Does anyone have a remote start alarm (with remote display such as the DEI, Viper or Clifford) that WILL NOT disable the perimeter lighting or any of the factory features that our beloved AVs come with? I really really REALLY want to keep those minor features.

If not, what is the best remote start alarm that allows the best functionality of our trucks?

I recently installed a GM Approved unit, Command Start, which is similar to the Audiovox. You may have seen my thread where I posted the fact the perimeter lighting went away as this Remote Start was installed :6:

I have a 'trouble report' with my dealer on this, and have been assured that when programming is available to recover those features, mine will be 'repaired' under warranty. :)

that doesnt sound right about the perimeter lighting going away. when you unlock the truck it should activate the factory alarm if done right. who installed it, and it a well respected shop?

I put on the Viper 791 VX remote start alarm and love it... It has been on for as long as i have had the truck (2 1/2 months). I put it on the day after i got the truck. Alarm and sounds are important to me. They were put on before insurence. HeHeHe. ;D

I love the fact that i can start it up and get it going and be in and out w/o having to wait for it to warm up. My girlfriend loves when we go to the movies and come out, she turns it on from inside the theatre, so when we get to the truck it is nice and warm.

I have put the 1 mile radius to the test. It is pretty good. I have been inside the theatre, inside the mall, on the other side of the shopping market and it turns on. The cool thing is that the beeper lets you know that the truck has started. So you know right away if it worked.

I highly reccomend.

I too have the viper with remote start and Fuel and starter cutt off. I also haev a DEI pager. works great I can be inside a store and if something or someone hits the truck I know and RUN outside to check it out.

Remote start is great in the cold weather I start it from inside my house and the heater warms it up very nicely. in the summer here in El Paso it gets hot fast. I can start the truck and in no time the AC has the truck cold and ready.I just start it from inside the office and walk out to a nice truck.

spend the cash and get it..

Pete

I've got the Audiovox Prestige APS996a and LOVE it so far... small remote, and the pager has great range! The installer never hooked up my perimeter lighting when he was under the dash, but one quick connect and 5 minutes and that was taken care of! ;D. Everything acts like it did factory, including the sequencial door locks. Like everyone else, I love the fact that you can start the truck and let it warm up, and the alarm stays on with the doors locked! The alarm also turns the truck off if power is applied to the brakes, or if it detects the idle go over 1200 rmp, pretty much immobilizing the truck from being driven off without your key. Also, the remote will confirm a succesful remote start and keep the truck running for a predetermined mount of time. You can even set it to automatically start and run for a few minutes if the outside tempurature drops below a certain point. Frankly, that feature would freak me out, and I don't use it :p You can also check the temperature inside the truck from your remote

Initially, my only complaint about the alarm was the extremely low volume of the remote. This was solved by accidently dropping the remote on a concrete sidewalk :E: Since then, I've been able to hear it over the diesel engine of the backhoe at work

I've also heard very good things about the DEI lineup of products. Most of the features are the same from brand to brand. AudioVox and Matrix both have plenty of Aux channels available for feature upgrades too! Just remember, the alarm is only as good as the installer! :)

I have every expectation the perimeter lighting will be enabled once the tech figures it out. The installer is a "GM Approved" local firm, who does many of the electronic hookups for my local dealer.

Most recently I've noticed my shock sensors to be overly sensitive. I suppose some minor tweaking should resolve this.

any shift in shock sensor placement could have caused the sensitivity to adjust. a quick tweek and youll be good as new. The avalanche is fairly simple with the dei modual so i imagine that the lighting should be a fairly simple hookup.

That was a good one! I guess it's the alarm. ;D >:D ;D

But... if they really want the AV that much, they'll take it either way. I've got the club and the factory alarm on it. I normally park her right next to my office window and bedroom.

Funny story: in the early 90's a good friend of mine bought the first Dodge Stealth and modded the hell out of the stereo, rims, windows, the whole shabang. TWO alarms and the club installed on his car. He parked right outside his house one night. When he walked outside in the morning, the car was gone, nothing left but tire tracks. These guys "drugg" (southern for dragged) his car onto a flatbed and hauled it away, never to be seen again. All that mod money out the window. He lived in Newark.

Dis is makin me sic !! :D:

I just had my pickup truck stolen last month.. me thinks they drugg mine too !!

What about a physical restraint.. something like the Denver Boot... ?

Regards,
CK

Try the DEI 554R...I love mine. Its the same alarm with a smaller remote (better in my opinion) and a slight cut back on range, and its cheaper. There is ALWAYS a way to make something work. With a few relays here and there, you could make your truck do the limbo!

i cant decide on which remote start will suit me what is the range of the system as afr as turning on my car??

I was looking at the Viper 160XV and was curious if anyone had it. I also was wondering what other "junk" had to be purchase to get it to function properly. Circuit City has it for $89 but I was wondering what the added costs were.

Nobody on this post has a DEFINITE answer to Omega's question. I'm not shelling out 600 bones for a Viper 791XV (with the extra bells and whistles) or a Clifford or Valet if the people at the car audio place can't answer this question or anyone on this forum can. It seems like everyone has the same answer----"It should work!". Well, I know it should, but does it???? Like Omega, I'm not gonna give up the puddle lamps or interior lights when unlocking the vehicle. If anyone has a DEFINITE "YES" answer to this question, please let me know! Thanks guys! --------Robb

Rob,
I knowit for a fact that it works. I have a radio shop and we have installed many viper alarms and they dont bother the interior/exterior lighting at all.

I believe it the Viper 160vx correct me if I am wrong. What else do I need to get it to function properly?

OK...for a FACT...the Clifford 3.5 Matrix when properly installed maintains ALL factory functions including Perimeter lighting...AND...allows the continued operation of the factory alarm at the same time...AND...does so with only having to use the "responder" remote for BOTH...AND...you can have the factory alarm "feedback" when setting the alarm as well as the systems own "feedback" when setting the alarm...

Thanks VB & IChange. That's good to hear. I'm actually going to go with the latest VALET starter/alarm system. It's by DEI, so it's pretty much the same as the XV and the 3.5, with the exception of another remote (2 included), and different LCD. The LCD actually has a clock on it and will display the vehicle's interior temperature. It's not on DEI's site yet. VB, IChange: do you know what one I'm talking about? I think it is model 564 or something like that. One last question. I'm sure this is possible, but can you unlock just the driver door, then hit unlock again to open the remaining doors, just like the factory remote? I believe you can. Is another "module" or "extra" needed to do this? Thanks for your help guys! I'll probably take these responses into the car audio place tomorrow. Thanks again. -----Robb

Robbski,
The 3.5 works exactly like that on the doors...no extra module needed...as you probably know DEI "makes" the 3.5 so while I don't know the specific answer to the one you are looking at...It also is DEI...so there is a strong probability...
