Alright, currently in the family we have a 1998 chevy malibu and a 2003 avalanche 2500. The wifey's car decided to flick on its check engine light. The only way to read the code without taking it into the shop is to buy a diagnostic reader. The malibu uses the GM OBD (On Board Diagnostic) Generation 2 connector. My question is, does the 2003 avalanche use this same system. If it does, it would be very convenient to buy one diagnostic reader that can be used on both vehicles. So does anyone know what diagnostic interface is on the avalance and if it is the same system as other chevys, can I just buy a generic OBD Gen 2 reader and plug and play?

Thanks guys, your help is appreciated.

here is some info on one of the tools available to do diagnostic testing on GM products. http://media.gm.com/corpcom/releases/g960110a.htm. here is a pic of the one i used. this will work on both your GM vehicles. if you have a Mac Tools guy in your area you can setup an account to make a purchase. this is the tool that GM techs use. depending on what you get in the kit (Basic or Deluxe) price can range from $999 to $3999.

Well I actually answered my own question today, and it was not that expensive at all and works not only on all chevy vehicles made after 1996, but on most vehicles domestic and imports after that date as well. The unit is the Equus 3100 and from what I reasearched before I bought it, it seems to be the best value out there. I picked mine up at Kragen on sale for $99. It is simple to use and the manual includes generic codes which have standardized across the industry as well as manufacturer specific codes. If you have to use thing twice in its life, you have already paid for it by saving in diagnostic fees. Anyway, just wanted to share. Its a great troubleshooting product for the DIYers out there. Have a look at the websight below for a little more info, or search on your own. Lots of info out there on it. If your check engine light comes on, this puppy tells you whats wrong, simple as that.

This product appears to clear codes also so if your running performance mods and you get a code you can clear it before you go to the service dept. Kewl. :)

If you have On-Star they will read the trouble code for you and tell you what's up.
