Hello,

I am wondering if anyone else has heard a quiet high-pitched squeal occasionally while driving? It occurs between 60 - 80 km/h. (35 - 45 mph.) Others riding with me have heard it, so it is not my imagination.

Had my AV three weeks now with no whine.

In fact, many times I drive w/o the radio on because I love hearing nothing - no squeaks or rattles inside and a quiet motor outside.

A true pleasure!!

The squeal I hear is intermittant and occurs at various speeds, however, I have isolated the noise to my 3 1/2 year old in the backseat. She squeals and points every time we see another AV on the road. My wife is somewhat concerned about this kind of vehicular inatuation in a 3 1/2 year old girl. ;D
Other than that, and the throttle body spacer I installed, I haven't heard anything else. I do think it's helpful to post things like this so everyone can keep an eye out for it. (or ear, as the case may be)

I have heard the sound you are describing. I brought my AV to the dealer and they said it was the ring and pinion gears. They are supposed to be swapping them out. I have heard others complaining about the sound and having the gears swapped also with it not helping. We will see.

I had a whine at 50-35 mph while coasting to slow down. Dealer diagnosed ring and pinion gears and swapped out the gears...that quieted things down for about a week and then the noise came back, this time it happens with the gas on at 35 to 60+...same noise...different circumstances. This, combined with a host of other problems, convinced my dealership to push for a dealer assist swap out for another AV...should be here in 2-3 weeks. I also have leaks in the gate but I'm wondering after reading the posts whether I have is closed properly.

Thank you to those who suggested the ring and pinion gears. When I took my truck in for maintenance, I mentioned it to them and they asked if I had anything to go on. I indicated that two others that I knew of with Avalanches had the same problem and that it ended up being ring and pinion gears. I picked up my truck and this was mentioned on the receipt. (All paid for by warranty, of course.):

COMPLAINT: Repair for whining noise at 60-90 klm per hr. front pinion??

CAUSE: Removed front diff - disassemble and inspect find oil discoloured and side and pinion bearing discoloured

CORRECTION: Replaced side carrier and pinion bearing - reassemble and set blacklash

I have not noticed the sound thus far, and it seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks again for those who suggested the ring and pinion gears. It made things much easier! :)

Isn't this website wonderful?

Instead of being alone, we have similarly- interested Av enthusiasts to rap with. Sometimes it is a matter of sharing glorious stories. Other times, it is to help find the cause of a whine.

I am just so proud to be a member. Thanks Chief

Yes, it certainly helps a lot. I am printing off several of the brochures to take to the dealership, as they have asked for information on the club to distribute to new buyers. :)

This is great news! Be sure to bring them a dealer brochure that states the benefits of working with the club (as well as a few owners brochures)

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the kudos guys. But if it wasn't for you - this site wouldn't be great (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!)

I do not believe that I have seen the dealer brochures. I will explore the web page again and see what I can find and take them everything. You never know what may become of it. They are a wonderful dealership and have been very good to me. I don't even mind having their small decal on the back of my truck, because they really deserve the advertisement. (Especially after they knocked the price down so much on my truck.)
