Av on fire; Av in collision

Last week I drove on the Dutch Highway. Suddenly the whole rearview was gone because all that gray smoke. I stopped on the side of the road and saw smoke escape from under the hood. When I opened the hood flames 2 feet high suddenly appeared on the right side of the engine. And then I saw that the whole engine bay was soaked with oil. I managed to stop the fire by means of spraying like hell with a small spray bottle of degreaser I found in one of the saddle bags.

It appeared that the GM dealer had done a sloppy job when placing an aux trans oil cooler two months earlier. One of the lines had come loose pumping the oil on everything in reach. Rather remarkable: after repairing the line and topping up the trans-oil the engine started like it never had been on fire!
The dealer admitted the fault and we made an appointment some days later to have the custom oil cooler replaced by the original one.

Three days ago I drove on the same stretch on the fast lane when the traffic became thicker. Suddenly the car in front of me braked. I discovered it braked harder than I could and I pressed the Av into the back of that car in front of me. And yes, a second later a car crashed into the rear of the Av. So again I had to stop on the emergency lane.
It became clear that nobody was wounded. But the car in front of me could not open the rear doors any more, although it could be driven. The car behind me was totalled. The Av had a minor cut in the bumper cladding from the hitch of the car in front of me. On the back nothing hinting of damage could be discovered.
I was glad the wife had made a dent in the rearbumper this summer by backing up the car while the trailer was on the hitch. Resulting in an impression of the trailer into the rear bumper  Otherwise the person in the car behind me would never believe that she had to bring her car to the shredder while my Av stood there like nothing had happened.

It is now an insurance-issue.

Wow...

Any pictures?

Glade to here no one was hurt and the AV came out of this OK . sounds like that stretch of the highway is bad luck to you .

I'd probably be crying with all that going on so close together but I cant resist

? shthpnz

You know, I'd keep that AV for life! Seems like a good luck charm.

Oh, and if you see a '68 Rolls out there somewhere, stay the <blank> away from it. (My friend, Hans will be driving.)  :D

damn , them the brakes!. Glad your alright.  You gona blame oil driping on the breaks from the tranny cooler, so you couldn't stop?

Hey Roel,

its good to hear you are OK :D The important thing is that nobody is wounded. All other things can be repaired :D

Are you sure that your Av is not damaged? My dad had the same kind of accident with his S10 Blazer. The BMW behind him and the Toyo before him were totally wrecked and his Blazer looked like new, but the frame was bend, so it became harder to open the rear doors.

Schelbi.

:needhug: Here is a hug for you. Sorry about the wreck and fire/smoke. Hope you get it all taken care of.

Sam

Hey Roel, just read your post about the unfortune you went through  :E: good everybody got out and not hurt  :D hope this two incidents is all you have to go through for the future
maybe a brake mod comes in handy.......I remember my AV did not stop to good either  :p and it would have been the next mod if I didn't sell it two years ago
I wish you better luck for the future  (y)

Thank you all for your replies!

Those pictures are taken, but now I need software to blank out the licence plate on the pictures. Azureus is doing it's proper job, so tomorrow I post the photo's.

I thought of that! Had the brakes cleaned first thing after the oil leak and had them checked after the accident by the dealership, but alas, that was the same dealership that made the weak oil line connection in the first place

Yes I have to get that upgrade indeed. With those 22 inch wheels the braking got not better. But as I understood with bigger brakes I cannot use my sparewheel anymore, do I?

Regards, Roel

Here they are. As you see the hitch of the car in front of me ripped some plastic near te licenceplate. On the rear no damage at all, while the car that hit me was totalled.  :p You see left of my (heavy) hitch an impression of the trailer, made this summer.

No I used it to download software to blur my licenseplate on the photos.

Roel,
I am so glad that you nor anyone else were hurt.  It just shows how tough Chevys are.  I hope that you get it all fixed up and try to stay off that stretch of highway.
Tina

Looks like you've had a good run of bad luck!

Glad no one was hurt and that your AV was not dinged up too bad.

Hey Roel,

I heard from Wera & Johan your fire misfortune.
Didn't know about the car crash.
Glad you're alright.
