Avalanche Prime Target For Theft

N

Northface

GUEST
Alert! Parked my Avalanche in Metro Parking Lot in surburban DC at about 7:30 am returned 6 hours later to find my Av gone - stolen. Police in area indicate that the C1500 Chevy trucks are beginning to be prime targets for theft. That plus the "luxury" aspects of the Av appears to put it near the top of some thieves list. So watch out guys!

And BTW the On-Star system has been of no use whatsoever; took over 30 minutes to get them to take any action at all; they required that I have a case number from the police before they would do anything; luckily the local police reacted quickly and produced one for me and communicated it directly to On-Star. Now over eight hours later - not a word from On-Star.

Police indicated the Av was probably headed to a chop shop and located in a metal building making the On-Star of no use.

That really sucks! I'm so sorry to hear about your Avalanche loss! Sometimes I get worried whenever I park in a strange place but I figure something so big would be noticeable if someone were to steal it.

I'd think OnStar would be effective but it appears not. Have you heard anything about your avalanche yet? I hope you recover it soon. :-[

What about the on board security? The Truck is should have shut off fuel after 20 min.

What about the on board alarm?

Are they no good?

Man, I thought the onstar would be better than that. Maybe your insurance will fork out for the new 2003.

Hey Guys,

Many thanks for the condolences - it does help! O, I did love that truck - a pleasure every time I stepped up into it for a drive.

And Peter, apparently none of the on-board security systems were a deterent. The theft appeared in the middle of the day in what I would have thought to be a quite public place with people going and coming on a reasonably regular basis??? Must have been skilled pros - likely put on a flatbed and hauled it away - if they drove it away the on-board deterents don't deter very much!!!

man, didnt ever think id hear that for a while?!?!?!?

bummer, dude...my condolences :( . hope, they find those b@$tard$ for you!
 :-X  :-X

Which DC suburban parking lot? I just parked mine in the New Carrollton parking lot last week!!

Sorry to hear about your loss-

Jason

Bummer!

I looked over the OnStar info. For our protection they won't do anything until they have a verifiable police case number.

I wonder if OnStar has to wait for the truck to be on in order to track it...or can they turn on the OnStar with the truck being off?

The security doesn't really matter if they bring a flat bed tow truck and haul it away. It would be pretty easy to just bring a truck and a buddy posing as the owner. I know I wouldn't have any questions.

As of 2000, here is the order of preference for cars stolen.

Top Ten Most Stolen Vehicles in the U.S.

1-Toyota Camry
2-Honda Accord
3-Oldsmobile Cutlass
4-Honda Civic
5-Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
6-Chevrolet Full Size C/K pick-up
7-Toyota Corolla
8-Chevrolet Caprice
9-Ford Taurus
10-Ford F150 pick-up

Man that's too bad. I feel for you, I love my Av.

As for OnStar being a theft deterrent - I would think any professional thief would at least just un-screw the antenna. Also true that if the Av isn't running (on a flat bed) there will be no GPS signal.

It is almost impossible to stop a determined pro.

About the best is a LoJack system. Next best is a silent alarm that calls your pager or cell phone.

But for me, I just keep my insurance paid up and have a full replacement clause (in-case I'm upside down loan vs. value). I think that is cheaper and more convenient than an alarm going off when ever someone bumps against my vehicle in a parking lot.

I did use a Truck Club on my Durango anytime I parked in El Paso, TX (very high rate of SUVs that end up across the border).

Hope you either get your AV back in good condition, or your insurance gets you a nice new one. Cheers, Jim.

That really stinks. I hope it either comes back in relatively good condition - or not at all. I had a car stolen and when it was found and I saw it, I wish they hadn't found it (probably not what you want to here).

So surprised they are in demand. I mean being so ugly and all and no one wanting one and why would anyone buy one and all (just kidding).

Keep us posted. BTW, when my car was stolen in 1989 it was done by very determined pros. I said in an earlier post, the thing can blow up if some one as so much as touches it like in a James Bond movie - if they want it, they'll get it. Sounds like someone had a parts order in.

A moment of silence for the fallen Av...

Northface,

I would also like to express my condolances in your loss. :-[ :-[ :-[
I can't say that I know what you are feeling because I never had a vehicle stolen from me as of yet and really don't want to find out. All I know is I would be pissed the f*** off and want to strangle somebody.

It appears now I own two of the most wanted vehicles by car jackers, my Av and my wifes car, a Honda Accord v6. I live in Southern MD and my wife works up in DC and everytime she drives in to work I start getting nervous. After hearing what happen to you she'll NEVER get a chance to drive my truck to DC. Unfortunetely, this type of violation can happen anywhere!!

Once again I am very sorry for your loss. :-[

nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!  what is wrong with people. we can never have anything nice without having to worry about something happening to it. i hope you find the dick heads who stole it and bash their heads in. it just really ticts me off. know i have to go break something................. sorry about your ava northface. A very ticted off Alex

I am so sorry to hear that Northface. ?I trully hope you get a brand new one. ? ??? ??? ???

Big Bummer Fellow Owner.

Hopefully your Insurance Company will make ammends.

When some thief wants it they will take no matter what.

Be glad it was not a car jacking as that is getting rampent as well.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. cant even imagine how it must feel :(

Also the S-10 should be on the list. My dads 92 was almost stolen 3 times. 1st time at the mall came out both doors open. No damage. 2nd time dad came out from bowling alley popped lock steering column broke and a screw driver shoved in. They couldnt start it cause it had a microchip security system (from gm). Truck needs an extra key to be started. 3rd time came out of bowling popped lock steering column busted. THis time the fools tried to hotwire the security system (not electrical an genius). If you mess with these wires truck wont start. They never got it. Left it in anger. Took 3 wks in the shop to be rewired. Oh yea the 3rd time he had the club on and the used a saw and cut the steering wheel in half.

He has since added a metal thing whch is permanantly locked over the steering column (locksmith put on).

That really sucks. People wonder why I put a video surveylance system on my house.

The only security system that I have seen that actually works, is one that my dad had on his cars when I was younger. He would take a model-t coil wrap it around the frame, hook it up to a battery and switch. anything touching the car, would get hit with enough voltage to wet themselves. Unfortunately this nolonger works because of the amount of plastic in cars, and the liability if someone accidently bumps your car.

Even still, if a thief wanted it bad enough, I am sure they could strap on some depends and have a crack at it.

What's left to say - all I can do is add my sympathy to that expressed by other owners.

Makes me wonder about taking my Av into the 'big city' - Denver in my case.

Sure hope this turns out alright for you in the end.

Sorry to hear about your Northface.....I would love to catch those SOB's that did this and hang them from a tree!!
