Heard a nooise from the rear brakes on my 02. Checked yesterday and found that the backing plates are rotted and are rubbing inside the rotors.

Has anyone had the same problem and are they hard to change?

What did the noise sound like? Was it a clackity-clack sound? I get a clackity clack souind reflecting off of the Jersey barrier when I take a sharp turn on to a highway on ramp. Traveling in a straight line I don't hear it. Also my breaks pulsate a bit when I break. I had my local dealer technician look at whats causing it and so far he hasn't been able to pin point the cause in both. The technician seems to know what he's talking about - and so tried to go through a set of long drawnout diagnostics to qualify replacement of parts. If there is a recall I'd like to know as soon as possible. I have another appointment to have the breaks diagnosed further in 2.5 weeks. Maybe they'll respond to a push to get this done as well.

Sounds like you have worn out parking brake shoes, just had mine repaired under WARRENTY as left side was worn out and right rear was cracked there seams to be a problem with the return spring.
The BULLETIN NUMBER is 02-05-28-002 it can be printed out from the site do a search under brakes parking i had only 23,649 miles when repaired

No, what happened was the plates behind the shoes (the dust covers) or backing plates were rusted out on the edges causing them to rub against the rotors. My GM Mechanic told me to go ahead and cut out all of the bad and coat them with a rust preventative. To change them you have to pull the axles.

Same old senario, they don't make em like they used to. The metal is more like tin than steel.

A few hours later, and the need for a tetanous shot, my problem is solved.

Before my AV I had an '01 GMC Yukon....same brakes....same problem. The guy at the dealership parts room told me they go through a lot of them.....apparently GM used cheap recycled steel for the backer plates. Bad news....You have to pull the axles to change them.......good news....GM makes a complete rear side kit...( parking brake shoes and eveything assembled) that just bolts right on. All you have to do is hook on the parking brake cable and bolt it on.....once the axle shaft is out of the way....it's a good time to service the fluid anyhow.......not for the faint at heart to try....

yepper......sounds like i`m having the same problem....rusty,rotting `ol backing plates.....it`s a shame that ya spend all that money on a great truck and GM puts cheap plates on..... :E:

Went to due my brakes with less than 30,000 miles, I have never seen anything like this before, all the rotors were gone, dust plates gone, the pads are harder than the rotors as they ate into the rotors, Talk to GMC would do nothing, there were no warnings, this is very dangerous, the back pad on the drivers side was gone contact area on the front was about 1/4 inch. I am ASE certifeid in brakes, this is safty haszard and some one will get killed, My advice check these brakes every 12,000 miles,? pull a tire our crawl underneth but don't trust the emergency brake to hold your Truck in place. $450 dollars all brakes had to be replaced. Never again will I buy a gmc product, bad engineering should be a recall ......  :8: :E: :E: :E:

I just recently had to have the Rotors (all 4) and front Brakes replaced on my 02 Av and when they started working on it they noticed that the Backing Plates were rusted out and needed to be replaced. I asked them how it was possible for these to be rusted out already, I only have 30,000+ miles on the truck and the service tech explained it is due to the SALT and other Corrosive items that are put down on the roads for snow and ice removal in the winter months. He contacted GM and they told him that would cover the labor, and parts for that part of the job. Which is about $500 just in parts and aprox. 5 hours worth of labor. So I would recomend for everyone to keep an eye on these and if you can get GM to foot the bill for the replacement. Good luck and happy driving.
