Avalanche Claims First Victim

This is my first post here so let me start by saying what a great site this is. I've had my Avalanche for about a month now and have gone through the wealth of information this site has to offer.

Took my first long trip this past weekend with the wife and kids and pulled into a Tim Horton's for a pit stop. Started to back into a spot when I heard a clunk...:9: Got out to see a Subaru sedan with its bumper hanging off and cringed at the thought of what the back of the Av would look like. Bent over to check it out carefully, wiped off the paint from the Subaru and saw no significant damage. Man was I relieved and so was my four year old daughter who rushed out to check things out.

I felt so bad that I offered to pay but the other guy insisted on calling the cops. It turned out OK because the officer figured I was no more at fault than he was since we backed into each other. The catch is the Avalanche fared much better than the other guy's car so he decided to go through the insurance and it didn't cost me anything. ;D

The hilarious part about all this is I installed the Poron backup sensor the day before this incident. I'm not sure if I just didn't believe it or if the other guy was backing up too quickly but I do remember it beeping (I got the one with the digital display that beeps). I did notice that the middle sensorwasn't working because it was not plugged into the transmitter properly so that may have affected the sensing time because this guy hit me right on the hitch. I was expecting it to start beeping at 2 meters so in my head I may have thought it was the distant early warning beep when it was the holy crap hit the brakes beep

I have learned a few lessons from this:
  • don't ignore your backup sensor :2:
  • know what your sensor is telling you
  • if in doubt STOP
  • a voice alarm may initiate a quicker driver reaction
  • the Chevy Avalanche kicks butt :B:
So as we drove off again after a couple hours delay to our trip I turned to my wife and say, "I guess the Avalanche just claimed its first victim...."

Being a Canadian living in the US I often miss Tim Horton's. One thing I don't miss is Canadian gas prices. I recently took the AV to Toronto for a cousins wedding and missed the last gas exit before the border, hence I had to fill up in Niagra Falls Canada. The gas light just came on and it needed about 26 gallons to fill. The gas cost me $101 CDN, but you probably know this.

In regards to your accident, I would rcommend that you have your dealer check your bumper out for damage. While I was away on business my wife took my AV into St. Louis and was rear ended at a stop light. She was hit by a jeep which sustained no damage but my bumper had to be replaced to the tune of $1,050 US. Of course the jeeps insurance covered it but it still hurts to know that your new baby was damaged.

Similar thing happened to me the first day I had my AV. I was waiting in line to pick up a pizza and the guy behind me says "is that your truck out there?" I say yes thinking he's going to compliment me.. And he says well some lady just backed into it.. So I go outside, some lady in a honda is trying to take off, the back of her car all crushed in. Well I made her stop (we have liberal carry laws in GA) then checked the AV. Not a scratch on it. Most of the people from the restraunt came out to see the bumper and couldn't believe it, they said the truck got hit HARD. We finally let her go, the last thing I wanted to do was fill out a police report.

I know that on my last car that sort of hit would have probably cost me $1500 so I was plenty happy.

Welcome to the neighborhood Sparky. Glad to hear that your Av is OK - and that the rear end of the Av can take a lickin' with minimal damage. I say this because I've felt it likely that I may back into something someday given the limited rear visibility of the Av. Maybe it is time for a backup sensor!

Hey all! Thanks for your replies, sympathy, advice and afinity for donuts.

rl201, your right Timmy's is great and those gas prices suck. I paid about $1.60US/gal this weekend (after a few conversions). How does that compare to the prices down south?

Later,

I go to Tim Hortons every Sunday. They have the best hard rolls one can taste.

As for the rear end. Ya I got hit in FL while on vacation. This little FORD hit me while I was at a light. Not a scratch on the bumber, her hood was warped, headlights and grill broken. Later I found a few scratches under the bumper, but nothing you could see.

This is one great truck.

p.s. It scared the he?? out of the wife and kid.

That's pretty close to prices out here on the left coast. They have dropped slightly down lately to about $1.50/gal.

Here in central PA, I am paying 1.25-1.29 for 87 Octane.

Still glad my S-10 doesn't take as much as the Av will (note to self - save gas money along with down payment)

Paying $1.51 in bellevue/factoria

As for Horny Tim's, I do miss that one. I still laugh at the line-up for doughnuts at Krispy Kreme in Issaquah. It's like doughnuts didn't exist in the Pacific Northwest!! Traffic cops, 1 hour lines (even at 1am), and grumpy people upset by having to wait so long. The doughnuts are OK, but not like Tim Hortons!!

I am glad to hear the back bumper is that strong....

From experience I know the front isn't as tough :( ...long story but I slide on an icy mtn road into an Audi, which needs a new front bumper and headlight, and the Audi slide into a Rio and it had a big dent the door.... attached is the little damage done to the AV.

My choice on Epics was the Blix. Now that I've bit the billet ?;) I can harly wait. Going to take 10 days :(. Going to have to go back to the thread, how much have you spent on mods? I've now pushed myself well past the max class. Oh well, it's just money. And I'm having fun.

I am off the scale. ?I stopped thinking about it ?

And that was just one month I think

Hi sparky! That poll is likely in US dollars so you may have a way to go to catch up with goo ;) . Any pictures of your Av? Make sure post some once you get the wheels.

Based on what you've spent you seem to be heavy into mods. Do you have any good Canadian sources for Av accessories? With the exchange rate, customs and brokerage fees ordering from the US gets pricey$$ :C:

No, I converted all my mods into US$. Tht way it did not sound so bad. ;)
THe generic items like exhaust I've gotten from around here, but the drop kit, and even the wheels are coming from the US. Also ordered the kit from stripeman and will do the dash upgrade if I can get it for the 40/20/40 seat configuration.
Lowrider in Vancouver brings the drop kits up so you don't have as much of a hassel

Hi, I finally took a couple of pictures but not very good at it. Trying to find the instructions for posting to the site. For now here is one before new wheels, another week or two for them.
Well that failed, too large. So I made an album instead ;)

About gas prices :-[
You are lucky ! In Norway we pay aprox: 4,60 us.dollar for a gallon of gas ! My av 2500 is a expensive ride !!
But its worth it :-* :-* :-*

I watched on the local news that a fellow AV owner towing a boat rolled it over!!! Ouch! He is going to need more a quick wipe of the bumper to fix that one! Heavy Rain was involved in the crash!

I remember my days in Hamilton Ontario were there was almost a Tim Horton's on every corner. It was as bad as 7 Eleven's on Long Island.

I went with some close friends to Nova Scotia last summer and I couldn't believe how many Tim Horton's there were either. My friends family (who live there) kept comparing them to Starbucks and were saying how much better Tim Horton's was.
Personally I couldn't see the comparison, Starbucks is a "gormet" coffee place while Tim Horton's was more of a coffee/donut place like Winchels Donuts.
Either way I loved the Tim Horton's frozen coffee, I couldn't get enought of those.

For all the Tim Horton's lovers out there, I thought I would share the news. Tim Horton's was bought out by Wendy's Family Restaurants a couple of years ago. Since Wendy's is HQ'd in Dublin, OH we have seen a lot of Tim Horton's pop up. Give it a couple of years and they will be in your neighborhood.
