The evolution and confession of a person who used to hate cladding:

Me. Yours truly. Supermobile. ?:)

Thought I would share that today I took a good look at the exterior of a new Cadillac Escalade EXT.

I honestly like the looks of the Avalanche better!I like the looks of the Av front-end better, and I like the cladding!

I have evolved from one who seriously considered painting the cladding, to one who thinks it looks good and in fact is what gives the Av personality.

I guess Chevy's forward thinking need not be feared after all. ?;D

I agree, the more you look at the Avy the better it gets... now if only we could just fix those flat topped wheel arches.

It only took one look at the picture on the CAFC site of the red claddingless one, which has rounded wheel arches, to make me realize, I like the flat-toped wheel arches too! It is part of what distinguishes the Av from other non-Supermobiles.

I think the Av looks more rugged than the EXT. Now,don't get me wrong here,If I was a CEO of a Big Company, and had plenty of money to hire people to do my dirty work, like hauling stuff,I would own an EXT or 2 or 3. But since I still haven't hit the lottery yet,and have to do my own dirty work,I like the AV much better. I just couldn't see hauling a load of creek rock or a 4-wheeler in the back of a Caddy. But that is me. :B:

I give the cladding 2 thumbs up since the Av's debut..not only does it shield the sheet metal but cladding is a lot more inexpensive to replace than a whole door....not only that but for must of us highway driving is a must and I used to be able to count the number of chips, and rock marks all over my spoiler on the other car.....the cladding has its advantages..... :B:

yes. Simple answer (opinion). I might use a different word than prettier, but the answer is still yes. :B:

The AV is simply tougher... I would never consider putting a load of gravel in the EXT!!

I like the bells and whistles on the EXT, but I do think the AV has more attitude... You can't tell if you have an Escalade or Escalade EXT when you look at them from the front, but you sure know an AV when it is coming towards you!!!

I'm with you Supermobile. The Escalade has got a few nicer features, but honestly I love the Avalanche better.

i agree- the av for sure has more attitude than the ext. however a 345 hs. powerhse would be nice w/ the z71 pkg. i was one who hated the cladding and now i wouldn't think of painting it

i have to agree with you guys on that one as well. i like the EXT for what it is but the AV is no slouch either. i hit my AV's door with my other car door a couple of days after i got it. nothing! nothing the average person could notice. i probably could not find that spot today. after that i did not want to paint the cladding anymore.
plus, the EXT front end is not as attractive to me. and most of all i drove the EXT with full-time 4 wheel drive and was not impressed. i know it has the mighty 6.0 liter, but with all wheels turnin' it just seemed rather sluggish. i tried to power brake it and it did nothing. it felt rather tired. :6:
at the end of the test drive i got back in my AV and nailed it. i was very happy with my decision to say the least. ;D

The most unattractive part of the Escalade is the Price....and not to mention the insurance to cover that puppy here in NJ.....ouch!! :B:

I recently saw a White EXT and a White Av with a Mariah Converstion Package on the same evening. BTW..that was the first I had noticed that the EXT has rounded wheeelweels. They were both really, really nice. With rounded wheelwells, color-matched cladding I'd stick with the Av. But put the Av front end on it and I'd have to take the EXT. Have to be much less money than it is though!

The things I like with the EXT are the POWER!!!!!!!!!

I would love to have the 6.0 liter. with 345 HP.

I would like the 8.0 liter, but wouldn't like the fuel consumption.

And, those all power seats. I wish my power seats were also power everything else. I love my vette's seats.

EXT Power? . . . Car and Driver ran a comparison to the Av and the EXT got to 60 MPH 0.4 seconds quicker than the 5.3 liter Av. They had great fun calculating that the power benefit of the EXT over the Av cost $4000 per tenth of a second!

A serious motorcycle nut friend of mine had a saying for the looks before performance crowd . . .

If it don't go, Chrome it!

That's the EXT in my opinion - too gaudy for my tastes. I'll take the functional / practical look of the Av.

i love cadillac the company, but i dont appreciate the way that they take chevrolet models and change the front end! i love the avalanche and always have, the cladding was akward at first but its an integral part of the vehicle that has changed the face of the truck world as well as making the truck a stylish and ultra practical automobile!

I think they both have their places. I love my Av because it is a bad a$$ looking truck, especially after a few mods... >:D
The Ext on the other hand, is more classy & sophisticated, but looks more like a stylish SUV, than a big ole truck. I am a big fan of the EXT painted cladding, and their front bumber/grille set-up. But after my mods, I like my front end better! ;D

BTW - No EXT owners have replied here, and now that I think about it I don't remember ever seeing a post from an EXT owner... ???
Are there any EXT members out there? I'm curious, as to how many active EXT members we have?

Zack,

You'll find this interesting. Yesterday I came out from a restaurant to find an EXT parked next my AV. The EXT had a Mfg tag on it. While I was standing there the guy and his wife came out. He said he works for GM and drives both vehicles.

Both the guy and his wife said they prefer the AV, hands down. Each time that I commented on something nice on the EXT he said the AV options were better and more practical and the styling classier. This from a GM exec.

Who am I to argue with the experts!!! :B:

My contractor friend bought a 2002 Ext aboout 8 months ago because the AV didn't have the options he wanted. He said he would have purchased an AV if the 03 options were available on the 02. In fact, he likes some of the features on my 03 AV better than his ext! BTW, he brushed a fire plug in his ext and payed the price for his painted clading.

My take on this debate. First I traded my 01 LT Suburban in on my 02 AV the deciding factor was practicality.

The Suburban had black paint mid body down, plush carpeted floor and cargo mats, soft supple leather, limited cargo access and no longer offered a tailgate to carry those extra long loads. A Plush Wagon
The EXT is the, Ultimate Plush Wagon
The AV has paint protecting cladding, rugged rubber floor and bed mats, tough rugged leather (with cool bowties) and expanding cargo room with tailgate for those extra long loads. The Ultimate Utility Vehicle

ZACK: Thanks for posting this information. What a FANTASTIC tribute to the venerable Avalanche, not withstanding the fact that the Avalanche is the less expensive of the two vehicles. If ever there was a question as to value for the money, this should settle it forever!!

hey do you live in TX? and if so was the GM execs name Victor by any chance?

Well just stumbled across this thread....... for my $.02 worth I think the Escalade EXT is an ugly over price SUV. :9: :D:
Everything from the windshield forward needs to be rethought. No wonder there is rumor that GM will discontinue them in Lieu of the upcoming GM Denali/Envoy version. Ok I am thru venting now!

My take on the cladding and EXT:

I would have rather had the EXT simply due to the better engine choice. However, I commute usually at least 4 times a week for about a 110mi round trip. The cladding certainly is far superior to the EXT's painted body panels in the ruggedness department. I couldn't see spending the extra 10 grand to get a vehicle that I would feel sorry for every time I saw it's poor, beaten up front end that has been abused by rocks and so on from so much driving.
