Hi all,

Who makes the best quality backup camera?  Or are they all about the same quality?  I'd like to get one I can put into the tailgate handle bezel, but I'm not sure if I should try and get a factory cam or an aftermarket cam.  Thanks,

Virgil

I went with the Cubbycam and mounted the camera in the tailgate handle bezel.? I don't have any experience with the other backup camera systems for a comparison, but I have been completely happy with the CubbyCam system.? It gives an excellent picture day or night.? The monitor is mounted in an angle toward the driver and the mounting looks factory.? There may be systems that are priced for less, but I am glad I got the Cubbycam and feel that it is well worth the price.? It was shipped quickly and I installed it myself with the help of the very detailed instructions.? The guy who developed and sells the system is an Avalanche guy is is very responsive to questions.

From what I have read the camera mounted in the tailgate bezel gives you a better angle to judged distances when backing up.
The camera mounted in the receiver Gives you a better view of what is behind you. (I have the Nav-Cam in the receiver)

I get good image night or day. easy install (few hrs taking time w/few Beers)

Monitor or camera is fussy warming up on days below 30 deg F

I have NAV but no back-up camera. Is there a kit that I can buy that can be installed that will display through my factory NAV?

I also vote for the Cubby Cam. Now what you didn't say is what year you have. You mentioned not knowing if you wanted to go with a factory or aftermarket. This leads me to believe that you don't have your AV yet and are shopping or ordering one. The 02-06 had no factory backup cam. As far as I know the Cubby cam only works on these models if you are giong with the cubby mount location. This is because the dash was changed in 07. When I got mine 1.5 years ago there was no Cubby cam for the 02 as there are interior changes between the 02 and the 03. It only worked on the 03+. I think Ed has been working on ones for the 02 but I don't know what he has yet.

So if you are talking a 07+ (they are only taking orders for 08s now) then I would say factory as that is about the only option I can think of unless JPCustoms has a aux video input adapter for the 07 NAV system

If you are talking about a 03-06 and maybe an 02 then Cubby Cam all the way.

Also the other statement about the bezel display is correct. It is much easier to judge distance with the bezel mount. While more of a PITA to install the pay off is worth it. While you are at it install a power door lock actuator in the tailgate. I love mine.

Thanks for the replies Bamabucket and Sennister.

The CUBBYCAM works with 1999 to 2006 (and some 2007 classic models). (I knoiw the website isn't updated yet.) Working on a new ecommerce site which will be up soon.

I'm working on an 07 solution, but since the 07s dont have a cubby, not much I can do. Lemme know if you have any questions.

Sorry again for reviving an old thread, but my '04 is new to me, and I'm trying to figure out what all my options are. I know availability on some items may have changed in the last few years. Any recommendations for a a good double-din touchscreen nav tuner that has built-in Bluetooth, nav & SXM capability? Also, know of any units that would have an input for a backup camera? Thanks in advance.

You should talk to customer service at www.crutchfield.com they can fix you up with a system to include head unit, camera and all wiring harnesses needed based on your AV. If you want a big screen in a small space you could even consider a flip out screen head model.
