Finally found a way to get my 8 year old interested in our truck, we made a model (as closely as we could) for his upcoming Pinewood Derby tomorrow. ?Wish us luck, it just may intimidate the competition into submission. ?Wish I would've had more than a couple days to work with it. ?Is this the first ever Pine Wood Avalanche? ?Check out the proud young Avalanche Racer with his AV in the pic.

Thats great, warms my heart to see them start to think of racing at an early age ;D

Great work Dad! (y)

Hope he wins :D

(y)Very cool (y)

Couple years I will be looking forward to that with my son.

Good luck, no matter what happens itll be the the coolest looking truck at the race.

Thanks for the good words, the race starts at 10 am and we'll be leaving soon to get weighed and a wheel alignment before the race begins. Hopefully, the AV will eat up the competition :B:

The AV design proudly carried my son to victory in the Bear Cub division (y) and into the finals where he finished second overall out of all the divisions!!!! The race between my son's AV and the car that took first place had to be ran through two tie breakers to determine the winner. It was very awesome. Since this was our first year ever participating, I think I learned a few things that just may carry us into victory lane next year. And, of course, it'll be another AV. When you find a winner you just have to stick with it! ;D

congrats on your victory, the truck looked great!!!

The other cars must have all been scared to the wheels when they saw a monster coming towards them, they all parted to let him through! >:D

I wish my pinewood derby memories were so fond. I STILL have my car to this day and it is in my office. Well, it really isn't MY car. You see my dad was a VP of a tool & die company that did a lot of work for Ford Motor Company. Well you guessed it - mine was one of those cars that spent time in a wind tunnel, had the wheels balanced, actually had weight MELTED and then poured in smooth on the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

Yes - it smoked the competition and came in first place. My involvement was extremely limited. Wish dad had just let me build a wreck that would have come in the back of the pack.

I'm proud of the car and the work he did, it is a classic work of art open wheel race car done in red - but ugh. :cautious:

GREAT JOB ON THE WIN!!!

I plan on making a pinewood derby TRUCK in the coming weeks of my Av I will keep you all posted . . . there was a DUB Avalanche competition ?. . .wouldn't it be great if we had races at meets ???

For those of us who are not familiar with the pinewood derby, could someone explain how it works. Is it a freewheeling down hill race or what? How does the competition work and is it popular throughout the entire USA?

Skidd 7;)

Hey guys, thanks again for all the words of encouragement and congratulations. Didn't think this post would get much attention, but I liked the idea that we might be able to have pine derby races at meets. Here are some pics of my son's truck at competition time. I did some mods the night before to jazz it up a little and to make sure it weighed as close to 5 oz. as possible. I'll also include some pics of the track so you can get an idea of how the race works. All races between the cars (trucks) were best 2 out of 3 wins in each heat.

BTW- My son, CJ, also said to tell everyone "Thank you" for your support. Here's a pic of the track with my son's truck in the blue lane.

The finish line. Judges were on both sides of the track and would have to have a concensus before a winner was declared, otherwise they picked on of the racers to call a coin flip in the air for choice of lane and then raced them again. I think this kind of thing would be cool to have at a get together. Kits are available, but you have to make the body shape yourself. We used a coping saw, lots of sand paper and graphite powder on the axles. No other lubricant, besides graphite powder is allowed on the axles of pine derby cars.

Great pics!!!!!!!! ;D Congrats to you and your son

Pine derby races at meets sounds cool. Maybe set up an RC obstacle and drag course too. Lots of fun and father son bonding time.
