative of the AV is actually the Silverado--I insisted that it is the Suburban. He said that if you crawled under an AV (which I have numerous times because it is cool to see what's down there) you are basically looking at a Silverado 1500.

Then how come Duramax diesels aren't offered in the AV if the 1st cousin is the Silverado? Does the AV share more with the Sub than just the frame and engine?

I say: Genealogy is this---

AV -- top of tree

WBH AV--adopted brother

Sub--1st cousin

Silverado--2nd cousin

Hummer--obnoxious flashy neighbor

Thoughts, anyone?

You so have a point in the argument. I have always heard that the Av is 85% Suburban and 60% Silverado. Remember, though, the Sub and Silverado share parts.

I don't have any real preference. I prefer to think of the Av as a truck but I do like that luxurious ride and other SUV qualities derived from the Suburban.

Hey Colorado, I love your math. 85% suburban, 60% Silverado? That makes 145%.

HHhhmmmmmmm! Maybe your right after all. The Av is quite a unique vehicle.

Your friend is wrong - it is a Sub frame - thats why you won't see a D/A in it - all you have to do is check Helms manual - it is not a Rado frame.

Rolling chassis of the Av is essentially all Suburban.

Remember, I said that they SHARE parts so that's what brings it over 100%?;D :0:. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

Sub frame is correct- it is not even classified in the VIN book we have at the police dept - not even close on serial numbers to a pick-up-
it is an AVALANCHE, none like, never will be-
we do have the same father though-

Gotta go with the Sub on this one. Most lift kits and lower accessories are based on Sub kits from what I am being told.

I think the real question is which of the two will change to be the most like the AV?

That's easy, the Silverdado. It's started already!

The Av shares parts with both, but I gotta agree, it's more Suburban than Silverado. That's a big part of why it has such nice handling. (And why the hard core truck people will never take it seriously!)

As stated the AV is base on the Suburban chassis but there are some differences. The C-ring is the big difference between them.

As the back third of Suburban was cut off for the AV bed the structural was weekend. The C-ring, which run from rail to rail behind the cab and is what the sail panels cover, was added to reinforce the chassis. This steel cage actually made the ASV more ridged than the Suburban and helps account for the AV?s great ride.

And the sail panels that cover the C-ring where designed to prevent the wind from swirling into the cab when the midgate or rear glass are removed. Cool engineering !

I remember a long time agao when Chevy even stated the AVY was based on the Suburban...they used...

For the first one I have heard that they stripped a burb of the body etc and put on the clay model of the AVY.....

The wheel base matches a burb not a avy...the parts are common with a burb...

the interior parts are used on the AVY, Burb, & rado.....

So I say burb is the uncle......where as the AVY is the wild nephew with a thing for having fun and the outdoors....

Many would think and relate the Av to the Silverado because of the truck likeness...but I have always heard and been told that the Av is almost all Suburban...by some service guys and many members on this board... :B:
